  • With an output of up to 421 horsepower (310 kW), the completely newly developed Mercedes-AMG 2.0-liter M139 engine is the world's most powerful turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in series production.
    With this engine, Mercedes-AMG has even exceeded the previously most powerful M133 by 41 hp (30 kW). Maximum torque has also increased from 475 to up to 500 Nm. With an output per litre of up to 211 hp (155 kW), the new Mercedes-AMG high-performance turbo engine even ranks ahead of many well-known super-sports car engines.
    The highly efficient powerpack is produced on an innovative production line in Affalterbach.

    Very impressive. Clean, quiet and very Hi-Tech. The entire process looks almost "automated" even though a person is still doing a large part of the assembly work.

    I am sure the owners that have this motor feel some appreciation for the care put into the build. Could this process be much faster, sure. Then again faster is not always better. There is a better chance to catch something physically wrong at this pace.

    Assembly is basic. Needs to be done right though. Where to magic happens is in the manufacture of the engine components and their tolerances. Assembling heads, pistons and blocks etc and then putting them together is basically assembling lego.
    Is this video in slow motion? If mechanics for the plebs worked at this speed and charged by the hour, it would be cheaper to buy a new car.

      Will it use more fuel? Maybe Yes, maybe No.
      Under load such small engine is extremely thirsty. Top Gear measured something like 70 l/100 km for Mitsubishi Evo FQ400 with 2.0 engine. Also such tuned engine is so stressed that the overall resource is relatively small. No thanks!

      @BenzinioB 5 лет назад

      Do you remember the 5.5 litre naturally aspirated V8 in Mercedes SLK 55 AMG - exactly the same power output, slightly higher torque - that's a proper AMG engine. I'll be happy to pay the fuel bills.

      TESLA tried to do as much robotics on their assembly lines, and after a while they found out, some tasks just needed too many repeating tweaks of the robot program, and still would do a lot of "mistakes" and errors. In the end they still incorporate human element in some tasks. Some task are too complicated, not repeatable etc, and sometimes human can see the error outright but the machine cannot.
      However this is as of now, of course robotics will develop more and more, and sometime in the future probably the whole engine could be assembled by a robot. But not for now.
      And of course sometimes human is just cheaper than creating a very expensive robot for it.
