I never wish to dismiss anyone's interpretation but it hit me very suddenly one night at work whilst truly focusing on the lyrics that it's about the ocean. If you know how much surfing means to him it's all too clear, also the subtle whisper of "Flow" right after "Holy" and "Right" before "Over". The music itself has a very aquatic feel as well. "Raining from my eyes" and "Crashing at my knees" made me think even further about it. That's the magic though with an artist who chooses to not divulge meanings word for word, we all make our own meanings
+Amanda Kimble This is exactly what this song is about. A "Holy Roller" as referenced in this song is describing the perfect wave. It's not the religious "Holy Roller". Props to Amanda and love from Jeff Spicoli.
Aaron never tells what his songs are about! but look up "holy roller" and a definition comes up as a "holy roller" is a person soo into the spirit of god at a church that they fall over and praise god. I think he is a holy roller for the one he loves. hes going wild for that person.
I listen to AWOL all the time, and it is often that this song comes on. Today, however, I felt such emotion listening to it. I had to fight hard to not cry in the halls of school as I walked alone on this gloomy day, listening to such a beautiful song. I never knew a song could do this to me.
Ive been desperately looking for an interview of awol talking about this whole album in general but this song especially. My favorite in 4 way tie with jailbreak like people like plastic and windows
Every album it seems has its "Holy Roller". Because the Internet - Urn Am - Mad Sounds, No. 1 Party Anthem Supermodel - Fire Escape Torches - Waste Night Visions - The River good kid, m.A.A.d city - Real The Lumineers - every fucking song lmao Native - Don't Look Down Worlds - Sea of Voices Megalithic Symphony - Some Kind of Joke Basically slow songs with not a whole lot of words but I find them to be the best songs. :) I just posted a few of them here
I noticed some Foster The People and more AWOLNATION in that list. And some Imagine Dragons. 3 of my 5 faveorite bands of all time (AWOLNATION is my #1, Foster The People is #3, and Imagine Dragons is #4)
At first I thought this song was just repeating itself over again, and then I listened to the entirety of it and then the drums came in and I shit myself
Still listening in 2019 and was wondering if anyone remembers the "elevator music" version of this where they were in an elevator and playing this song. I try to find it on here but i cant. They sing it so differently and its great.
Some notes I discovered for this song on piano. Guitar part (In the beginning of the song) F E F E F C D E D E C A repeat Holy Roller, blow me over - F E F G F E E F F C repeat Feel free to improvise 😂
The chords are just F, C, F, C, F, C, Am, E, repeat, but strummed as notes 1, 2, 3, and then the last of the chord played together, or on piano, just arrpegiate the chords and tap the last three once (for F, it would be F A C ACF, then C E G EGC for C). The melody is F E F E C, D E D C, F E F E C, D E D C, F E F E C, D E D C, F E F E C, D E D, played together with F, C, F, C, F, C, Am, E, with the chords played two notes into each repeat of the melody
Marin probably not, I've seen allusions to religion in his songs but it's portrayed quite differently than what I'm used to hearing. Idk, maybe I'm wrong! I could totally be wrong.
I don't know. I think it is unlikely and he just tries yo find a fitting title yo the melody, bass and separate lyrics. They seem emotional and I think this may be his way if expressing his inner thoughts and emotions. Either about his current state, or past events that have happened in his childhood. Then again, he may not always be writing the lyrics from his point of view, or in a way that fantisizes things to make a good song, that can allow people to interpret his songs in whatever they feel, and help understand what they feel, based on what they think he feels, or thinks.
I will be in karaoke bar and I'm going to sing this song and I will ask some friends to help me to sing it together. This is how I'm going to propose wedding to my wife!
Jason Vorhees I'd say it doesn't lack the ferocity of Megalithic Symphony. While I agree that it may not be as erratic and energized as the first album, I'd say that Run is actually a much more aggressive album. also side-note, I'm a big fan of your work Mr. Vorhees!
This is probably my favorite song on the album. It just gets to me. Absolutely stunning.
Audrey Hepburn was stunning also😊
Hepburn?
💯‼️👌🏼

I think that is such a perfect explanation!!
