    So this is the description for real fans who like seeing just stuff you may say I'm copying Pariah haha... yes. But no this whole video was inspired by him and Fukurou Hoseki.
    Also anything I missed about Sonic in this will be further talked about in other character in depths including a certain Egg…
    And I just like the simplicity of Pariah's editing. I will change it up every character in depth but I wanted to start it off with him because he confirmed everything like I said he kind of came at the right time of my channel you know, but overall I will try a new editing style next for Amy.
    Eggman will be the same since they both show up in Sonic 1. But thank you all for watching and Happy Birthday Blue Blur. The next video will be out soon not too soon though I promise.

    5:40 THIS is the truth! yes, sonic has American influences but it's important to note it's SEGA'S IDEA of what American culture is like but is still largely Japanese, that's a huge distinction from what American writers do with Sonic which comes across as ooc or off-brand or just flat-out recreations of the cast. Japanese Sonic has the vibes of early dragon ball, Sonic was never supposed to be a flanderized western-saturated franchise where american writers inserts & interpretations take precedent over the Japanese status quo.

      Not that different it would probably be seen more in the light of DBZ or Final Fantasy maybe even Mario. Just having solidified character since creation that existed since creation. But that’s a totally different reality than what we got.

    I never knew there was a major "localisation problem" with the games until I looked into the Japanese dub of forces where all the parts us westerners scratched their heads was actually the result of mistranslations. Never thought much about there being a major difference because I wasn't that versed.

      It’s not that bad from 2003-2009 so it’s only been like that for 1991-2002 and 2010-now. American writers take over so it’s kinda retroactively changed. When it’s specifically Forces it was written in Japanese changed in America then rewritten again in Japanese so technically it’s a fumbled mess lol.

    Ive been too ashamed to say this as a sonic fan since birth.
    But ever since colours, all I felt was disconnect and betrayal.
    I want to cry just looking at the direction sonic is going now. From the start of sonic boom, to sonic prime, all the archie comics, to the hollywood sonic movies. I honestly secretly hate all of it and it hurts my heart. Its just way too different.
    I grew up watching the Sonic OVA multiple times, playing CD, playing the dreamcast era. From Sonic adventure 1 and 2, and millions of hours in sonic shuffle.
    I miss the Jpop, I miss the Jrock, I miss the quintessential japanese designs.
    I miss the cheesy shounen writing, I miss his slick, quiet and chill attitude.
    I miss the Japanese view of western society.
    And ever since I learned japanese fully, I just miss it more and more. These days I can't be bothered look at new sonic stuff, because its not the sonic I know. Heck none of the characters are the same.
    But I still have a soft spot....

  • @Rainyar4779
    @Rainyar4779 Год назад +15

    Hey your video actually inspired me to write my own Sonic Character Analysis, here's the Analysis that i wrote on my phone:
    Classic Sonic
    Classic Sonic is the original one, he has a Sonic attitude, Unlike American Sonic, his attitude is expressed in more subtle ways, he expresses it through body language and rude mannerisms. One thing is he used to be a loner, often travelling the world alone and closing himself to others, he was known as a "legendary hero" although Sonic never considered himself as one. His friends usually had to gain his respect, like Tails who managed to keep up with Sonic so he decided to let him hang around usually keeping an eye on him. In Sonic Adventure, Sonic learned to open his heart to others and be a lot more friendly. Ultimately, Sonic's goal is to have the freedom to live his life to the fullest, and give other people a chance at freedom, as well.
    Maekawa Sonic
    When Sonic was created, he was always supposed to be a sort of "bad boy" but Japan and America had very different definitions of the term, while Japan made him rebellious and impacient, America really exaggerated his attitude creating the aptly named: 90's 'tude, Sonic was loud mouthed, snarky, very energetic, used a lot of slang, and he was in 90's stardards "way past cool". When writer Shiro Maekawa came on board, him, not satisfied with Classic Sonic, got inspired by the american cartoons and created a more unified Sonic, he was still japanese Sonic but he had more of the attitude American Sonic was known for, this version appealed to a lot more people for his cool factor and how he bounces off other characters.
    IDW/Frontiers Sonic
    After his run at Archie ended, Ian Flynn started his run at IDW, taking place in the Game world, with a new Sonic. Having fought evil for 30 years gave Sonic a newfound maturity, he's a lot more heroic in the american sense, his attitude has been toned down, and he's now giving life advice to people. This Sonic has lost a lot of his flaws, making him sort of a "perfect hero". He still has the same goal: give people a chance at freedom. And he's still motivated by that goal to the end. The world around him challenges his views by putting him in situations where there's not a clear right anwser, and yet Sonic keeps doing what he thinks is right rather than what other people would consider the right choice in those same scenarios. This version of Sonic has been heavily criticized, but it was actually approved by Takashi Iizuka himself:"Ian has been working as a comic writer for a long time, so I was very familiar with his work, but after reading the IDW comics, I was even more impressed with his talent,".
    Ultimately i think this is a good version of Sonic, but he still has a lot of room for improvement.

