  • My, he still looked dashing!!!
Color screen test for Desire, which in the end was filmed in black and white, and didn't star him. The test was made on Marlene Dietrich's intervention.

That smile was devastating! Such a sad life. If you look at his expressions in some of his old silents you can see that he had a depth of emotion that would have carried him fine in later films if the studio system had not jerked him around. Still we have some of his films... and what a handsome man he was... that smile though... sigh.

It´s almost like the smile of a dead, fragile man who is sagging below the waist.

@@honeybeeisme Fast Workers, have you seen it? 😂 Well, i have seen it but it broke my heart. It shows John Gilbert being unfocused, as if he wandered in a different space.

@@honeybeeisme And Fast Workers? 😂 Talk about a terrible film. The direction is awfully one note. It shows right there that his timing is wasted.

The two books that define his life and career are of course, DARK STAR, by his daughter Leatrice Gilbert Fountain, and JOHN GILBERT: THE LAST OF THE SILENT FILM STARS. Golden's book was loved by Miss Fountain, and was the last book she read before she died several years ago.
Golden explains in excellent detail how Jack's voice was perfectly fine.

Love the style of the 30s. So HANDSOME and CLASSY.
Male actors nowadays dress so sloppy.

How sad to think he would die just a year later at the age of only 38. Louis B. Mayer hated him and destroyed his career, not his voice, which was perfectly fine.

Mayer screwed over or damaged several of MGM's stars. He ruined Judy Garland's life. Evil in the pursuit of power, control and money. The other studio heads weren't much better.

And Judy Garland had to contend with both Mayer and her mother not helping her

Great to see him first time ever in colour as he would have been . Sadly , he and the studio should have held out his first talkie as they did with Garbo when the new found technicals were smooth out more so . He would am sure been able to have made the transition . And perhaps as life always is , hindsight best Garbo did not marry him .
