I actually saw this one on tv in the 1980's in the Chicago area on Channel 26 during an AWA wrestling broadcast. The channel is now a Spanish broadcast station.
GSN airing in 1997. Buddy's hair reveals it was filmed around 1970-71 or so. I have read that the high volume of anti-smoking PSA spots was what made the tobacco companies effectively volunteer to give up TV advertising since that way they figured all these kind of spots would then be apt to disappear.
The cutoff was the start of 1972, wasn't it? I think I was actually watching that last half-hour before midnight and saw the final Marlboro Man commercial.
January 1, 1971 I think was the date. Last one aired on the Tonight Show before midnight. 1970 broadcasts of Monday Night Football still have cigarette spots but not 1971.
This Buddy Hackett comercial actually does exist! I saw it once in 1976 and none of my friends believed me when I saw the short 10 second video. Well now I know I didn't imagine it. And glad my dog saw it also to keep him from smoking. 🐕
I don't smoke.... My wife dont smoke..... I have three children.... They dont smoke..... I had a camel.... His name was Joe..... He smoked......and the rest is history.....
I remember this commercial originally aired----was it really in '76? How time flies. I always thought the punchline, (or climatic message) was stupid---we all know dogs don't smoke. It would have made more sense if Hackett had finished the commercial with, "I had a good friend. He smoked. He's dead." I guess that would have made too much sense...ah, well.
Been looking for this for YEARS. Best commercial of all time
