- Sir Elton Hercules John CH CBE (born Reginald Kenneth Dwight; 25 March 1947) is an English singer, pianist and composer. Collaborating with lyricist Bernie Taupin since 1967 on more than 30 albums, John has sold over 300 million records, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. He has more than fifty Top 40 hits in the UK Singles Chart and US Billboard Hot 100, including nine number ones in the UK and nine in the US, as well as seven consecutive number-one albums in the US. His tribute single "Candle in the Wind 1997", rewritten in dedication to Diana, Princess of Wales, sold over 33 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling chart single of all time. According to Billboard in 2019, John is the top solo artist in US chart history (third overall), and the top Adult Contemporary artist of all time
"Nikita" is a love song by English singer Elton John set in the Cold War from his nineteenth studio album, Ice on Fire (1985). It was released as the album's lead single, reaching the top 10 in many countries.
In the song, John describes his crush on a person called Nikita, an East German border guard whom he cannot meet because he is not allowed into the country. It features George Michael on backing vocals and Nik Kershaw on guitar.
The song charted at number 3 on the UK Singles Chart, and at number 7 in the US.
In the Netherlands it reached the Top 40 on 9 November 1985 de Top 40 and kept the number one position for 9 weeks..
This performance was filmed by AVRO tv on February 9, 1986 in the tv show 'Wedden Dat'
This song 'Nikita' is no 660 in the Dutch alltime Top 2000 of the year 2021.

Still brings me back to the times hen I was a wee lad going across the famous border to see my great grandmother and other family on birthdays. Many happy and strong memories of those days. It's rather imposing to a wee lad to have these soldiers walking around your car with such weapons and big hats.

Eltons chart dominance came to a temporary end in the late 70s as he branched out and got himself new players, writers and producers. In 1983, though he was reunited with his 70s backing band and just as importantly, Co writer Bernie Taupin and together they made the vibrant album Too Low For Zero and hits like I'm Still Standing and I Guess Why That's Why They Call It The Blues. 1984 brought Breaking Hearts and the massive hit Sad Songs Say So Much which brings us nicely to this song and video. Taken from the 1985 album Ice On Fire, Nikita remains one of Eltons most beautiful songs!
