This movie is so close to my heart. Somehow the entire MCU feels like a weird personal timeline of my life. I have watched every single mcu movie in theatres since the first Thor movie. I was doing my high school back then and I would usually go and watch them with my best friends on the first day of the release.. They were pretty much the only group of guys ide hang out with and I’ve actually known them since I was 7.. Over the years we graduated, found our jobs and got settled with life. slowly as adult life started to kick in, priorities changed and my friends started to rift away one by one. Sadly we are pretty much strangers now and around the release of Guardians 2, I had to start watching these movies all alone. When the avengers went back in time somehow I felt I went back with them, looking at my younger self, enjoying the same movie in the same theatre with my friends, cherishing those moments with no idea whats about to hit. I teared up hard when Thor’s mom asked “the future has not been too good to you has it?” Moral of this story: always cherish and enjoy the time you have because life will hit you hard. Always be grateful to the friends you have in your life. You don’t know when they will walk away.

Mohd Farhan - so true for me too. I accept that sometimes you drift apart from people, but it doesn’t have to be a bad thing. The one thing I’ll always remember from those friendships are the good times. Don’t forget though, to enjoy the good times you’re having right now, too.

Exactly! I love how their arcs invert. Selflessness and self-interest - you need a balance of both. None alone is healthy. Tony was the guy who's arc dealt with him looking beyond himself - "to the greater good". Steve was the guy who stands up for everyone but he needed to realise that it's okay to stand up for yourself too. Self-actualistaion doesn't make you any less worthy.

Toxic fans don’t seem to understand that character evolution means characters change. They revile all change as ‘destroying characters’. They are wrong. Characters are destroyed once the audience realizes that due to plot armor nothing can really happen to the character. Jon Snow in game of Thrones, SuperMan and Batman in DCU.... these characters were destroyed because nothing has happened to them. Therefore there is no longer any interest in them. Even the actors *quit* because there is nothing for them to do.

    • @3Rayfire
      @3Rayfire 4 года назад +13

Also, both characters do what the other told them they couldn't do and should do. Steve said Tony couldn't make the sacrifice play, Tony makes the sacrifice play, Tony told Steve everything that was special about him came from a bottle, he's worthy; and Tony told him to try a normal life, and Steve tried a normal life.

@@katherinealvarez9216 It's an okay film to watch with others in the theater and it is entertaining because so much is happening that you have barely time to catch your breath - but narrative wise it is a complete mess. The film went through so many rewrites and recuts, the finale, according to some rumours, have been rewriten and recorded over the summer and reshot in September or so. It is very plausable that they actually did decide to just copy Endgame to save themselves some time in the end.

I cried through most of the movie every time I've watched it, but I think the bit that still hits the hardest is seeing "Proof that Tony Stark has a heart" floating in the water. It started with Iron Man 1, and it was the most tragically fitting that it end with Tony's ultimate sacrifice, and ultimate redemption for all the times he'd been selfish and decidedly non-heroic.

Great point on time travelling. A lot of people just see 'time travel' and then switch off. Others expect to see something unique.
I think the point wasn't a cop-out to undo Thanos' actions in Infinity War; the point was to make a journey throughout the MCU. It really was a game that was played to the end

Im very thankful for creating this wonderful narrative. This journey of mine watching these movies since I was still a kid and growing up and watch it all end is really hitting the heart strings inside of me. A year of waiting Avengers: Endgame to come, I could stil remember being so hyped about it. The thoughts of Iron Man/Tony Stark dying isn't really digging me in as I thought they wouldn't let that character sign off. But as soon as I get to watch Endgame with my girlfriend, the final scene where Iron Man finally did snapped his fingers, all I felt was just pure joy and excitement as they've finally won the battle. But not realizing the outcome of it. There it goes, my childhood hero, slowly saying goodbye to me. I bursted out of tears and I couldn't help myself from crying so much. Watching this video brings that all back. When you talked about how Tony met his father , I started tearing up and it keeps coming until the last minute of your video. Thankyou for this! As a Marvel Fan, this is amazing.

"I don't really know how to open this video" - and Johnathan never did.
Truly one of RUclips's greatest mysteries, so I'll take a stab at what he may have wanted to say in his video essay. "Marvel is good, me like the films, me think they do the action and smiles and sads really well and good, me think metal fly fast man have the good heart and do ending well"
I might be paraphrasing Johnathan's inner thoughts a little, but I'm confident that's what he may have gone for.
In all seriousness, this was an amazing video essay and Johnathan has done a tremendous job at highlighting the complexity behind it's structure and given a truly fun and nuanced look into one hell of a finale. Great work. xx

Avengers infinity war and Endgame were not movie showings, they were once in a lifetime experiences. Like seeing your very first movie in a movie theater, beating your first dark souls game, and other such memorable experiences in life. I have seen many movies at my movie theater and only Avengers Infinity war and Endgame EVER got the kinds of emotional reactions I saw when I went to these movies. They were emotional rollercoasters were people laughed, cheered, and cried. At most the only ever reaction I saw during a movie at the movie theater was laughing during a comedy movie. I have been following this MCU since the beginning of the MCU when I was 10 yrs old, and I feel lucky to be alive for this entire MCU journey we are all on.
I love you Marvel and RDJ x3000, experiencing these movies when they first release and come out has been an amazing experience.

One of the more important aspects of Endgame's story construction is that the time travel plot device isn't used in a typical manner. The story establishes right up front that going back to visit your past and work through it, cannot change your present. (The metaphor isn't hard to see.) While time travel allows those killed by the snap to return, it is crucial that the five year period of tribulation isn't undone. Thanks to that, those who are returned are granted the framework of being rescued, rather than being reset. The weight of their deaths is preserved.

Put very simply (at least about this amazing essay's final point), what Tony gains is: 1. Closure with his abandonment issues with his father, and 2. A sense of HOPE. He has not had a sense of hope whatsoever, not since his parents were killed.
I can't believe I'm just finding this essay. It's wonderful. Avengers Endgame has various plot flaws. But I wholeheartedly agree that it's EMOTIONAL punch is why it's such a satisfying and successful finale.
