On a superficial level yes, these shapes might be visually very classic. On the other hand a lot of it has to do with fashion history. The origin of a lot of these bags is based on fashion house codes, therefore some brands technically can claim them as theirs, since they're the ones with the "first" documented sketches/copies.
I agree.....mostly.......unless of course....it is the shape that the brand was known for....like the Dior's saddlebag....inspired from equestrian OR LV's signature trunk.
The truth is, there is only so much you can do with a bag when it comes to originality. Companies have been doing this for years, they just try and "reinvent the wheel" every so often so it seems like it's new.
The Coach bandit bag is nothing like the Chanel woc -- it has more room in it, it's much more structured, the calf leather is shiny, smooth, and stiff...and a much better bag than the Chanel woc. It's also lined with leather and has some adorable leather pockets and inserts/etc.
Coach has always had a bag similar to the Bandit. I have one from the 70s that I think is a small Penny Pocket and they still make the Dinky which is a WOC. I think the difference is the older styles had their turn lock where the Bandit has the C logo.
To me, the Coach WOC looks very different from the Chanel, no quilting and a strap instead of a chain and the setup of the strap is quite different. For me, the most brazen copying was the Coach Cassie VS the LV Pochette Metis! I get annoyed when people trash less well off people for buying open duplicates (not fakes, but duplicates) yet they think nothing of buying duplicates from other design houses! Thank you for the video!
@@caryspuleston2644yes Coach released the Cassie first But, LV made the pochette metis from the front flap of the old Metis tote (Google it if you've never seen, I have one) so I guess they have that excuse
Food for thought: LVMH owned brands use same "templates" for their most "consumer friendly" / entry point bags and accessories! You will start to see this when you stop to think about this 😘💖 (think camera bags, wallets etc)
I am sick of seeing those so called inspired bags everywhere! Luxury Brands started feel like fast fashion, coming out with copy cats every season but putting unreasonable prices on their goods.
You have to think about where people's brand loyalty lies. For those who love to buy LV, they would purchase the On the Go vs the Book tote, because that's where their eyes go.
About inspiration, I think it’s bound to happen with trends and classic shape but what’s rubbing me the wrong way it’s when LVMH houses have the same stuff just with a tiny little change …
Hi Sophie! Totally agree with what you said about the trapezoid handbag shape. I recently purchased the Tory Burch Lee Radizwell small bag because it reminded me of a white bag that my mother had when I was a child. Funny when I put it all together my mothers bag was probably a Hermes Kelly bag dupe or just a similar trapezoid shape popular of the time back in the day.
I am sure they would have a trademark on their logos but it may be very difficult to trademark the shape. The same goes for shoes. Now some brands are incorporating their logos into the heel.
Cartier also ripped Bvlgari off as well with thier bag that has the same type of clasp Bvlgari uses, except they use the cat. There's a creator on here named Anesu Sogonda and she went through ALL the high jewlery brand bags. She compared the three, and she said the Cartier bags weren't nearly as good quality as Bvlgari. This bag you're interested in especially, i would recommend watching that video before purchasing.
One of the problem with current luxury handbags is that the design is just too simple, too "copy friendly"! For example, I love the Céline classic bag but cannot justify the price for that simple design, would rather go for a unique design like the Loewe puzzle or buy cheaper alternatives like the APC grace bag. Maybe not as "classic" though :)
Oh now you’re so right about Loewe being more unique! Or even Fendi have very much got their own vibe going on. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this! 😊🥰🙏💗xx
@@SophieShohetOfficial Very true! ⭐Many brands have some really special designs but they aren't the most popular (which is quite understandable as many love the classic designs)! Thanks for the fun video xx

