  • On this regular segment of his show-"Ride This Train"-Cash discussed and sang songs about a different theme each week. On this show from August 16, 1969, during the height of the Vietnam War, Cash talks about the history of war, then sings two songs celebrating it and one decrying it. He could do that because he was Johnny Cash. Johnny sings "The Big Battle," "Remember the Alamo," and most notably, "Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream."

Johnny couldn't get a recording contract as many of the performers did after reaching a certain age. The record companies said the people wanted to hear the younger artists. He was getting up in age when a rock producer contacted him and asked him to record for him. Johnny was suspicious because so many had taken advantage of him but the guy was sincere. He set Johnny up with a recording studio in his home where he could record himself when he felt like it, his health was failing. The recording was just him and his guitar and sent to Los Angeles over the internet where the record producer, using computers, added backup singers and music. I had no idea until one day I was watching the end credits of a movie and I couldn't quite place the guy singing the theme song so I stayed and read the credits. When Johnny's name came up I was shocked. His voice had changed so much, different but still good. I went right out and bought several albums. Johnny was given complete freedom to record what he wanted. He recorded several of his old songs and covered many hits by other performers. I loved his music from the first time I heard him on the radio in the '50s and will until I pass on myself.

You're talking about his American recording with Rick Rubin in the 90s and early 2000s. He released a ton of stuff with that label. I vaguely when those first started coming out. I was a small kid.

Drives me insane when people go “Johnny Cash would vote red if he was alive today.” And I think man do you know this man isn’t your average country artist. He didn’t like words of division to any group of people regardless of race, color, creed, beliefs and so forth. I genuinely want to be like this man.

I totally agree Nick. I belonged to the Johnny Cash record club and learned to play guitar by playing along with his records. I discovered Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, Arlo Guthrie, Buffy Saint Marie and so many others from the Johnny Cash Show. I grew up on a farm in a small town in Western New York, 64 years old now and have lived a good life with Mr Johnny Cash and friends as the sound track.

Yes he's a great person to look up to. I think its unfair for the reds or the blues to claim him for their own. He was a man for everyone, the prisoner, the underdog, the worker, the rich man, the poor man - he was incredible.

Nobody knows something until they know it. He came around after he’d heard and seen enough. And he took grief for his new stand.

@@John-p9m2c I remember distinctly one summer vacation in the late 60s, picking up the "Boy Named Sue"/"San Quentin" 45 in some southwestern desert outpost in the middle of nowhere. Then (decades later) I saw [my first] show he did in my home town just before his run with American Records, in the local high-brow performance venue. He had a horrible persistent cough that night, but managed to turn away from the mic at the end of every line to cough. I remember thinking, "Man, if I was that sick, I woulda stayed home." :)

@@John-p9m2c More lucky. Circumstances found me in the LA area for 20 years; the right 20 years to include a number of local Cash performances in support of the Def American recordings. "Amazing" was getting permission (back in the day it was brutal) to bring in a camera and shoot the first 3 songs of a show at the House of Blues on Sunset Strip. That was in 97. Two weeks later Cash retired from the road. THAT was amazing too, but in a sad and predictable way. Thanks for watching! It truly is a gift that I'm able to do this... A bunch of years ago some lawyers yanked more than half my clips, and on the ones they let remain they added ads. But a couple clips in particular have really struck a chord with people from all walks of life. If you haven't seen the "'Man In Black' debut" clip yet, wise men still seek it out! lol

People need to get involved and educate about the costs of war. Most Americans know next to nothing, and the do less.
