It never really had to be said to be honest. Zoro was first mate and obviously the strongest behind Luffy. Zoro feels like protagonist 1B at times with Luffy being 1A.

Then Luffy directs his order to Zoro, who, without a doubt just does it, even others would still disagree, but they cannot do anything else but to go with Zoro. This happens at least when Luffy fights with Crocodile in the desert and Luffy orders others to get Vivi to her hometown.
I actually prefer the way it is done in the manga/anime instead of the live action. Everyone knew that Zoro ist the first mate but not because it ever was said - because it didn’t need to. Latest after Water 7 everyone in the crew had fully accepted Zoro’s role as first mate with the authority to put people in the crew in their place. And that is so much more powerful. But Zoro doesn’t have a general authority which would normally be expected of a second in command. The strawhats each have a field of expertise and that is where each has authority. Zoro would never try to tell Nami how to navigate and Sanji would never let anyone else tell him how to cook for the crew. 99% of the time Zoro even gets scolded by Chopper when he’s not being g careful with his wounds and injuries. The only time he doesn’t is when it’s crucial to get through a battle and keep the crew alive - which is Zoro‘s field of expertise, you could say. And that’s why there was never a need to point out Zoro as first mate, because they each naturally assumed a role in the crew where others need to listen to them.

So becass in the sub only sanji knew but in the dub sanji and brook both know and oda confermed both the sub and dub to be right implying the one pice series in the japness sub and English dub are different but the same without meaning to oda made the one peice multi vurse the universe where only sanji knew what zoro did and the other being both sanji and brook know what zoro did😂 so oda made 2 secret univirses due to stated both the English dub and original were both true dispite them being different
