  • I have wanted to drive a Peugeot 205 GTi for over 30 years. I learn to drive and passed my driving test in a 205 and have always had a soft spot for them. So when my good friends at Anthony James Cars invited me to come and drive this immaculate example I jumped at the chance.
This car is actually for sale. For more details of this car and their other eclectic range of stock visit
www.anthonyjam... or cal Daniel on 01403627100 and say I sent you !
Here is the link for the 205 GTi

Morning Pete.... oh boy, this bought back some memories... 1989. I was an impressionable 23 year old and I was given one of these as a company car after winning top company salesman of the year 2 years running. 1.6 ... jet black... Luther Vandross on the stereo.. a beautiful girl in the passenger seat... long summer nights in a country pub with mates... burning off anything that fancied a race... no mortgage..no kids.. all my earnings was disposable income... petrol price about £1.50 a gallon.. my poor poor parents telling me every day to grow up... me telling them to get a life and not be so square in my skinny jeans and very stylish haircut.. 🤪 Can you test drive a time machine next please? I would love to go back, just for a day...

Yes "analogue" is an insightful word to use for the Pug. I bought a new 1.6 GTI in '88. It had a tactile fluidity that spoke to the driver. It didn't try to wrestle the laws of physics; it danced with them. Peugeot chassis had a bit of 'give' in them that supplied the feel and communicated to the driver what was happening to the wheels on the road. The torque steer could be forgiven as it was only evident in town but in the lanes it was forgotten. I fell in love with my Alfasud but the Pug was better in bed!

This car has an authentic 'pearl' effect. It has the ability to stand out between modern sport cars as if they were a bunch of oysters. It still looks stunningly good!

I have the same thing with the Fiat Uno Turbo ie Mark 1 - had one when I was 22, I'm 56 now and I stillthink it was the best car I've ever owned. Also drove a 309 GTI for a while, which was utterly amazing. They don't make 'em like that anymore...

I had a red 1.9 as my first car back in 1999, paid £1300 for it. Absolutely fantastic little car, I've never known a car that hates being in traffic so much as it just wanted to "go" all the time. Really great video, thanks for the memories.

Wow! Your video took me straight back to 6 Aug 1986 when I collected my brand new 205GTi 1.6 and 115bhp. It was one of the first 115bhp models as on launch they had 105bhp. Oh it was fabulous and was in Alpine White. All the black and red on the bodywork stood out so well. It drove so well. I ran it in for 2000 miles then changed the oil for some new stuff ... Mobil1 and then floored it! It went like a bullet ( coming from a Ford Fiesta 1100). I have some pictures somewhere which I shall try and fwd to you. Thanks for the memory👍

Great video! Can see you enjoyed the whole time driving that 205! I can relate.. when I was a kid (I'm 37) this was one of my favourite cars. Two years ago I bought and fully restored a french XS, and believe me every time I get in I travel back with that nice smell, that seats, that everything analog feeling. Sometimes I just sit there and feel happy. Only drove it 2000 miles in two years but enjoyed every second. I also own a modern SUV so driving this feels like a go-kart!

Lovely car , I have owned one since 1990. My first was a 1987 1.9 , which got stolen and was used by some burglers. I had it returned , damaged , buying it back from the insurance company. It still had some of the tools inside, used by those who stole it and I had to collect the interior from the police station. Eventually got it going again and few years later sold it to Just GTI's for £100. Yes 100. Had a Miami Blue limited edition 1.9 for last 12 years . So good . Thank you for this review .

Bloody awesome Peter! When I was stationed in Germany as a whipper snapper Gunner my friend had a 1.6 GTI with a Janspeed exhaust. I drove it back to the UK from Dortmund and it was so much fun. There were 1.9 GTI’s on camp as well as RS Turbos, early XR2’s, XR3’s. It was an amazing time for me and it’s what gave me my passion for cars. The autobahn at 18 was just a car playground lol

I owned the 309 gti , it was the most fun car I’ve owned, I’ve been through about 20 different cars including Alfa’s but I always remember the Peugeot as my favourite, a proper go cart of a car without all the sensors and nonsense gadgets of today’s motors, loved that car

309 GTI was underrated. The longer wheelbase made it more stable than the 205. Loved mine, 1987 in black.
Sadly I lost it when some idiot crashed on to the back…
Wanted to buy another one and was very close to buying a white one, but stepped over to BMW.

