Interestingly, the age of the Anglo-Saxons ended at hastings shortly after this battle. The normans brought bow and arrows and men mounted on horses which the Anglo-Saxons didn't have. The resulting french spoken rule moves us closer to the English we speak today. That and the west side eof france, through marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine, not long after. Yes,Vikings and Saxons usually used brute strength to win battles. The normans used battle tactics. And Horse warefare was something the Saxons or vikings rarley used. Which explains why the normans won.

It’s actually a huge military blunder for the Vikings. They were relaxing essentially on campaign with no picket/scouts. Most were hung over and many were bathing. A large portion of the men were nearby on ships likely drunk… The army was split on each side of the river. If that was not bad enough they saw the army approaching but due to the glint of the sun they assumed it was another Viking army since one was near. They didn’t think Englishmen were even remotely close…When they realized it was not it was almost too late to properly dress in time to be battle ready. The one bezerker on the bridge is either an embellishment or a minor event during the slaughter that happened that day.
It's ironic. They suffered a lightning attack out of nowhere, completely unsuspecting of it until they were swarmed by angry Saxons. Usually, this was the case whenever they carried out their own attacks.
And, it was so hot that the Vikings didnt have their armor and some of their arms. The Saxons were properly armed. So, the Vikings got the 6 feet of good English earth promised by Harold Godwinson. Harald Hardrada’s banner was a black raven on a blood red background, called Landwaster. Harald’s army arrived in 200 ships, possibly with 60-80 men per ahip. After the battle, it took only 20 ships to take the surviving Norwegians homs
The bridge probably was not that wide, or the Saxons could have overwhelmed the warrior more easily. As it was, they sent aboat under the bridge and he was speared from below
It is ironic that both kings, Harald Hardrada, and Harold Godwinson, were both killed by arrows. Harald, through the windpipe, Harold through the eye. By the way, Edward the Confessor was not a strong Saxon king

@@pendragonU Only if you swallow the propaganda of the victors (Normans). Harold was elected king by the Witanegemot, a perfectly legal Saxon way of doing so. The Wessex line was represented by the young boy, Edgar Atheling, not old enough to lead the nation against the Normans, although he fought against William after Hastings and Harold's death, notably by holding London Bridge against the Normans, forcing them to circumnavigate the capital. And swearing on holy relics under duress, as Harold was, didn't count as valid in those times. Harold Godwinson and his Huscarls almost certainly rode horses to Stamford Bridge and dismounted for the battle as was the custom. The Normans had learned from continental warfare cavalry tactics which gave them the advantage at Hastings.
A few points to make, not to be nitpicky. The battle itself was most likely not at the bridge itself, while the stand made by the "lone" viking at the bridge is probably somewhat true. There was an agreement for a meetup at the bridge to exchange hostages after the previous battle that saw the Vikings conquer York. Harald Hardrada likely figured that Harold Godwinson would not be able to raise a significant army and march it north. This is why the Vikings were quite famously unarmored for the engagement at Stamford. Harold likely had mounted troops and probably pushed his forces across the bridge or another area that was passable and defeated the Vikings in more open terrain.

he should have had scouts while his men were on standby he paid the price for that wrong move usually in war knowing what your enemy is doing is critical
The saxon ffyrd also used long handled axes, And it was reported that they could "cleve" a man in two. To do a forced March north, at speed, fight a bloody battle, then, do a forced March south, at speed, to fight again within just a few days is testament to the saxons will to remain saxon. It was a calculated gamble, that so very nearly paid off, the Norman's at semlac hill Panicked and fled, the saxons poured down the hill from their positions, but we're cut down by Norman cavalry. Seeing this William ordered several similar attacks, and each time the saxons fell for it. At Stamford bridge a lucky arrow caused the vikings to crumble, At Hastings, a lucky arrow caused the saxons to crumble. You have to admire the stamina and fighting spirit of the Saxon army. March 290 km and then annihilate a Viking army. The Vikings came on 300 boats and went home on 24, never more to return to our shore.
The Viking era ended? The Normans were Vikings who settled in France. So hardly the end of the Viking influence on England. It was one set of Vikings being replaced by another.
I'm surprised the Saxon archers didn't just nail the giant Norseman blocking the bridge. instead of letting him kill a reported 40 Saxons with his axe...
If this was a game I'd pay £50 for it! Creative Assembly have dropped the ball immensely with the Total War series. I was disppointed when I realized these were fixed animations, but still amazing.

