The Royal Guard - Livgardet and the Kalabalik at Bender - Sabaton History 104 [Official]

- From the devastated battlefield of Poltava to the long exile in the Ottoman Empire, Livgardet never abandoned their King. Even when King Karl XII. found himself surrounded by thousands of foes, the remaining four men of his Royal Guard stood by his side. Pistols raised and sabers drawn, the Swedes fought through smoke and fire in the Kalabalik at Bender, protecting their King's life with their own.

Ah yes, Alex Roos, performed classic rock songs such as _Swede Child of Mine_
That was clever...and funny.

don't forget knocking on russias door!
The only thing the livgardet video needed was Indy playing as Carolus Rex. He would have been perfect.
Well he IS a Swedish citizen, so Carolus was his king too.
Actually, he would have! His hair kind of favors those paintings of Charles XII
@@Thomas.Wright Lol! 😄 You're right, never thought about it.
@@Thomas.Wright Yeah! I think Indy could totally pull off a believable Carl XII.
@@Pile_of_carbon although he's already lived longer than Charlie 😢

I'm so glad that this channel is still doing the history of the songs, so interesting to learn
Its the summer and they make me want to learn more than I did in school.

@@C4Cole05 is there too much with that? It's just too much fun to stop 🤣
@@C4Cole05 and that's definitely Exeter. 100 fuckin percent.
King Karl XII is definitely up there on any list of warrior kings.
That's why Napoleon took some notes
Great warrior perhaps, but as a king...not so much.

Demirbaş "iron-head" means a property that never leaves a building. Like if you rent a house and there's a freezer of the landlord in the house that you get to use but its not yours, it is called demirbaş. I think Ironhead was so much fun for Ottoman elites that this comparison entered Turkish literature.
Both of those vids have such a "good time" vibe. A bunch of buddies getting together for a fun adventure. The Livgardet vid was a delight for folks like me, who thrive on fiddly stage details.
And now with the context that Royal Guard is first it makes sense that they're feasting and having a good time in Livgardget as they're celebrating their recent victory.
@@MysteriumArcanum And to me, they seemed to be writing up the "rules of membership" for the Livgardet. They had been through the "trial by fire" and knew they couldn't let just anyone join. They became the core of what was Sweden's SAS, Green Beret, Foreign Legion, Navy SEALS....that sort of thing.
@@SandraNelson063 These days, said rules are pretty much "Do you live in Stockholm?" and "Are you reasonably sane and somewhat physically fit?". They aren't particularly special forces so much as regular men and women with intimate knowledge of every nook and cranny of central Stockholm and more training in urban warfare than the average Swedish soldier who spends most of the time in the forest.
Karl XII was called " demirbaş-iron head" by Turks. the word "demirbaş" literally means iron head but it also means something like "first iron" which also means long lasting property or commodity of state. Most of the expenses of Karl and his army was paid by ottoman empire and the ottoman public servants frustrated by the cost of his long stay called him "Demirbaş Şarl" which means Karl the property of ottoman state.
That is interessting. Thanx for this information. This is the fun part with learning about other languages and cultures. You don't know the true meaning of the words until you are familliar with the culture.
You probably know this. Swedish meatballs and cabbage dolma (traditional swedish food) comes from this period. The soldiers brought that home to Sweden from their time in Bender.
I love the scorpion at @15:54 sitting next to Pär.
Carolus Rex did not drink alcohol very often, but when he did he went on an epic Bender
Yes. Very epic
As far as singing in both english and swedish goes, I gotta say for the live shows nothing felt more hype than hearing sabaton sing in swedish! like the entire energy of the crowd skyrocketed. Love you guys. Awesome live show with awesome energy and indulge us with another north american tour soon!
Thanks for your kind words! We will be in the US after the summer, BTW :)