I had a 1.9 205 GTI 1990 Red on a H reg with the new back lights on them, i had it for 5 and a half years from 20 to nearly 26 , I'm 46 now, mine was absolutely mint when i sold it, i only sold it because we had a kid and couldn't get a car seat in it and pushchair, i had to sell it 😫 , it was the time when insurance costs were sky high because of cosworths getting stolen etc, i had it on AutoTrader for weeks with no phone calls, it was totally unmodified mint and i sold it to a local car garage for £800 😢 and to be honest the bloke didn't really want it as he said people don't want them due to high insurance cost etc, Omg i wish i still had it now it would be worth thousands, i loved that car a true B road machine great handling, lift off oversteer, great great car, i have 5 kids now but have a z4 coupe for the weekend's and I'm going to keep it due to prices going up and up, but do miss the raw driving experience of my 1.9 205 GTI ...
Engines were strong never any had any issues but i blew 4 gearboxes and 2 back axles broke in nearly 6 years i drove it , weak gearboxes and suspension components, but everything else was fine. Still was excellent condition..

This made me cry. This was my Baby. My first car in 1986, right after I got my license. 1.6 L.- It was the BEST. I got my top speed for that time at 197 Kmh, downhill and with the wind in the back. On a side note, compared to today's Mini, - the 205 is about 5 inches shorter!, but it never felt that tiny.

Cracking review as always, P! I remember owning a 405 SRi, with the same powertrain as the 1.9GTi, and that was a fantastic driver's car, despite the extra weight - it would go into corners at almost any speed and just hang on and on and on. Forget Ferraris and Lambos, if I ever win millions on the lottery, my first automotive purchase would be a well-sorted 205GTi, without any doubt, whatsoever. Keep the great reviews coming!

I had a black D plate 1.6 GTi, which I replaced with an H plate 1.9 in Sorento Green - the greatest car paint job ever. I'd happily give up one of my testes to be able to drive that 1.9 again. Those cars were so good that I still buy Peugeots, even though they're not always so good now.
My 16 plate 208 GTi was decent, but my current car is a 69 plate 308 GTi which is quick but otherwise dull.

I'd get home & just stand there looking at it for ages amazed at how good it was. Light, simple, beautifully tuned & drop dead gorgeous. A mate of mine was equally as hooked & still has a 1.9. I remember him telling me to avoid the later versions with catalytic convertors which hit performance.

My 1990 pre-cat 309gti is the one thing getting me through lockdown. That and the MC Hammer casette inside it's clarion headunit.
It's like a magnet wherever I go, people wave and thumbs up, stop me at traffic lights and petrol stations to chat. Yes the interior rattles away and you have to shout to your passengers (there's no sound insulation under carpets) but it drives sublimely and handles like it's on rails. At around 900kg it simply boils down to weight which you cannot avoid in a bloated modern car.

Same as you Pete - first driving lesson on 17th birthday in ‘89 and lusted after the same cars. First car was an A-reg Metro 1.3L, but I really wanted the MG. Got my second car in ‘90 - a C-reg 205 1.4 (1360cc) GR (pre dashboard redesign in ‘’88) - 59 bhp. Of course I wanted a 1.6/1.9 GTI....Time for time, this was my favourite car. At the time we were not actively thinking that we needed aircon, power steering, digital clocks etc. Apple CarPlay? Negative - make some cassette mixes and put then in the glove box - actually, I had a nice Fischer cassette holder that slotted into the dash. I never drove the GTI, but we had a 309 SRI pool car at work and that went like s**t off a stick.
Thanks for the video - a truly great car at the time. Cheers

This brings back so many memories. I owned a 1.9 in 1993, G reg and loved it. I was never blown away by the handling, it was super twitchy when you lifted off 😃 It would be so good if you ever managed to drive other classics like the Renault 16v (valver) and the Integra Type R and did a vid on them. Here’s hoping 👍

Our family car was a 309gti when I was growing up. When I passed my test I had a Renault 5 for a couple of years, then the 309 was passed onto me. Wish I hadn't sold in now. A lot of people said the 309 was a better car as the longer wheelbase wasn't as twichy but I haven't driven a 205 to compare. Great review as always.

