BlizzCon 2010 - World of Warcraft Cataclysm - Rejected Portal Login Screen

  • In Blizzcon 2010, the Blizzard employees introduced for the first time to the audience,the concept artwork they did for the Log-In screen of the Cataclysm Expansion.
    They had some interesting ideas,like the Maelstrom log-in screen,and they ended up to make the Twillight's Hammer Portal log-ing screen.
    But then they decided that the theme of the screen would be too vague for the non-85L players,so they scrapped it and they eventually sticked to the Deathwing Log-in Screen which you can see it in RUclips here:
    • Blizzcon 2010 Cataclys...
    Personally,although i find the initial Portal log-in pretty cool and with a node to the classic The Burning Crusade Portal log-in screen,i have to agree with the decision of the Blizzard artists to replace it with something more familiar,since a lot of wow gamers wouldnt know what the Portal was about until they reached level 85.

    Although I like that Twilight's Hammer login screen, I get why they decided not to go for it, because really if you're new to the game, you would have no idea what that is. On the flip side, if you're new to the game and you see the giant flaming dragon that was on the box art and the game trailer, you already have an idea about what that is, it's the important guy in the expansion.

    • @AlexHerlicska
      @AlexHerlicska 2 года назад +1

      well i would agree with you but if i remember right, they also revamped the old questing area and they made twilight hammer a lot more present in the leveling experience, heck you fight against twilight hammer at level 3? in human area. it's a silly to say it's to complicated for the new players imo.

    • @silverhowl9331
      @silverhowl9331 Год назад +1

      @@AlexHerlicska Still, its understandable why they would switch to Deathwing, he caused it all, the madness, and the Twilight Hammer is perhaps supposed to be a mystery to those that play, who are they? What role do they have to play in all this? The game gives you answers once you progress into the max level zones, and thats when it starts to add all up. Still, loved Deathwing's login screen, just a fuckin badass.

    *facepalm* so we put a dopey looking version of deathwing on top of the gates of stormwind.
    Who gives two fucks if someone doesn't "get" the log-in screen, you don't have to get it.
    When I started WoW in 2005 I had no clue what the Dark Portal was, and when I found it after months of playing I was like: "OH! That's where the log-in screen comes from!" It was a sense of discovery, but god forbid players actually explore and discover things.
    It was like their mission in Cataclysm was to destroy immersion and exploration, because that's exactly what it did for me. Especially in the end-game content.

    Nobody would understand who the Twilight Hammer was? How would new players understand what the Dark Portal was? Or Icecrown Citadel? That's what makes it more mysterious and makes you want to get to high lvl and learn about the world and story. What is this mysterious portal in the login screen? What is this black castle in a frozen wasteland? It made you want to know more and explore. In Cata, it's just "Oh, that big dragon from the box cover attacked this random city".

      They made the right choice. Deathwing standing on top of the entrance to Stormwind was a very memorable visual, especially as someone who joined during Cataclysm. I had seen the WotLK login screen, so my expectations, I guess, were subconsciously a bit high. In many ways, I feel like it's one of their best login screens. I would choose to go back to it if I could, but... well... for absolutely no good reason that's not an option. They put in all that work into these screens and you can't even swap between them anymore. They're just gone. Forever.

    • @Altermerea
      @Altermerea 3 года назад +5

      Yeah, that feels like a such a weird excuse. Did anybody new knew what the Dark Portal was during Vanilla? A doodad feature from Blasted Lands, a high level 55+ zone surrounded by elite demons with zero reasons to visit other than saying "look, this is the loading screen portal".
      Dark Portal in TBC was also a high level 58 area in Hellfire Peninsula, did it stop them? Frostwyrm and Northrend were a high-level thing too.
      If anything, the Twilight's Hammers were actually the most relevant idea ever to put into loading screen, if we are making such standard, because the entire Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms questing content was revamped and a lot of redesigned zones actually featured Twilight's Hammers really, really early - some as early as Loch Modan and Darkshore. Twilight's Hammers were both low and high level feature, thus it makes the excuse really, really odd and weaselly. I think they just really wanted Deathwing on screen and had zero reasoning for doing so, other than "it looks cool", so they've post-talk justified it ad hoc.

    • @AntonioPerez1990
      @AntonioPerez1990 3 года назад +3

      @@Altermerea I don't think the Twilight Portal has much relevance, but the previous 3 loading screen did. They are all tied to marketing; Vanilla: Your adventure awaits, TBC: journey to Outland, WotLK: Fight Arthas in Icecrown (The dragon from the cinematic is there). Then Cataclysm was Deathwing, the dragon who caused the cataclysm across Azeroth, the whole reason for the expansion - and this time the threat is coming back to your home instead. The twilight hammer wasn't present in the cinematics or trailiers and they aren't even the big bad. The players don't really know what the portal is and where it leads to either. So I think the change was the right choice.

