  • This video is a DIY tutorial on how to build a garden teepee trellis for vertical gardening for under $40! This easy and cheap DIY trellis makes gardening fun and can be built in about 30 minutes. It's so simple!
    I've always wanted to be able to walk underneath an arched trellis in my garden and pick fruits and vegetables hanging from plant vines over my head. It seems like an image out of a storybook. You can do that, dirt cheap and simple, with your own vertical gardening teepee trellis!
    You can build this teepee for about the cost of one single piece of cattle panel, making it a tiny fraction of the cost of a cattle panel trellis sometimes used as a vertical garden arched trellis.

    That’s a very nice set up.
    I do the same thing, however, I use copse wood instead of EMT conduit.
    I then employ scrounged electrical wire instead of twine to bind it.
    I don’t get the dimensional effect you have, but the function is the same.
    I am a great scavenger, and I’m always looking for things that allow me to garden at no cost.
    A nice trick is to use plastic to cover the teepees in winter, turning them into a cold frame.
    I do like the rebar as a foundation point, and may bind the wood uprights to some in the future.
    Thanks
    David

      @TheMillennialGardener  2 года назад +2

      Thanks! This teepee, literally, only takes up a 4'x4' square. It has almost no footprint. This is great, because you can jam it in the smallest corner you can find as long as it gets full sun, and because you use grow bags, you don't even need room for a raised bed. I think this is a major space-saver.

    Do peas survive the winter where you are? You may be able to grow some peas on that trellis before spring.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  2 года назад

      I grow mostly snap peas, and they can only take a light frost. Anything into the 20’s and they get damaged. There may be hardier varieties out there, but I prefer snap peas and they can’t take the winters here. Kale, broccoli, chard, some lettuces, spinach, carrots, beets, cabbage and many other things can, though.

    I was just going to ask how far the rebar were embedded. I knew you would let us know. MATH!!! 🥰 super cool. Love making teepees. We have a huge bamboo one in the yard right now for playing in. It’s like 15 feet high.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  2 года назад +3

      I try to be as thorough as possible without dragging these videos out *too* long. I would love to get bamboo, but I can't find any that is 10 feet (6-8 feet is too short), and the cost for bamboo poles is ridiculous, considering it's just an invasive weed when you get right down to it. I've considered growing my own bamboo to harvest them as stakes, but I'm afraid of how invasive it'll be.

      I always put in some type of background music for sped-up montages. When you speed it up, the audio sounds like clipping, so you have to mute it or it sounds awful. I don't like background music for the sake of background music, as I find it distracting. But that's just me.

    I’m interested to see how this turns out this spring. We purchased 6 hop rhizomes to plant this spring but the infrastructure we had planned to grow them up now won’t be completed until the late fall, if it’s completed this year at all. I might try this with the hops or a couple vining plants I now don’t have places for because of the construction delays. Great video, as always!

    Very nice indeed.How do you project it doing under wind pressure and fruit weight? I did notice the clips helping support the vines.I'd like to go vertical with the Canadian Crookneck Winter Squash I grow but their fruit can be prolific and heavy! Peace from MN

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  2 года назад

      I put those clips on to direct the vines to keep them growing straight. They kept wanting to crawl around the sides of the teepee, so I wanted to lock them into position. It isn't actually for support. I'm not sure how this will perform under fruit weight. The cucumbers were no problem (and they're very large cucumbers), but the Honey Rock cantaloupes are a few pounds, so it'll be interesting to see how it handles those.

    Nice idea there. Ill admit I just use cattle panels and T posts.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  2 года назад +1

      I would like to do that, but cattle panels are currently over $30 each, and the cost of wood is through the roof. A "simple" cattle panel trellis these days will cost $100-200, unfortunately, plus the cost of renting a truck since they won't deliver it in my location. I built this because I could do it for $35, and I could easily fit all the material in my car (even the conduit since it fits between seats). I would like to build an arbor, but I did the math and with a U-haul, it'll cost about $300. Maybe later...

    • @TheMillennialGardener

      I have considered it, but I already have so many things I need to overwinter. I have been trying to build a sunroom since *April,* but it has been excuse after excuse as to why the project won't get started (long story). If I ever get a sunroom, it will make it simpler to overwinter things. Dragonfruit would then be a possibility.

    • @JeannetteShoreland

      @@TheMillennialGardener I hope that your sunroom does become a reality! I 'feel the pain' of fig grower's videos wheeling, stacking, and storing all those heavy fig tree containers. Their garages are stacked to the ceiling and their porches are crammed 3-deep with large plant containers. A well-designed sunroom would be a grand addition to the home as well as allow you to enjoy your beautiful plants all 12 months. I suggest that you choose one large enough to have seating and a table for I have no doubt where you will be spending most of your time.

      My thoughts exactly. A lot of people use cattle panels, but they're insanely expensive and almost impossible to pick up unless you rent a U-Haul or don't mind either damaging your pick-up truck or taking on a huge liability of the stuff springs off the bed. Conduit, on the other hand, can fit inside a sedan squeezing it in between the seats and is only $5 a stick!

      They do, but it is a ton of work to bend them evenly, and it is extremely hard to get fittings. Many fittings for EMT-based greenhouses are 1-1/4, so each fitting is very pricey, as is the conduit. I’ve looked into it, but it isn’t cost effective for a raised bed setup.