      Gonna have to clarify i am not really an idw Sonic fan, i am one of the only people who neither hates nor loves IDW, i'm more of an Archie and Fleetway kinda person myself. So in this analysis i tried staying as unbiased and fair as possible, i don't really like how they softened Sonic out, but i can also appreciate the ideas they were going for and the writing is also pretty solid, Ian Flynn is a very experienced writer and i'm glad they brought him to write the games. Anyways my favorite version of game Sonic is Maekawa Sonic, since SA2 is my favorite Sonic story from the games, and i really like the energy he has, always bringing a smile to my face, also he's really cool. My ranking would be:
      Maekawa Sonic
      Classic Sonic
      IDW/Frontiers Sonic.
      That's about it.

      I'm also working on an analisys of every version of American Sonic, that's where Sonic's personality really changes with each version.
      Also what exactly do you disagree, if it's about IDW Sonic, i already knew people wouldn't agree to that, but i think IDW Sonic is the most overhated version of Sonic EVER, like the amount of people calling this the worst Sonic is insane to me, trust me, if you think THAT is the worst version of Sonic, you've seen NOTHING!

    You know, when people discover THE true Sonic (and get frustrated that we didn't get that Sonic because of mistranslation and the fact SEGA and Sonic Team stopped with the JP Sonic in 2010 and get frustrated at the fact a lot of people don't know what True Sonic is) people end up dismissing or even outright reject any other (American) Sonic because it's not Sonic.
    Using Batman as an example of the core characters was smart. At the core Batman is a pacifist. (In a minimal sense. In a sense he doesn't kill and doesn't use guns) However, I imagine that people who are more into the dark version of Batman like Batman the Animated Series, Dark Knight trilogy, and Arkham series may not like lighthearted and more comedic Batman because that may not be their Batman. Just saying. I could be wrong.
    Now I wanna talk about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) starting with the original Mirage TMNT comic. I won't get too much in detail but I will say at the core Turtles and Splinter were never discovered on the surface, (except for some people) they fight the Foot Clan, and it has some pretty dark stories. (Some people say it's ridiculously dark)
    The 1987 cartoon was nothing like Mirage TMNT. I will say they got the characters right. (Except for Raph who wasn't a hothead in this show) Though the turtles we already out of the shadows, they aren't really ninjas, (Unlike Mirage TMNT) the bad guys most of the time are Shredder, Bebop, and Rocksteady with not much of the army, and it's a lighthearted show for kids. And yet it's an iconic show as many people grew up watching this show. I'd say this show got lucky as most of the people who watched 87 cartoon haven't read Mirage TMNT.
    The 2003 series was more faithful to the original. I'd even say that many original Mirage TMNT stories were adapted in the 2003 show in seasons 1-3 while making the original characters and also keeping it kid-friendly. (most of the time)
    I would describe the 2012 TMNT as a middle ground between the 1987 and 2003 shows. I mean it takes some elements and characters from those shows while also making their own original stuff. Compared to the 2003 series, the 2012 is the same but different.
    And now the Rise of TMNT. I can say I understand why people didn't like it at first. I mean the turtles and Splinter are nothing like they were in previous shows. Thought later on they warmed up to it and said it's a pretty decent show when they judged it as it is and not for what it is not.
    You know, when people discover the original version or the best/the most right version, (or both) people will start to dismiss or even outright reject the other version because it's not it. Or they say it's not it because it's missing the key component that makes it what it is. Even though the other versions may have some substance behind it. (if it does have it)
    While Pariah695 does dismiss or even rejects the American Sonic because that's not Sonic, he does say that we shouldn't judge for what it is not and should judge for what it is. Just saying.

      I definitely agree! Since i consumed all kinds of Sonic media, i gained an appreciation for every version of Sonic.
      Like Satam and AOSTH had an hyperactive and rebellious Sonic that had a bit of an ego, but also a heart of gold. Archie expanded on that while also combining him with game Sonic.
      STC had Sonic be a jerk that uses a tough attitude to hide his low self esteem.
      Even IDW, who has a more mature Sonic who loves freedom and is just trying to share his freedom with everyone else. All those versions are true to some aspects of Sonic but have their own unique identity that makes them unique. And i love all of them, at their core they are all Sonic.

