The thing with John, it's not just the amazing technique with regards to his picking, it's combining that skill with his sublime note selection. It's absolutely amazing and fascinating to listen to, and he's still at his best even now in 2024!
Des combinaisons du duel
I couldn't agree more! "Sublime" the perfect adjective ❤
2025 👍
My favorite John McLaughlin guitar tone is here.
Three of my favorite players so far in my lifetime. Sure do miss Joey. R. I. P.
Dennis, one of my all time favorite drummers and fellow Baltimoreian.

I was fortunate to see them at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. A memorable evening spoiled by my car being broken into and my gym bag stolen!!
And remember, that we are speaking about those three world class giants- as you can easily hear here on this concert- at once!
Listen to melody lines, phrases, articulation, rhythm feeling and musicality generally- not only to speed and technique!
Listen a very carefully- what they are playing and how they are playing!
Joey improvising and playing bass with his left hand, unbelievable good !
I was lucky to see this group several times. My favourite guitar trio of all time. So inspiring!
Все гениальны Джой даже на трубе сыграл круто Маклафлин показал высшее мастерство, три человека, как оркестр
Holy Schmolly....and I was lucky enough to see them live!!! I pray they are in the next world too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That’s a very pity, that absolutely nobody else (except me) discovered, how excellent is Joe de Francesco as a trumpet player! He is a world class trumpet player!
I like him playing on the trumpet even more than him playing on keyboards!
(He is really number one Hammond organ player on this planet- ever!)
Superb at every level-McLaughlin at his creative best, well supported by two swinging masters. "The Free Spirits" was one of the best bands John formed-thank you so much for this wonderful upload.
I have been at their concert in Sofia. Great musicians. God bless them.
Fantastic performance!
C'est juste 60 années et 5 minutes de techniques,
Phénoménal.
I saw this show !! I really fly!!!!!
Dennis ❤️

Dennis Chambers is GOD!So Are John and Joey(Rip)!! Heck yeah!! Does anyone know which K zildjian ride he is using here? Thanks in advance.
Never have seen Joey not play a Hammond.
On his las albums, playing B-3, trumpet, tenor and e piano. A genius gone way too soon
Thank you so much it's good
Formidables les trois
Oh...Yeah !!!

pure groove
I thought that was Nick Lowe for a second!
Olvera.
el hombre que sabe
It's so strange to see Joey DeFrancesco behind that dinky Keyboard rig. I guess they couldn't get a Hammond B3. Holy shit man, can that cat ever go off with the soloing!
does anybody know what equipment he's using for the organ sounds together with the visible Ensoniq keyb?
@@lorenzomorgoni524 On the top of the Ensoniq TS-10 there is a Voce MIDI Drawbar Controller V3, and there is a Voce V3 on the right of Joey (you can identify it from the LEDs at 10:59).
@@zjanosy amazing! Very useful info, thank you!
at that time, joey used the ensoniq keyboard as well.. note that he played the pad sound on matinale in the beginning.. (11:30)
Ummm,
Is anyone going to mention the elephant in the room of the man's trumpet playing?
Is that a Gibson L-4 he's playing?
on his website, he has it listed as "1978 Gibson Johnny Smith with Bigsby"
Gibson L5 Johnny Smith

McLaughlin's style didn't really evolved, it's all the same...boring listening to it.....
So true..... Hank who plays guitar at the saloon down the street has the exact style as JM. I wonder why he's not a superstar legend that's played all over the world for decades?
While true he doesn't play the same in the Mahavishnu Orchestra like he does in this set, some McLaughlin mannerisms yeah but the language is different. Plus there's a lot of greatplayers who say in one style like Holdsworth or Bill Evans. (Not saying is bad, i'm a fan of the three of them).
I'm assuming only the smart people got my sarcasm?
@@greggibson33 sorry
@@DiAlexisPimentel Haha. I didn't mean that for you. I meant it for the music challenged comment above you about the playing is all the same.