+Jessie Hicks right?! lol
+Augie Cardenas But they don't love him back hence the "it's a cold cold brutal world"
... I thought it was about surfing
i thought holy roller was a priest roller skating
This is the best song on Run in my opinion. (:
I cant have a fav song but I love AWOLNATION too but bruh you cant do a smiley face like that it has to be :)
The smiley Gestapo is in de haus!
have got absolutely fucking obsessed with this recently, for some reason. wasn't crazy on it when i first heard it. definitely a grower.
great me too
I just can't explain how truly beautiful this song is, it's so calming, and I love it
I wish this song was longer and kept progressing, but I cant complain about it! Love it!
I listen to AWOL all the time, and it is often that this song comes on. Today, however, I felt such emotion listening to it. I had to fight hard to not cry in the halls of school as I walked alone on this gloomy day, listening to such a beautiful song. I never knew a song could do this to me.
This is probably one of the best songs I have heard in a long time. I just like the sound.
This is kinda like a lullaby 😍😍😜😍
a beautiful emotional song
Ive been desperately looking for an interview of awol talking about this whole album in general but this song especially. My favorite in 4 way tie with jailbreak like people like plastic and windows
great song... I usually like intense songs but I mean this is real music right here... Awol definetely needs more recognition.
:)
Love this song,so peaceful♥
Melancholy vibe...if I ever took my own life, it would be to this song. Hauntingly beautiful.
it aint that deep
🇧🇷 the best
I am so incredibly happy they slowed it down with this one, seeing as the whole album is very electronic.
No song can can quite sum up the feelings of alienation you can feel as a youth in ecumenism
Every album it seems has its "Holy Roller".
Because the Internet - Urn
Am - Mad Sounds, No. 1 Party Anthem
Supermodel - Fire Escape
Torches - Waste
Night Visions - The River
good kid, m.A.A.d city - Real
The Lumineers - every fucking song lmao
Native - Don't Look Down
Worlds - Sea of Voices
Megalithic Symphony - Some Kind of Joke
Basically slow songs with not a whole lot of words but I find them to be the best songs. :) I just posted a few of them here
+pbananah1 I really liked "Some King of Joke". It's a very philosophical song.
Also yeah the Lumineers fit the bill for that category.
some kind of joke is a great song!
The lumineers LMAO TO TRUE but love them😂
+pbananah1 I wouldn't say that The River is like this as much as Nothing Left To Say or Every Night
I noticed some Foster The People and more AWOLNATION in that list. And some Imagine Dragons. 3 of my 5 faveorite bands of all time (AWOLNATION is my #1, Foster The People is #3, and Imagine Dragons is #4)
Forgot how awesome this song is😌
Wow. Listening to this album for the first time and this song is a huge standout for me.
me too
It seems like "Hallelujah" mash up with "Can you feel the love tonight". Actually it reminds me The lion king + Shrek.
Btw nice song
+digimondudeify no
+digimondudeify I'd imagine it's hallelujah by Jeff Buckley. Completely different song.
Jeff Buckley only did a cover. The song is by Leonard Cohen.
Gives me chills. Great song :D I love the rhythm
Favorite. Beautiful!
At first I thought this song was just repeating itself over again, and then I listened to the entirety of it and then the drums came in and I shit myself
I used to smoke way to much while listening to this song. Brings back some weirdly peaceful memory's.
it's a cold cold brutal world
oN ogih it really is
Certainly is. I have learned.
Especially now
Maybe if you live in russia, but here in America the sun was out today
Most underrated awolnation song
What a great song! Strange how it isn't more popular.
I know
I was walking from Market to Fisherman's Wharf on a really nice day when I was hearing this song. Probably the best day I've ever had.
Absolutely love this song
i love this song it makes me feel good
i just realised why i like this,
it sounds like a night in the woods song
Great song👍👍
You grate chez. This is a song.
ffs.. i just LOVE this track!
i like the background music soo much
Me too !
This song's really giving me a Beach Boys kinda vibe
Praise God.
This song is so pretty xD
Best song on the album!
The chorus seriously reminds me of Drew Monson's music
Lovely song I must say 😊
cant wait to see u guys in billings
Dope.