Ian hates Sonic team sonic and wants it to be more like Archie. But Archie Sonic was a bitchy hero. Game Sonic is a guy who loves adventure. Game Amy should be a girly girl with an extreme love for Sonic and childish dreams for the future. Not some magical girl boss who is embarrassed by her crush. Recent Shadow Generations discourse about the Vs Sonic cutscene has points that say Sonic is meant to be a bit of an asshole (especially in regards to others' pov) who "dances on the face of the enemy" or smth like that, might be misremembering
    Now, I haven't finished the video, so idk how that matches with the JP version, but I really don't know how I feel about that aspect of his. Like, I get it, the likes of Knuckles, Shadow and Eggman can def see him as a nonstop blabbering jerk, but in my opinion, that should ONLY be how they see him _occasionally_ when he's pruposefully trying to banter with them, and just annoy Eggman. But Sonic actually being a jerk shouldn't be a core trait unless it's in moments _he's_ annoyed by the other character, like how he rolls his eyes to Tails when they land in the Egg Carrier (I dislike that scene only because I myself get scolded a lot for asking/pointing out "dumb shit" so seeing he go through that hits a tad personally), or when he scolds Marine for... whatever she did.
    Point is, Sonic, for me, should be cool, with an edge compared to Mario, and who likes to banter, but he shouldn't be a jerk for it.
    Imagine if Chip wasn't like he was. Imagine he's not "annoying" and doesn't act like Scrappy-Doo or like a "loud naive dummy".
    Now, recall to all the slapstick where he flicks Chip off or shoves him aside cuz he just cannot simmer down. Taking that off of Chip, Sonic would just be being a jerk to him for no reason.
    ...idk what my original point even is anymore, been typing for a long time, but just saying. People like asshole characters but Sonic shouldn't be like that just because he was supposed to be cooler than Mario.
    And from the JP cutscenes of some of the games like Adventure, Colors and Lost World, I feel like he mostly doesn't have that, like how he playfully calls out Knuckles for being tricked instead of being annoyed by it, or how he compliments Tails in Colors instead of talking him down for not being in the action.

      @@ZachMiller-ox1fn Yes for a general idea as of the world we live in yes. When I say that anyone can enjoy their interpretations and it’s ok they exist I say this as a person who knows where we are as a franchise and accept we already have them and people are allowed to like them.
      But I think I said this in my video, personally I would rather there be only one Sonic to stop this confusion and have this debate that Sonic was never consistent gone. Because I personally would want that but that isn’t our reality. I’d rather have consistency if we’re trying to do branding and lore or whatever.
      Where we are now though I’m fine with there being multiple interpretations but I want to see the Sonic Sega intended to have to be the main Sonic. And the others as their own even if I don’t like them.

      I personally like how Ian Flynn writes Sonic, but there are some small differences with him and japanese Sonic that can bother some people who prefer that version of the character.
      For one, his ego, in Archie Sonic, Sonic's ego gave him an interesting extra layer that added more depth to the character. In IDW, however, since it's supposed to be the same Sonic from the games, many people don't like that.
      Another thing is the way the dialogue is written, it's not bad but it's heavily inspired by jaleel white Sonic, so people who liked the 90's cartoons enjoy this version of the character while japanese Sonic purists really want those versions of Sonic to stay separate.
      One last thing, and this is IDW exclusive, so no Archie, Sonic is kind of a goody two shoes. One thing people like about Sonic is that Sonic can be kind of rude, impacient, and just overall doesn't care about what other people think, this Sonic retains some of that, but he can get preachy at times, where old Sonic would naturally affect people in positive ways by just being himself, IDW Sonic makes active attempts to redeem almost any villain he faces. This makes Sonic feel not as carefree and full of attitude as he used to be, and more like, as a person put it: a snarky optimus prime. This is not a thing in Archie, however, which is one of the reasons i personally enjoy it more, you can have your own opinion however, if you enjoy IDW, that's great, if you don't, that's also great, for me Archie Sonic is absolutely amazing, and many people also feel that way about IDW, so i hope with this comment you can have a more clear understanding of thing!
      And it's spelled Ian Flynn by the way.

