Hawkwind vs Speedy J

  • This is a remix that I did as one of the homework projects for a School of Synthesis: Ableton Live 9 course in July 2013. The brief was to make a cheesy remix of a track of our choice - in truth this is really 3 tracks mashed together: 2 x Hawkwind: 'Sonic Attack' (for the vocals) + The Aubergine that ate Rangoon (the bass + perc loop); and then Speedy J's 'Fill 17' for the arp loop. It's a bit rough in some of the edits and possibly 90s rave in style, but I really enjoyed doing it so here it is. Hope you enjoy.
The clip itself are just pics around the themes of sonic warfare, spacey trippiness and stoner mind-control, all themes the electronic underground is attracted to! ... plus there are snippets of the album cover art from both acts mixed in there somewhere as well.
Shouts to Mike Callander from SOS and everyone in our class for making it a great 6 weeks of audio mangling!
...and of course this is not an authorised or licenced remix so all rights are retained by the respective artists and/or their representatives.

Hey thanx! I've liked Hawkwind for ages, since my best mate and I discovered them in our last year at high school. The class in Ableton Live just gave me the chance to mash together 2 acts who had inspired me all those years ago.

Really, more people need to hear this. Only 408 views ? This is brilliant, mate. I never liked Sonic Attack much as a stand-alone track but loved Aubergine That Ate Rangoon. I've used it in DJ sets on its own. The combination of the three (?) elements is very inspired, and works superbly. People should be playing this out...

+Nick Gilbert Thanks Nick, I'm really glad you liked the track! Aubergine That Ate Rangoon was the first track I remember really getting into from "Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music" and still have it on a mashup in my car system.

Cheers! They seemed a natural fit to me. I used to drop Sonic Attack over SpeedyJ in my DJ sets years ago, but this was the first chance I got to structure it a bit more.

We've lost another one that paved the way for so many other musicians and artists. Only the other day I was listening to Spiral Galaxy 28948 in the car while driving on the freeway between Sydney and Canberra.