Hi Peter the only down side to owning a 205 was that it would rattle from every interior trim panel, it would drive you mad but.... when you drove it the way it was supposed to be you forgave everything, it didn't matter. Now did you know, BBR did a turbocharged conversion for the 1.9 engine in the 205 making around 175 to 185bhp which back then would give a Sierra cosworth a fright. I was also lucky enough to have a passenger ride in one, it left me speechless it was that quick, Peugeot certainly knew how to make great cars in that era.

Had loads of hot hatches back in the day, 5 turbo, couple of XR2’s, a couple of XR3’s, a Mk1 Golf GTI, a Lancia Delta HF Turbo but never got an RS turbo or a 205 GTI. I did test drive a 1.6 one but it had a sloppy gearbox, so didn’t buy it. Always listed after a late 1.9 GTI in Miami Blue but with the likes of this car going for circa 22k I guess I’ve finally missed the boat. Great car and by the looks of it, a fantastic restoration. Once again loved the enthusiasm Ped. Great video 👍🏻👍🏻

Have a 2013 RS5 cab which I love (kids fit in back, decent boot & 4WD for winter), however, do very little miles during a typical week/month so all the local short journeys in a V8 are returning approx 16mpg. Thinking about getting rid & picking up an GTI mk2 / XR2i / 205 / 306 gti6 for budget £6 to £12k ish as a more economical runaround. But then the sun comes out & a rumbling V8 with the roof down is hard to beat!!!

My first car was a Red 3 door G reg 205 1.8 diesel. It wasn’t very quick but handled well. I always lusted after the GTI. I forgot about the non power assisted steering. That was a good workout. We also forget how cocooned we are in modern cars. only difference on the dash was the GTI steering wheel and a rev counter instead of a clock. Brings back so many memories. Mine had an immobiliser which used a separate fob that looked like a large hifi headphone plug. However it turns out you can bypass the immobiliser by push starting the car. I found this out when I thought my battery had gone flat. I had forgotten to do the immobiliser. Doh 🙄

Hi Pete, mate what a trip down memory lane. I loved my Pug 205 GTI, proper back to basics driving again, no dumb electric seats or power steering etc. Drivers today have become so pampered I really don't understand the need for it all, and the added weight is so unnecessary. I was working for Dragon Ford in Haverfordwest Pembrokeshire when the Fiesta RS Turbo came out and that thing was mental, the torque steer was so dangerous, but damn it was fun. The Renault 5 Turbo had so much lag but when the Turbo kicked in it was a right handful, again dangerous by todays standards but so much fun, you actually had to drive hot hatches unlike new cars which take away all of that and drive you. The 80s was a great decade for cars, music, and I was having the time of my life back then, l hate this getting old business lol. Take care mate 👍👍👍👍👍🏁
    If I had £22,000 I'd buy it in a heart beat 👍🏁

I've had both 1.6 & 1.9 GTi's, they were my favourite hot hatch of that time, every drive was exciting, they are almost alive with feel and no new car feels like a 205 gti.
The 1.9 was Quicker than most hot hatches to 100 mph, apart from the 16v golf and Series 1 RS turbo, all level on 22 sec dead to the magic ton....(it mattered in 1991) everything else was just not as feel some and I've had most 80/90s hot hatches in my time. XR2, XR3i, RS Turbo, 2 x Mk1 golf GTi's, mk2 16v Golf gti, Gordini R5, clio 16v, 2 x 205 gti....now I drive a Van🙁

Brilliant review of THE hot hatch of the 80s. I had a mark 2 Fiesta XR2 ( '88reg ), but I knew the 205 1.6 & 1.9 were better. I saw an XR2 parked few yrs ago and was shocked how basic and sparse the interior was! Just like the Pug! I kept mine until it had 99,000miles, needed new valve guides and the boot lid was rusting. It had no power steering, no air con, all analogue and I loved it. 👍Andrew K-B.

Had the lovely green seats and carpets. Still have it but needs a full resto now. Had different gearing - diesel box I think which was great for the motorway - 100mph was 4,000rpm, instead of about 80@4k with the 1.9 box. Thanks Ped 👍🏻