I feel like on the go from LV is a much better version of the book tote, as it has internal pocket and shoulder straps too but in general you are right.
YSL Manhattan bag is Kelly inspired. Burberry also had a limited addition leather bag that looks and feels like a Kelly. But let’s face it, bags have been done in all shapes and forms, it’s getting harder to have a unique design. I guess that’s why brands now are adding diamonds to keep people interested.
I think all the brands have a "version" of a particular bag shape and that it's fine because people's resources come in all versions as well. I'm from the US, early 50s and grew up with Coach. It was a superb bag 40 years ago when I got my first one in high school and it remains so (leather bags). I do buy other brands but I am for sure a Coachie- any style I might want, they probably have a version. I'm not poor by any means (I'm an attorney here in the Chicago area) but I just can't justify spending thousands for a particular brand when it's usually just the shape/style of the bag that caught my eye. A lot of people are brand loyal and that's why the brands make sure to have their version out there. Can't stand the dupes though- buy a bag you whose style you love in your price point, it's really ok! Thanks for the video! By the way, the Coach Cassie is a reimaging of a bag from the 90s, the Coach Court bag. The only difference is the compartments- back then we weren't doing compartments, just the inside pockets. Same for the Bandit and Studio- those go back to the 70s: Dinky, Pocket Purse and Penny. 😊
Steve Madden offers so many dupes for designer shoes. And yes, there is so much crossover between designer brands now. I came across a new Prada bag that resembles the Hermes mini Evelyn - and I think it’s actually more expensive!
I came here to write that Steve Madden is the biggest copycat for me, but you've already stated that. Those bags in Sophie's video have only similar shapes, the other characteristic elements are totally different, so it's ok for me. But brands like Madden and some other minor brands just copy the design almost 1:1 and only put a different logo. For me that's an unacceptable action.
Hi Sophie, I think this is fairly common practice as these shapes are not patented, so we will see similars at several price points - I also would prefer for people to buy an inspired bag at a more attainable price point than buying fakes of Chanel, etc and sport those because of only the name recognition - as a counter observation, tank tops are a staple of summer wardrobes and layering under jackets - they have always had various price points, but brands like Loewe and Prada are selling tank tops for several hundred dollars with their logo as the cache for the high price - this I find shameless
That is total BS. You tell me who makes a cotton white tank top with better quality cotton than Prada's............or plain cotton tee shirt. The quality is the best that I have seen with ANY brand regardless of cost.
Classic shapes, like the feed sack, the mail bag, etc.. Who came first? Unless you’re talking about Polene bags, the Fendi First, are really unique, as far as I know.

I’m wondering if it isn’t those luxury brands that lack freshness. After all, other than the quilted bag that anyone can own own pre-loved and the Gabrielle, most other Chanel bags are not attractive or original.
I always loved the capucines bag from LV, but I get very boomed down by the price. This weekend I found out that Tory Burch makes a very similar model, the Britten Satchel, so I got one to try it out and see if I like that style before commuting to the LV price tag.
Hi Sophie! I honestly think that the problem is the lack of creativity of some designers, there're very few who are able to continue to innovate, most of them copy what someone else has already designed or shamelessly copy from the archives. If I had to name a designer who really differs from the others I would say Alexander McQueen, think of his iconic bags! IMO also Prada copied its bags with crystals, who designed them first and with great style was Jimmy Choo, with his Bon Bon bags... Those are bags with crystals!!!
Its not lack of creativity. Of course if something sells really well you gotta copy it to have a piece of the pie too. Its not laziness its a business choice.
Hi Sophie and everyone. 😂 It seems everyone is doing this. Coach also mimicked the Constance with their Bandit. Different inside features though and actually a great bag. Thanks for sharing have a great day 😊
Not a big designer but Kurt Geiger brough out there own version of the dior bookstore called the south bank tote but I like the Kurt wording on the base of the bag which gives it a more unique spin on the design xx
Those who study Fashion history and original silhouette concepts will recognize a dupe or ‘inspired by’ design. For that person , they have the choice. But then there are those who see a bag and simply know if they like it or not without understanding the back story. It can be both a ‘blessing and a curse’ to know too much!
Definitely Gucci's new bag is an exact copy of the alma bb but in their monogram and leather. Also the first prada bag you showed (the half moon shaped one) reminds a lot of the fendi-graphy.
Great video. The Bandit is bigger than a wallet on chain and Coach launched the Cassie before LV launched the Pochette Métis. I think they all copy and are inspired by each other.
Surprised you didn't bring up YSL... i think they copy a lot of the other brands' design. But the classic shapes are probably hard to claim as original designs
1:45 They both look similar to the YSL Carre and Loewe Goya, especially with that sort of bag strap. Brands having similar designs is quite normal, don’t think it’s necessarily outright copying but reflecting certain trends at a certain point in time.