    Honestly if people don't know the lore behind something then they need to put in effort into learning it - a little reading won't hurt anyone. Plus, the people who don't care about lore won't care about the aesthetics of the login screen.

    • @xavierwastaken6891
      @xavierwastaken6891 7 лет назад +5

      You missed the point entirely, and that doesn't even make sense. First you're essentially telling people to go fuck themselves and go read some if they don't know the lore. Not everybody is a lore buff, some people play the game because it's fun, you know? Also, people who don't care about the lore won't care about the login screen? What? The login screen is literally the first impression you get of the game, you're essentially saying that blizzard could put anything in the login screen and only the lore buffs would care about it? It has to do with aesthetics and world building, and everyone who plays the game is impacted by that.
      With this i'm not saying that blizzard shouldn't put more obscure stuff in the login screen, personally I think the Twilight's Hammer portal as the login screen would look much better than the one we got with Deathwing.
      It's like +MarkS said "When I started WoW in 2005 I had no clue what the Dark Portal was, and when I found it after months of playing I was like: "OH! That's where the log-in screen comes from!" It was a sense of discovery, but god forbid players actually explore and discover things."
      Even if you don't read all the lore bits, you can figure most stuff out in-game by just playing the game. And putting something that looks really cool but you don't know exactly what it is in the login screen would just make people want to play it more, because they want to know what it is.

      Yeah, but thats deepholm so it makes sense. I don't think that login screen had any connection to how Shadowlands looks, but I can see how you would think that.

    • @Saiku

      @@thisguyhd6591 That concept screen has nothing to do with shadowlands, that's Deepholm. They weren't actually thinking that far ahead lmao.

    @XGam3rproX No you haven't. The screaming dragon was introduced in WotLK, which was certainly not four years before Cataclysm's launch. You could pretend all you want that the stone dragon's head and claws atop the Dark Portal were screaming at you, but it certainly wasn't.
    And besides, polls show that the TBC log-in screen is the fan favourite.

    This one looks 1000's times better than Deathwing. Only thing I find symbolizing ANY doorway or portal is the gates of SW, and that's not much. Blizz should make it so you can actually choose your login screen.

    they were extensively present in Silithus pre-cata. Also in the night elf lands trying to dig up that old god general. In wotlk there was that instance with the old god servant as the final boss. (most people just thought those guys were Arthas Cultists unfortunately(the humanoids, not the servants))
    most people just skipped past their identity since few people bother with the lore in game. Which makes it even worse when they bitch theres no lore or build up when its been extensive

    The maelstrom or portal were perfect! Everyone knows what the hell twilight's hammer is. The lowest level I saw them at (and I'm sure you see them even sooner) was in Thousand Needles, they're doing their bad, end of the world stuff and opening up portals to kill and blow everything up. The guy in the video doesn't even know what he's talking about..."high level content," RLY?

    Other than entering the vale after the celestial quest with Anduin and seeing them loom closer as you bridge the distance to the Golden Lotus pagoda? They're thematic and a reminder of the past.and a symbol of the vale and pandaria. A reminder to never be subjugated by the Mogu or whoever fills their role. They don't have to be anything more than just be there.

    I agree. I really didnt know who the twilights hammer was and i started playing i vanilla. The twilights hammer and all their crazy villians were so entertaining and really made cata enjoyable for me. More so than deathwing for sure. Deathwing was mad, but the real evil was the twilights hammer and they knew they were and loved it.

    God these were some of the last few years Blizzard showed true passion about their game and it shows, it actually hurts to watch. Shame we never got the Maelstrom portal login, you learn about the Twilight Hammer once you reach Twilight Highlands at the latest. Honestly, I think that concept woulda been really cool. Music is awesome too.

    "We felt that nobody would understand who the Twilight Hammer was."
    ... it's the LOGIN SCREEN, for goodness' sake. All that matters is making it look good. They shouldn't have worried about "new players getting confused about the antagonist of Cataclysm" because actually PLAYING the game does a good job of explaining all the story-related stuff to you. Hell, the entrance to Deepholm in the Maelstrom would've made a far better login screen while continuing the portal theme.

    Anyone who has played WarCraft II knows what the Twilight's Hammer is.
    Bu then again, many WoW players haven't played the previous WarCraft games and don't know much of the lore...
