- This just may have been my most epic visit to Bacon's Tackle in Shreveport, Louisiana! You know I wasn't going to drive cross-country without a stop at one of the greatest old school tackle stops in the country, and I came with a long to-do list.
First, I couldn't stop at Bacon's without scouring his selection of old school lures from the likes of Bill Lewis, Cotton Cordell, and Smithwick. I also aimed to pick up some of Bacon's Genuine Frogskin lures as well as a rare and mythical topwater he calls the Rolls Royce.
I also brought a pile of antique and rare fishing lures for Michael Bacon to try to revive, including an original Fred C. Young Big-O crankbait, several Jim Pheffer minnows courtesy of Jon and Lyndia at Small Water Charters, and enough spinnerbaits in need of Ol' Ben's tube skirts to make Jimmy Houston's head spin!

I thought this might be one I'd need to watch in two settings, given that it's an hour long. But no! That hour seemed to last around 20 minutes. I've been trying to get a frog skin lure from Mike for the last year or so. Beautiful lures. His workshop is a treasure trove! You should do a yearly video with Mike, and just ask him about some history of something, and record the stories he tells. GREAT stories! This place, Bacon's, is really an unsung American landmark.
Funny, Dave, I had plans to chop this up into two or three episodes, but it just didn’t seem right to deliver this experience in any way other than its uncut form. You can imagine how quickly MY time at Bacon’s flies by when I am there! Good news is, Mike and I already have plans for our next video…
Just now seeing all these comments ! I really appreciate them! I actually just made some more frog skin lures if you still want one!
Great way to start my day, two cups of coffee and a one hour episode of Retro Bassin 👍
And tune in tomorrow for a second weekend episode!
Great episode Chris. Was cool to see Mr Bacon fix up our old baits. Good stuff
Can you believe he had the actually Pfeffer blades!?
@@RetroBassin that is crazy but good
TALL BOY 😄 and yes Bacon’s is the BEST!
Wow you could do a whole week's worth of shows there and it would never get boring I hope someone recordes all his stories before he's lost to time
heyo it's bacon's :D I go by there to get stuff. it's a great place and great people.
I got to visit their last year while working in Shreveport. Only knew about it because of you channel. Mike was awesome and took time out of his day to show ,e anything I wanted. I was enamored by the history of it all. Such a treasure.
That is so cool! Hope you grabbed some Rat-L-Traps…
Haha a pile of traps and old rouges. Mike was kind enough to give me some lips and show me how to install them. Such a good dude. @@RetroBassin
I went to Bacon’s back in the winter because of your vid and yes you will lose track of time. I walked out with some Heddon Swim’n Images in older colors. Some Zoom plastics in long discontinued colors. Of course I found some Traps!! I was at the Horseshoe hotel next door to Bass Pro. Didn’t bother going because my trip was to find treasures at Bacon’s Tackle. Support your independent tackle shops!! Great long video Retro!
That is so good to hear! How many pounds of Rat-L-Traps did you walk out with? Haha
We appreciate your support! We are now the only surviving independent local tackle dealer in Shreveport
This guy is an artist. I'm loving the mechanical screwdriver in the vise. Smart dude!
A Great episode! Especially with a Lure Craftmans! That knows the lure history!
Guys like Bacon are a rare gem this guy is a dying breed. Which I hope all his knowledge doesn't just get forgotten about and thats with a lot of the vintage or old school collectors and sellers. Most of em are up there in age at least the ones that have the amazing collections haha. I really think u could make an awesome series going around the country to different peoples collections and showing them off just like what u did with D's Tackle.
Amazing history lesson there. You never fail to educate. I can't wait to see you fish those lures.
Awesome episode- Enjoyed watching Mr.Bacon perform surgery on the Big O - Awesome channel really love these gem 💎 tackle shops! - thank you Chris!!
This channel is literally therapy for me.
This entire video is as good as it gets! We went over this morning and he gave us the grand tour of everything! VERY INTERESTING to say the least.
That shop is cool! Love that egg beater drill deal!
He is living history! Awesome! Thanks for bringing him in my living room 🤠
Thanks for talking to him about that Red River lure I showed ya! He said it was red turned black but actually I found 5 of them...Red, Black, Green, ,Yellow and an Orange one. Good to hear that it was pre Bill Lewis. 👍
Also, loved the reaction to the cobalt blue midget. That just verifies it's rarity heariing him say he'd never seen one. He's seen many of lures I'll tell you that. Great sit down Chris! Great episode. Ready for the next part!!✌️🤠
That was great, Chris. Thanks!
Thanks for the view!
Holy cow that was incredible!
You shoulda seen it in living color!
Great video. Men like these are a lost treasure of knowledge to the fishing world. Need more history lessons like this.

Cool baits! Love that bronze and black! Sweet!
It’s a nice looking bait for sure
The knowledge you guys are sharing…amazing to watch the love and admiration for lures like this.
Great episode. Worth the entire watch.
Thank you! Definitely a lot to ask folks to invest an hour of their time, but I hope it was worth it!!
Man makes ya wonder about all the baits that never made it to market.
Awesome episode. Got me thinking, if you ever get up WI and want to do an episode on Mepps, I know the team there and could more than likely get you some time with the owner. Great group of folks, they still hand tie all those skirts with local squirrel and deer tails. They also now own Mister Twister, so there could be some history to share about them as well.
Great episode as always!!!!
Not Boy howdy. OH my Gosh. Rolls Roice!!
This is very cool Chris! Great video!

It's been too long since I've been to Bacons. I work a couple of miles away. Ive got some old lures to ask Mike about.
What's up. If you make it down to Orlando look me up I've got some places to catch some bass. I'll break out the old Hank parker lightening rod pistol grip.
