I am still very new to the IFD series of navigators and very much appreciate this video. After watching it I was of course challenged to learn the proper steps and think I found a slightly easier method. As you demonstrated, we can easily set a crossing altitude at 15nm prior to our fix. That point is not in the waypoint list so we can not set a hold there but the point is depicted on our map screen along the route. Where that point is on the route, press and hold for a moment to activate the "rubber band" function and then release your finger while still on the altitude crossing point. You will then be prompted to name the new point or accept a default name of "RB001" where the number is how many rubber band waypoints you have created during your flight. Once the waypoint is created, you can now easily program your holding pattern. A nice feature of this method is that if you keep the generic name of "RBxxx" it will not save that as a user waypoint and clutter up your IFD. I hope that helps and if there is an even better method please let me know.
One thing which is true of most computer programs is, there is more than one way to accomplish a goal. As you've found, this is also true of GPS navigators. Yes, touching and holding the touchscreen at the altitude restraint location will prompt for a user waypoint there, which can be used to build a hold.
Mark, very nicely done. And you are of course totally correct that the various incarnations of the G1000 (including software revs) -- and I understand even in some cases the G1000 NXi -- difficult to document.
@@midlifeflyer, yep, and those software upgrades need to be worked (certified, I assume) by both the OEM and the Avionics company (in my DA40 case, Diamond and Garmin)... e.g. the most recent available software upgrade for my 2008 DA40 was made available IIRC in 2013.
When showing the GNS, your text overlay says, “Since the GTN doesn’t paint the hold...”. This might be a confusing typo for some. Otherwise good video.

Nice Dan! Good suggestion. Love the IFD. Always more to learn.
Thank You for that great info. The the GTN 750 is my dream box, the problem is that I do not have 18K. Looking forward for your next Video.

Thank you. There are OEM differences. But the bigger problem seems to be that software upgrades are also make/model specific.

Good info since I own the IFD...appreciate the VID! Don/NE Ohio :-)
Thank you Don. The IFD is the one I am least familiar with, so I really appreciate the comment!

Thank you for catching that. I wonder if the RUclips editor will allow me to correct it without have to delete and re-upload.
