    The video says that the cobra is "still" common in many areas of asia. Unfortunately, they are a protected species here in Taiwan. I'd prefer their protected species status be revoked and to have a bounty put out on them. I had a close encounter with one when I was walking on a sidewalk next to a river in Taipei. I didn't know it was there until I heard the loud hiss it makes when striking, and after I jumped away I noticed its head retracting into the dense brush between the sidewalk and the river. Fortunately I wasn't bitten, and indeed cobras strike even from out of range as a warning, but it was a very close call. That head was about a half a meter from my leg when I saw it, but I don't know how many inches I was from getting a bite. There are a lot of stray dogs in that park (Taiwan doesn't capture and kill them like in the USA, and people who get tired of their dogs just let them loose in the park), and stray dogs don't seem likely to get antivenom after a cobra bite.

    Damn they're a beautiful snake. I love the King, but these are the beautiful ones. They're very flighty though, where the King seems more relaxed, for a reason, I guess, when you're the King, you can afford to be a bit relaxed, knowing you could kill everyone stone dead.

    Snake venom extraction is terribly dangerous and risky.
    I would think that in these days of kevlar vests which stop a bullet and NASA who can put a human on the moon could design a pair of gloves that would resist the powerful strike of a snake's fangs ? Is it so difficult ?

    • @SselluosS
      @SselluosS 6 лет назад +1

      Rajaram S some use chainmail gloves and those work great..but alot don't like them because it slows your hands down and feels clunky

    • @brainstorm8778
      @brainstorm8778 Год назад +1

      When you've raised the snakes from hatchlings and done this multiple times a day for many decades, you don't need them. And the gloves can make it harder to accurately manouevre and even hold the snake. Experience, patience, caution and respect are all that's required. Plus antivenom on standby :)

      I almost got bitten by one that I didn't notice while walking on a bike path by the river here in Taipei. I didn't know it was there until I heard the loud hiss it makes when striking, but fortunately I was out of range. I saw the head retreating into the bush near my right leg, and I was within a foot and a half of it. How many inches I was out of striking range I don't know, but I had nightmares for a week about it and wish they'd get some mongooses (either single gendered or neutered) from India to wipe the cobras out. Instead, they are a protected species here.

      Not at all, I have been keeping snakes for many years and due to snakes secretive nature and how stressed the can be in a large environment will cause real issues for that animal. I often take my snakes out of their tubs into a room and allow them to stretch out for 30 minutes, I often find them jammed between a chair and a wall as they want to feel safe. So these tubs are the best things for these animals allowing us in captivity to best attempted to recreate natural type environments as many snake species live in rat/rabbit warrens all their lives, as they eat the animals that live in these tunnels and stay in there for weeks to digest their food. I hope this allows you to understand the kindness shown to these amazing animals in the racks they are housed in. :)

    • @DharcKamui
      @DharcKamui 7 лет назад +26

      I see a lot of these comments on several milking-related videos, and I don't understand them. The snakes aren't being neglected in most cases, however I'm sure there's a few bad apples. Putting snakes in small boxes like the ones in this video is more beneficial to them than if they were in a larger enclosure. See, snakes are very confined creatures. If you put one of these cobras in a larger habitat, you would find it coiled up in a random corner of the cage rather than moving about its cage. This is because snakes are a defensive species, and would rather keep themselves away from any potential predators. They do this by purposefully putting themselves in a small space, and they feel safer this way. If you were to put a snake in a large container, you'd find that you're wasting that space on something that isn't even going to use 90% of it. On terms of milking them, yes, it does cause stress on the snakes, but their venom is far too valuable to science and medical research to ignore. You might think it's cruel, but not taking advantage of the fact that we have animals which venom could help treatment of cancer and other more deadly diseases is the truly cruel act. The snakes live adequate lives in captivity, and are in no real danger. Besides, it's not like they get milked every day. It's once bi-weekly at most, and considering the substantial amount of danger these people who provide venom go through on a daily basis is admirable given the cause. Not to mention the only way we've been able to prevent deaths from snake bites is purely from milking the snakes which cause them. Before anti-venom was produced, a bite from a western Black Mamba was a 100% death rate. After manufacturing anti-venom, a number of people have survived Black Mamba bites. Just because you see the arguably "bad" side of milking snakes and keeping them captive, doesn't make it entirely bad just because you see none of the good it's doing.

      You think they have them like that because they want to lol, venom is used for many things, at least from what we see the snakes aren't abused

      Pretty common in the reptile world. Understand that these are cold blooded animals made for conserving energy. If you put them in a huge cage all they will do is hide. They hide and do not leave unless they have to for food and water. Most snakes would not be bothered by this with a few exceptions like large pythons, indigo snakes, and rat snakes which do tend to be more active. They like small spaces and are quite comfortable in the dark, as long as they can thermoregulate it's not really an issue.
