  • You may remember my Pierce Audio 24" subwoofer testing and auditioning. It's now time to build some custom enclosures and get these things looking proper. In this first part I'll show you my construction methodology and in part 2 I'll finish, assemble, test, and have a lot of fun with them. Thanks for watching.

Back as far as the early 90’s, I used fibreglass resin to coat the inside of my mdf enclosures . Basically just used a paint brush, and it made the enclosures joints extremely strong and sealed .
Of course I figured out the displacement of the resin into the equation, as I typically used a half litre .
On the exterior of the enclosed I’d just use bondo on the seams

Now that's a subwoofer. I like mitering all the panels in a box, but that gets tricky with something that big. Those will be a lot of fun when they are done... Looking forward to the next video.

That's a big box! Looking good. I also use Bondo and glazing putty. Typically on much smaller boxes. That must have been fun to do :)

NIce job! Quick and clean. It was fun though to see you putting glue with ear protection on ;)

Nice job Ryan! Looks nearly as big as the one my brother and I did :-) His is 48"*24"*21.5". I hope yours turns out awesome!

Some years ago, I was involved in a vibration test that needed 24" speakers. We found we needed the cabinet wall thickness to be at least 75mm thick !! And lots of internal cross-bracing using 50mm x 50mm struts. We also used plywood as it's stiffer than MDF

robert webb what frequencies were being reproduced? The size of the driver should not affect your testing. It’s the frequency and amplitude that affects vibrations/resonances.

Have you ever designed studio monitors before? That would be an awesome build to see. Thanks.

BW Sound Solutions the Life S5 series I have comes close. They are very much like studio monitors and have the frequency response of a studio monitor. But they aren't as big as most studio monitors.

Impulse Audio I want to get more familiar with the measurement software and build some good studio monitors myself. The price of some of these monitors like barefoot audio to me just seems crazy. I always read good results on them but at that price range that would mean not paying my mortgage for a year! Lol

That things going to pump.I'm not sure if there is anywhere available in Canada for it,
but we have people around me that powder coat MDF.
Not sure how well it will look on the seams as I dont think it will coat bondo, not sure though

Richard Parnell interesting. Never heard of powder coated mdf. I think it would do a good job hiding seams but other heavy/thick products like duratex tend to show seams as well. So its hard to know if it would work.

That's a pretty tight box for that large of a driver. Not a criticism, just an observation. How low will that bad boy go and SPL? I like vented enclosure LF extension, but not the size. Can't wait for part 2 :D

Ya it's a bit undersized unfortunately but WAF won this time for the guy who will own these. They begin to roll off below 30 or 35hz but have useful output down to well below 20hz. If I went vented the enclosure would have been huge.

I did a lot of testing on sealing the end grain and the joints without resorting to bondo and fillers. I found a 50/50 mix of yellow wood glue and water, painted over the seams and ends and then reapplied after 10 minutes works extremely well. Followed by a couple coats of either sand-able high build automotive primer or Zinnser Bin Primer(red and white can) that contains shellac made the seams impossible to see. Top Coat was 2 coats of high grade Acrylic exterior paint. IMO part of the secret is not rushing the drying time so everything you apply creates it's own layer and doesn't meld into the previous one. If time is of the essence your method of bondo and spot primer works just as well.

I dunno man, I've tried that too. I don't mean hiding the grain. This isn't a sealing/sizing issue. I can hide the grain just fine. Over the months and season changes that line always shows itself. I have an example right beside me with a 3/4" round over. Right at the start of the roundover theres a thin line all the way around the baffle you can ever so slightly see in the right light. Drives me crazy!

Yeah you are talking about where the butt joints are. Maybe it's just the super high quality acrylic paint I top coated with. 100% Acrylic paint will expand and contract without cracking and being an exterior paint grade makes it all that much tougher. I wonder how much humidity levels and surface temperature matter when doing the finish. I did all the work indoors with humidity and temperature controlled.

king pin I don't think I've tried a high quality acrylic. I've tried water base poly mixed into a decent acrylic to try and add a bit of elastic strength to it. I've even had butt joints show through veneer! Maybe our west coast humidity fluctuates too much :o

    • @btdtgg
      @btdtgg 6 лет назад

My family owned a Home Hardware who makes their own paint. Maybe try a liter of exterior acrylic on some test pieces. I agree about the elasticity it was the point I tried and failed to above.

That's why Duratex is so popular. Covers up defects and looks halfway decent. Not everyone likes the look though.