I think Godwinson has been underrated a bit by history. This battle was a true achievement in leadership and courage. Then to turn around and meet a new threat head-on at Hastings with barely a pause. He tried hard and nearly succeeded. If he’d won at Hastings, I feel he would have been feted as one of history’s great commanders.
i always wondered what would happen if vikings tried to form their shieldwall as close to the bridge as possible, not allowing Godwinson army to spread
Excellent spectacle. The sheer exhausting physical exertion of medieval shield wall battle must have been unimaginable for us. I think at this period though I'd call the home side the English rather than the Anglo Saxons, Harold the English king not the Saxon king etc. That's no criticism though, this is a great film.
You are right about that indeed. Calling him an English King is quite appropriate but I thought of focusing on the Saxon aspect due to Harold being the last Anglo-Saxon king. Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback!
I believe the Norse accounts of 'Anglo Saxon' cavalry(Norman knights brought to England by Edward previously) more than modern historians that discount it based on nothing or trying to claim the reports of Stamford Bridge got confused with the Battle Hastings. How the few norse that did make it back knew anything about the battle of hastings I have never heard them satisfactorily explain.

@@historybattles3D Well London has a sign over it and one can see the individual trees on the island, they must be about 40 km tall. Very interesting video btw thumbs up.
imagine you swing the large battle axe like the one at 0:20 in middle...in a close formation...
excellent
Many many thanks
Ojalá algún día pongas comentarios en español para una mejor experiencia pero en sí tienes un buen canal con buenos vídeos😉
What is the game called
William owes his entire success to Hadrada
actaully crazy....kinda looks like a really good RTS xD
Please can you do a historical doc on the Roundhead troops in Europe.
I'm surprised the Saxon archers didn't just nail the giant Norseman blocking the bridge. instead of letting him kill a reported 40 Saxons with his axe...
What game you used?
Cool video.
Thanks!

If this was a game I'd pay £50 for it! Creative Assembly have dropped the ball immensely with the Total War series. I was disppointed when I realized these were fixed animations, but still amazing.
Thank you very much!
Well, unfortunately it's just animation.
Even though I do my best to optimize, it wouldn't be playable! haha
They actually did a decent job of portraying this in the series "Vikings".
That serie is a joke
@@niklassvensson860 more like a feminist SOAP, a drag on the rag of the Lagerta's.
Men, Norse men, acting like insecure women and even crying. Women fighting in armors like girls and leading men in reverse gender roles. LGBTQ dramas and betrays for straight. Not even equality but a modernist utopian vision catapulted into pagans' brutal days, where women are given more than a fair chance but handouts
this looks like a phone game ad
I just realized that the Saxon had the trifecta" Viking blood Celtic blood and Roman tactics " ... A concoring machine.
what game is this
I think Godwinson has been underrated a bit by history. This battle was a true achievement in leadership and courage. Then to turn around and meet a new threat head-on at Hastings with barely a pause. He tried hard and nearly succeeded. If he’d won at Hastings, I feel he would have been feted as one of history’s great commanders.
What game
Is that sir knoble knight in the thumbnail?
i always wondered what would happen if vikings tried to form their shieldwall as close to the bridge as possible, not allowing Godwinson army to spread
you forgot the thanns that he had with him my family were there ..back in the day saxon losses were around 3000 men
Excellent spectacle.
Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback!
what a great battle!
Why isn't there games like this
I believe the Norse accounts of 'Anglo Saxon' cavalry(Norman knights brought to England by Edward previously) more than modern historians that discount it based on nothing or trying to claim the reports of Stamford Bridge got confused with the Battle Hastings. How the few norse that did make it back knew anything about the battle of hastings I have never heard them satisfactorily explain.
Awesome . My ancestors were awarded lands in Yorkshire after the next battle from William . Poor old Godwinson , talk about bad luck and timing .