12:58 Who can't remember the great Sabaton feast?
Tbh. I speak no Swedish but I prefer to listen to the Swedish versions of your songs. I even made my own copy of the "This is Sabaton" Playlist on Spotify in which I replaced the English versions with the Swedish ones, where applicable.
But in swedish they sings about flowers and butterflies....
"Everything there wants to kill you"
Australia: "hold my beer"
Australia's reputation is undeserved. Between Africa, South America and Asia, Australia doesn't really stand out in the "everything wants to kill you" department.
@@Dimetropteryx Yeah but that also includes Australians as well, not just the flora and fauna
Indy, they should have had you in the music video! Though having Laurence of Arabia show up at that dinner would be quite a surprise for everyone involved. Love these videos. Do a Sabaton History special on Genghis Kahn with The Hu when they tour with Sabaton!
Oh, I wish I could see THAT show! I love The Hu and Sabaton, so the two together would be cataclysmic! I wonder what songs they could do together?
Didn't want to stop conquering
Wouldn't stop conquering

Khan's on my bucket list of Sabaton songs I want to see made before I die alongside Patton and the Knights Templar. If you want to know what a Sabaton song about Genghis Khan might sound like, check out The Golden Horde by Battle Beast.

Yes! Finally! I've been waiting for you to tell this story to the world! Most of us swedes know about it from school, but the rest of the world don't know anything about it. It's kind of violent story, just as it shows in the music video.
17:43 I am good Pär, thanks for asking :D
I was a little concerned Axl rose had actually died, and we would have to suffer through the next 3 or 4 days being all guns and roses on the radio. That's enough to drive you to insanity.
Holy I made it within the first 100 comments 🤣
Agree.
The lil' scorpion in the bottom right at 15:51
nice detail!
Great history! What a badass king.
Funny enough, just few days ago I rewatched the Seven Pillars of Wisdom video and scratched my head when I saw the “To Be Continued…” at the end. What are you cooking up, guys? :)
i just love the scorpion that shows next to Per at 15:49. Nice touch :-)
How interesting! Love you guys in Sabaton and Indy for your history lessons and how you express it. I'm so proud I did my military service in Livgardets Dragoner when I was young. In the late 70ths that is. / Micke P
Over 300 years later, in Sweden, we still use the word Kalabalik (which is a turkish word meaning 'crowded') to describe something chaotic or disorganized
Man Roos was such a badass, dual-wielding flint-lock pistols in cqc next to the king out numbered by the thousands
I actually watched the videos in order by complete accident, but I’m so happy that I did. I love Sabaton, and everything they stand for. You guys are one of my favorite bands by far. I only wish that my late father could have been around to experience it. He served 3 tours in US Navy during the Vietnam war. So Sabaton would have been right up his alley. 🤘🤘🤘
I'm from the U.S. and I'm just going to say it: even if it's a very small roll, and even if my character gets killed, I feel like it'd be an honor to be in a Sabaton music video.
This is story is told in Turkey like: Swedes came we accepted them and showed them our hospitality. They liked it so much that they stayed for years, and then they departed with some Turkish customs that they moved to Sweden.
I did not know Swedes fought againts Turks and Tatar Turks that opened them their gates and protected them. They stayed so long that I guess it started to became a burden for Ottoman economy.
It would be a better option for Swedes to return their homeland in time, and a fight had to be fought it would be Poles or Russians not their hosts.
Love you guys!! Coming from United States Arkansas power-to-the-people
Same thing. Just from south Carolina.
From Minnesota here. As the Sweden of the US, we promise not to hyper-militarize once the nation falls apart.
@@rebelgaming1.5.14 yeah, Russia will. Or maybe china
Hah! I read that as United States of Arkansas and was like "Man, their politics are complicated if even Arkansas split up. Gerrymandering got intense."
Best day of the week, just because this🤘🇸🇪
Glad to see this channel is still having new videos. Would love to see more videos about brazilian history, as continuations of the Smoking Snakes video.
Great video as always :-)