    Sonic is not and never has been an introvert, not in Japan and not in America. Fukurou-Hoseki was wrong and she has issues with taking criticism like her being hypocritical about HER own definition of an introvert. Fukorou-Hoseki states that introverts are composed and don't show emotions like anger, while stating that Knuckles is an introvert, when he's usually openly aggressive and reactive, so which is it?. She did not look at the introvert/extrovert spectrum wholistically neither and did she mention his cognitive behaviour. Sonic is a cognitively extroverted person. You see, cognitive extroversion relies on external/"real" world and Sonic obviously loves it and revels in it, that is the core of his character, so that's why he's fundamentally a cognitive extrovert (Also he's a great positive example of the Jungian Rebel archetype). I could explain to you jungian functions as well and that Sonic is a ES/Extroverted Sensation type, but that would be too much effort for me to bother, unless you want to hear more about it. Showing emotions can be an extroverted trait, but doesn't have to be and you don't need to be a narcissistic extrovert to not be expressive with them. Extroverts can also struggle with taking compliements, that is more about emotional experience and maturity of someone, not them being an extrovert. Not to mention "the long time no see" sentence he says is almost a catchphrase throught the whole franchise, pretty much every main character says it, does that make everyone an introvert? I also forgot to mention earlier that Sonic X is not canon, so it has little importance to game Sonic as a character.
    While trying to find Hoseki's original video I found this one that debunks that idea, ruclips.net/video/H1KQ5-3_G1k/видео.html. But my insight on his cognitive behaviour was strictly mine so if you want to argue about it, direct the questions to me

    • @igirjei3717
      @igirjei3717 6 месяцев назад +2

      I would argue that, just because extroverts can have personality traits that are similar to introverts, that doesn't mean sonic can't be an introvert. Sonic's largely self interested and often doesn't go out to do things other characters do (like tails surfing in the OVA, and the human characters going on a picnic (in the first episode that eggman tricks knuckles) in sonic X)
      Also, sonic X might not be canon, but it does use accurate characterizations of a decent amount of the characters, including but not limited to sonic
      I think sonic being an ES type checks out, but from what I understand about the character, he's very much willing to sit down and relax, to the point that, if he's not an introvert, one could forgive me for believing otherwise
      And lastly, knux is definitely an introvert. Even if he outwardly expresses anger, he's been described as shy around girls, he's naive due to a somewhat lacking social life, the dude sits in once place every time we see him (when applicable, ofc), and in X, knux often breaks off from the crowd to do his own thing

    • @Den3zo
      @Den3zo 4 месяца назад +3

      @@igirjei3717 Sonic is a very strong willed individual if he says he doesn't feel like doing an activty, there's not much you can do from breaking his will, which that itself is already describing an ES type. Also Sonic is/should be a pretty chill extrovert, he's not over the top like Deadpool, just because Sonic is taking a break from typical extroverted activities, doesn't mean he's not an extrovert. Tbh he's like 60% extroverted, but that doesn't change he is a cognitive extrovert, there is no spectrum in cognitive extroversion, you're either extroverted or introverted.
      Knuckles, Shadow, Blaze, Tails and Espio are undisputed introverts. I was pointing out hypocrisy of Fukurou-Hoseki's definition of an introvert. Espio is an Introverted Thinking type, same as Tails though he's IT(N) or an INTP in MBTI.

    I get where you're coming from, im a Spider-Man fanand if you've seen how he has been portrayed in movies and cartoons very few people actually understand that character, even the comics right now are having trouble with that but i think this video lacks alot of nuance when it comes to how sega has handled things internally and who is really to blame for the contradictory portrayal.
    Also as an American sonic fan who has consumed American sonic media, as far as I've seen he has been portrayed the way you say he is in JP, the actual differences are extremely miniscule and alot of the things you say he isn't you then contradict yourself by saying and showing how he is.
    The quality of the games themselves and how they are presented is the actual issue with sonic, not the storytelling nor sonics portrayal.

    • @Kim_Gone_Mad
      @Kim_Gone_Mad 12 дней назад +1

      I'd also argue the idea of 'Sonic being a ladies' man' isn't even really a thing in early western canon or SatAM. That moreso comes from Archie creating manufactured romantic drama. Sonic gets easily flustered and shy around Sally, hiding behind humor and brushing things off rather than engaging in overt romanticism and can get shy around her. The only reason SatAM Sonic is even as comfortable around sally as he is-- is because they've been childhood friends for the vast majority of their lives together. I don't think early western sonic really misunderstood the core of his character in any meaningful way.

    • @Kim_Gone_Mad
      @Kim_Gone_Mad 12 дней назад +1

      Arguably that's more a creation of Yuji Naka wanting Sonic to have a 'human girlfriend' than anything which SatAM and the American writers went through painstakingly long lengths to make fit better within Sonic's defined world.
      Also the idea that Japanese Sonic doesn't save animals is absurd and contradicts the gameplay footage he has on screen. The insinuation that saving animals is antithetical to Sonic, or even roboticization (which has been alluded to, shown, referenced, or outright stated in numerous Japanese produced or overseen media) is a bit outright disingenous.
