  • Another faulty Cambridge Audio CXA80. This unit has a fault code that says there is DC present on the output. This unit had previously been looked at by Richard Sounds who reported that they had changed the main board without result. When we look inside we find that this is not the case and we see that there is some adhesive that's gone a bit wrong and corroded a bunch of parts. Board cleaned up and parts replaced and we are good to go.

. . .My friend's just bought a CXA81 and I'm regularly wearing it out playing "Pick Of The Pops!" on it - fortunately my friend's new amplifier hasn't gone wrong yet!
. . .I do have a Cambridge Audio Azur 540A V2.0 to repair myself - the Seller I bought it from said it had been butchered!
Keep the excellent videos coming, I've subscribed!

I repaired one of these recently with the same issue in the same spot. Same corroded leg on the transistor!

So the parts with corroded legs were replaced and board cleaned?

Richer Sounds actually acquired the Cambridge Audio brand and they have the gear manufactured in Malaysia. I would advise friends to get CA stuff to start an interest in HiFi.

I don't like the newer Cambridge Audio stuff either. They sound good but they're made in China using some very cheap and nasty components in places, and some wonky assembly practices as well. They've been getting progressively worse since their acquisition by Richer Sounds in the mid-1990s. Really they're no better than the stuff the like of Currys imports, except that they do have thorough engineering from a sound perspective.
They make sense as a new purchase with Richer's extended warranties but at the prices they sell for second-hand, no way. Disposable.