ROAD ROLLER DA!
If you read this,I love you Sarah.
I'll never forget you.
What happened to the version of this that was done in the Dallas hotel elevator? I loved that version.
2:55 what it sounds like to ascend into heaven
Still listening in 2019 and was wondering if anyone remembers the "elevator music" version of this where they were in an elevator and playing this song. I try to find it on here but i cant. They sing it so differently and its great.
here it is www.dailymotion.com/video/x2xitey
my favorite :3
I feel so bad, I thought I was a HUGE AWOLNATION fan, well obviously I'm not cuz I didn't know this song existed until about 2 mins ago
Fuck this song is a beast of harmony
For some reason this song always reminds me of Kingdom Hearts.
Some notes I discovered for this song on piano.
Guitar part (In the beginning of the song)
F E F E F C D E D E C A repeat
Holy Roller, blow me over
- F E F G F E E F F C repeat
Feel free to improvise 😂
The chords are just F, C, F, C, F, C, Am, E, repeat, but strummed as notes 1, 2, 3, and then the last of the chord played together, or on piano, just arrpegiate the chords and tap the last three once (for F, it would be F A C ACF, then C E G EGC for C). The melody is F E F E C, D E D C, F E F E C, D E D C, F E F E C, D E D C, F E F E C, D E D, played together with F, C, F, C, F, C, Am, E, with the chords played two notes into each repeat of the melody
LOVE
What are the words spoken on top of the second part of the chorus? The three that accompany the bass-y notes?
our two month old pup just died now
I think this might be the best song on the track next to hollow moon.
HOLY ROLLER DA
I wish the drums were in more parts of the song
Ahhhhahhhhahhhha
cold cold brutal world
Amazing ! More amazing than KevinKlien90 face
I fucking love this song. It kind reminds me of a church song but much better.
+Nicole E I agree.
Is Awol a believer?
Marin probably not, I've seen allusions to religion in his songs but it's portrayed quite differently than what I'm used to hearing. Idk, maybe I'm wrong! I could totally be wrong.

is this song in 6/8 or 4/4
I will be in karaoke bar and I'm going to sing this song and I will ask some friends to help me to sing it together. This is how I'm going to propose wedding to my wife!
And how it was ?
can someone expain me what this song means? D:
cobtac V I think it's about that moment you realize you're in love with someone...just my interpretation, anyway.
2019?
its sounds like the lion sleeps tonight. from the lion king
As from 2:58 ♥
Does the beginning of this remind anyone else of Robot Unicorn Attack?
2:58
reminds me of flow by cage the elephant
Super catchy, but to give it some constructive criticism, I want to hear just the music at the beginning
What does "Holy Roller" refer to?
HypnotizeNLP I think an extremely religious person
Im HOLY look me Up in Getamped 2 BRUH.
Is it just me or does this sound a lot like Radiohead?
tibor29 I think so too, I just came here after listening to Karma Police because I started to think of this.
Totally get a feeling of Elton John in the Vatican with this song... Not that that's bad. Definitely not!
6 caballos no es coincidencia
Does... Does anyone else hear Pikmin - Forest of Hope throughout this entire song?
idk if anyone here watches the show "fear the walking dead" but if you do,
does this song remind you of nick or is that just me lmao
+llih aidyl 5 months later and i still think the same thing when i listen to this song
10 months later and yet I still think of nick when I hear this song
No offense, but this sounds like forest of hope in pikmin.
I see it
This album lacks the ferocity of Megalithic Symphony.
Jason Vorhees This is true however this album is still great it just has a different sound
Jason Vorhees I'd say it doesn't lack the ferocity of Megalithic Symphony. While I agree that it may not be as erratic and energized as the first album, I'd say that Run is actually a much more aggressive album. also side-note, I'm a big fan of your work Mr. Vorhees!
Run is more of a slower emotional album
It's more aggressive. It's more of a collection of thoughts rather than happy times.
well it takes a lot to match the ferocity of Jason Vorhees
He needs to be a little more aggressive...SAIL!!!
Shhh
Lion King rip off