"because there will be new episodes"
*Imagining myself sniffing and snorting sabaton's next album*
It's coming closer...
@@SabatonHistory stop teasing me 🥴
I never thought about that they were fighting for their imaginary king in the Royal Guard video. I wonder: Why Sabaton didn't have a dude playing as Carolus Rex?
Love the cover dude
probably cuz of some archaic law saying you cant impersonate the king without permission or something, idk
They were fighting for the crown.
They serve the crown, not the person wearing it
A song about the 1916 Easter rising in Ireland could be pretty cool
Sabaton history and word war two on the same day , you guys spoil us
... Nice Scorpion just... sitting there. Wonderfully done.
You saved my day guys! It's an honor to see you guys from Sabaton history and from our wonderful community.
We have an amazing community, that's true.
The King outstayed his welcome.
The episode was amazing af but i actually noticed between indy and par a really cute panzer III (i think). That was awesome, and the story too, since i know very little about swedish history💙💛💙
i need to know where they got the costumes for the music video because I want one so bad lol
Another brilliant episode and Par looks more a pirate then a Royal Guard hahaha
They should have Chris Bowes guest star on the show and do an episode about the Battle of Cartagena.
I really wanted to hear about why there is part of the melody for a classic danish (and from what i hear, also swedish and norwegian) christmas song as part of the song.
(the part played at the very end, for those curious)
It’s a psalm (297) here in Sweden at least, “härlig är jorden”.
I think the melody is common in most traditional protestant countries.
@@Wloppish I know that the melody is german, and the original text is danish.
Dunno how common it is beyond scandinavia.
@@andreasottohansen7338 misunderstood your question then, the reason they used it is to make it timeless as a tribute. Just speculation tho.🤷 Would’ve been interesting to hear Pär’s thoughts.
@@Wloppish That was exactly what i was hoping for here.
1000 likes, zero dislikes. You guys got some great fans 💪💪💪
I love this series. I learn so much from it, both about history and being introduced to another Sabaton song for me to enjoy.
We like to read that!
Axel Eric Roos is my ancestor! I love this episode, thanks!
Good Grief!!! Imagine what a tour in the Australian Outback must be like if the Sahara's that hostile!?? 😱
Is this where we get a Sabaton song and history episode about the Emu War? xD
@@Pile_of_carbon ZOMG!? What about the Banana War on top of that
I kind of like this format because you watch a sabaton history video little bit of time goes by you watch a bunch of other videos by other people and all of a sudden it's like oh another sabaton history video yay they're like little treats every now and then to bring smile to your face 😁
Can't wait for the new album, because we get to see more of these episodes again 💕
It's true!
Greetings from Novi Sad, Serbia. You did an amazing show on 09.07. at Exit festival! For the first time you played "The Defence of Moscow" live! Thank you guys! Keep up the good work! P.S. - We where hoping that Indy would be at stage on Exit festival dressed as Lawrence of Arabia. :D
I love that Indy is wearing the 99 Problems/Austro-Hungarian shirt
Axl Rose on his death bed:
"Nothing last forever, not even cold November Rain"
I like the scorpio.
And this is why "kalabaliikki" is still a word in Finnish, although usually meaning a loud, chaotic argument with a lot participants instead of an actual physical battle. (maybe in Swedish too, do you guys still use it or is it entirely archaic?)
So *this* is context for the English language music video of Livgardet? I never knew!
That was such an amazing perspective and the story telling got me on my toes.
Is that a flying scorpion?!!!! 15:50
This is amazing story od swedish history, perfect 🤘🤘🔥🔥❤️❤️😊😎🎸🎸
0:52. Karl XII = Charles XII ( XII is 12 in latin numbers).
Karl XII's latin name was Carolus Rex. The song Carolus Rex is on the Carolus Rex album.
Imagine a Sabaton song about Caesar, but it’s in LATIN!
HERE WE GO AGAIN!!
This is going to be a doozy. I look forward to watching this one.

Now if teachers were more expressive, more people would be interested in history.
In my opinion the Caroleans have better uniforms than British redcoats.
Not sure about the redcoats, but the carolean uniforms were made to be both stylish and practical