oh, it's interesting and i have noticed this across other brands as well. as you said, how do we know who the first person was who made a bag in that shape?
So my best friend is a bespoke gown maker with couture training and my wife is a textile designer. I can say with confidence (because I've asked both of them this before this video) that the reason for this is simple: you can't copyright a shape of an item in fashion. Copying is inevitable. The only protected element is any patterns and specific colors used. It is a bit lazy but I'm never surprised when it happens. It'd be weirder if it didn't. Coach in particular it makes sense as that was their whole Thing (and why they're mildly frowned on here in the States) but they're under LVMH now so it makes sense for them to make less costly versions of some of their larger brand goods. I do like that it makes certain styles more financially accessible for many people but I personally choose not to engage in those goods. Just my preference.

The Bandit bag is nothing like a WOC. It’s a proper handbag. The only reason why I don’t have one is because it’s too similar to my Coach Studio bag. In all honesty, there’s only so much you can do with a handbag before it becomes more about aesthetics and less about functionality. If you look at bags with a discerning eye, you will notice that most bags have the same, basic geometric shapes-rectangle, square, and trapezoid. Any other shape-circle/triangle or even heart-is more about the aesthetics. Those shapes tend to have wasted space. This is the reason why you can trademark a logo and not a “design”.
I feel like they copy each other all the time! Beauty and function not sure how much innovation when we all use the same materials and shapes, oh and we manufacture in the same places. I think you can really get unique with small limited runs.
Agree about MK. Although, I do have his homage to the Birkin, and I love it! I never really cared for the Birkin, but after using the Michael Kors version, I understand the popularity.
If they could copyright the shape of a bag, no one would be able to create anything. Imagine Chanel suing an Etsy designer for making a generic crossbody quilted bag on a chain.
I love this game haha! Tory Burch Radziwill is inspired by the Peekaboo (I think most Tory Burch designs are inspired by other brands TBH) YSL Manhattan is inspired by the Kelly
To be honest. I only own 2 designer bags by YSL Sac de Jour. But every time I go back to my cheapest bag by Liebeskind I got for 160€. And it has a great leather quality. The only difference is the price and the name. But the quality is the same.
The Prada croissant bag is also inspired by the LV croissant which is around for decades. There are so many inspired brands. MCM is more or less LV last season. Coach is inspired by everyone. The Cassie is the sister from the LV Metis. The Tabby is a Fendi Baguette. And so on. In the end they all steal at everyone and LVMH is laughing and getting bigger and bigger.
I bought a Coach mini bag toward the end of 2022, I actually sent you a picture of it! We both agree it is cute and stylish, but it's also a bit edgy. I ordered it on line and I probably would not have got it had I seen it in person, because it is in fact a wallet on a chain. I can barely fit my phone in it, let alone a lipstick!

I think Celine have a bag like the Constance too?
I feel like they copy each other all the time! Beauty and function not sure how much innovation when we all use the same materials and shapes, oh and we manufacture in the same places. I think you can really get unique with small limited runs.
I think Michael Kors is the one of the most common re-maker of designer brands and they do a poor job of it. Same for Steve Madden. Just my opinion.
Agree about MK. Although, I do have his homage to the Birkin, and I love it! I never really cared for the Birkin, but after using the Michael Kors version, I understand the popularity.
@@alittlebotalexis2474 That's great. I'm sure you look amazing with it as well. Blessings!
Hi Sophie - hope you have had a great weekend, absolutely love your Fendi shirt 💐💐💐
If they could copyright the shape of a bag, no one would be able to create anything. Imagine Chanel suing an Etsy designer for making a generic crossbody quilted bag on a chain.
I love this game haha!
Tory Burch Radziwill is inspired by the Peekaboo (I think most Tory Burch designs are inspired by other brands TBH)
YSL Manhattan is inspired by the Kelly
Cassie came first but you're right
Michael Kors ( Bvlgari, LV, etc inspired...).
Coach Cassie came before LV Pochette Metis
Launer came before Kelly
The bandit I think is trying to look like dior and not Chanel.
These are classic shapes. This is not exactly ripping off. What more can you do with a bag shape really?
Some hint at other brands, and some just look like outright copies! Come on, designers, DESIGN! 😉 xx
Hey lovely Gwenny! You’re so right, although I do love that Cartier bag! 😆 I feel like it gets boring when this happens though 😕xx
