From a tourist point of view, Australia beats Finland for having such large scale of attractions to visit. So many huge cities, rain forests, beaches etc.
Finland does have the lapland, winter and a lot of opportunities to do some winter sport activities everywhere in Finland!! You dont get to do those things in Australia.
The real answer is that you have to experience both sides personally and then choose wich one is better for you!
I think seasons are the best thing about Finnish weather and nature. You get so many different weathers and the nature changes a lot during a year, I can't imagine what it's like to live in country where there's summer all the time. Also I think it's really cool how the amount of sunlight changes too, it never gets boring :D

@Milan Toncic Well it also depends on where you live and the years are also very different to each other. And now because of the climate change winters have become warmer and wetter and that's very sad... But the amount of sunlight is always the same, winters are dark, but you will get all the missing light in summertime. It's not darker in Finland than in any other place in the world, it's just not as equally divided as it is when you're closer to the equator.
As a Finn, I hate hot seasons. Australia would be too hot. Even last summer here was a little bit too warm for me.
There was a few really hot days in Finland last summer. It made it nice to go swimming though!

As having lived in Australia for 17 years, I'd say infrastructure wise, Australia is years advanced, i.e banking, financial, transport, stronger economy, but then it is 4x bigger than Finland.
What I love about Finland......Its Finland lol. I love the cooler months, although it's hard to get use to the darkness. Cost of living is CHEAP!
Sauna, it's laid back, it's geared to winter. Oh and THE TRAVEL!!! Definitely reminds me more of my home country New Zealand. Overall both have the positives and negatives but we live here in Finland, so in a way....we're all pro Finland 🤗
If it's cold or rainy or windy or snowy, it's all about clothing and attitude. When it's freaking hot all year long, there's nothing else to do tham to stay indoors under air condition. Too warm is not good for human body. 4 seasons beats 1. >:)
I love both. I feel at home in both. I definitely prefer the nature in Finland though - how can you beat going to Sauna on the lake?
I used to live in Australia 20 years and loved it. Definetly the weather is much better there.Actually I love both countries.
Really great to watch this video. I was born in Australia, but my mum was born in Finland and has recently returned which has got me thinking about the differences between the two. As I'm looking at moving there, I loved seeing an Australian give their opinions about the differences, much more applicable than a British or American person giving the differences as we have quite a different lifestyle.

To add about nature, there’s a huge difference between how each country respect and protect their nature
It all depends on the person's perspective and how they see the world that surrounds them.if you're a person that truly appreciate the beauty of nature like me, Finland wins.
Well, my friends in Melbourne tell me they always shake their boots before putting them on and that in their garden they have spiders that can kill a person. We basically have just mosquitoes as to hostile insect life... And it does sound awfully hot and fiery, literally. The accent is crazily funny and the relaxed attitude to life are definite plusses though. And I bet you don't have 4hr long days either - or 5 week long nights should you live in Northern Lapland. So, I guess a wash :)
I have been in Australia for a short period of time in early 90's as a finn. I think AU is good climate and big burgers country. If I had a chance I would well live in AU at least some time.
I would probably die in Australia. I have so many allergies towards different kinds of trees and flowers. In summer here in Finland, I have strong medication and I still sneeze and almost suffocate because of the pollen. I am so glad every time autumn comes. In a country, where it is always summer, would be hell for me.
What kind of pollens in Australia are you allergic to? I have pretty bad allergy to the birch pollen here in Finland.

I lived in Australia,Melbourne for 2years. And lives in Finland now. I like Australia more and still miss it lots . I hope can live half in Australia and half in Finland in the future. :D

Nooooo, you don't talk to strangers. I hate when I travel and people come talk to me and i have to respond. Finns truly hate small talk. We like the nature + peace and quiet.

As a Swede I really hate this 2 m social distancing during the pandemic, I want to go back to the 4 m that I'm used too
I lived in Australia for ten years and currently eleven years in Finland (with many others in the UK), so I have a pretty informed opinion (though it's still personal, obviously). Like your assessment, I really wouldn't want to choose one over the other in the categories you covered. If you brought politics, education, and welfare state into it, the scales may start tipping... BTW, the UK doesn't even come close to competing.

As an Australian living in Finland now for 3 years, I think you guys covered almost everything quite well and I agree with most of the stuff you talked about. However, about weather I would not give Australia 1 full point. I agree with Anni that having seasons here in Finland is really a significant advantage. Maybe half a point to each for weather. I love both countries though.
yeah fair enough. After just experiencing my first full summer I can definitely appreciate the full variety of seasons. I wouldn't mind summer being a bit longer though, not ready for the cold yet! 😂

I'm gonna need an educated and more thorough comparison now. I think there are more aspects to these things that could make it more interesting. Like how's the Australian social security and health care? Crime rates? Environmental impact? Innovation? Metal bands? Eurovision wins?
Thanks for those topic suggestions! It would be good to look at it from a more serious perspective too if people are thinking which place is better to live.

Social security, corruption index, safety index, healthcare all incredibly high in both countries, some statistics (most) show Australia is a little ahead, however others not. They are comparable.
* Global Peace Index, Australia ranks 13, Finland 14th.
* Corruption Perception Index, Australia ranks a small bit lower than Finland.
* Australia has a lower "intentional homicide rate" 0.7 Australia vs 1.20 in Finland.
Environmental impact Finland wins hands down!
Both very innovative countries, Australia has some incredible pioneers in the research field, but again Finland has a great variety of innovation in a range of areas. Comparable, maybe Finland ahead just a little.

TEMPERATURE in Finland is better, but the weather overall all year round, on average, sucks. Too much rain, and rates of depression and alcohol dependence considerably higher too.
Australia may be yucky hot, but we get sun all year round and if you don't like it, just try another city.

There is no perfect country in the world. It's subjective what you like or what you don't like of the culture and of the people. As I don't live in Finland I can't really judge it. But I think there are objective criteria you can compare. Finland belongs according to international studies to the 6 best countries in the world to live. These are some of the objective criteria:
- Finland is a very secure country. You don't have to be afraid to be shot also not in the night. Ok I think in Australia it's about the same.
- Finland is well known for social security and the social welfare. It looks that in Finland the government tries to look well for their citizens. One example is for example the famous Finnish baby box for women becoming mother. I also like it how they solved the problem of the homelessness in Helsinki for example. This is quite unique in the world I think. As far I know the health care system is paid to 90% by the taxes. Finnish people pay only little amounts in hospitals or for health treatments compared to Switzerland for example. In Finland you don't have to pay monthly premium for the health insurance like in Switzerland. As rich people pay more taxes they contribute automatically more to the health care system. In my opinion it's fairer.
- Finns take care of the nature and they have a pure nature, very good potable water etc. Ok I don't know how it's in Australia.
- Finland was elected 4 or 5 times in a row to be the happiest country in the world. There must be a reason for that.
- Finns are among the most honest people in the world, at least according to many people's experience with Finns.
Of course some people don't like the winters, the cold in winter, the early sunset in autumn, may be there are people who don't like the Finnish culture and the the way of living of the Finns. But these are subjective criteria and concerning the cold and winter, the early sunset in autumn and winter, it is given by the geographical position of the country. Nobody can change it people who move to Finland just has to accept it and deal with it. But they know it before the move there.
Personally Australia would be too hot for me and I would miss the snow and winter. But as I said this is subjective other people may like it. Though when it's winter in Australia it can snow there too, but I thinks it's rather exceptional.

And Finland has better swamps, more of them and more types of them as we have 9 types of swamps here and Australia has like maybe one or half ... Clear point for Finland!

I would've guessed your wife's a blond, ginger never crossed my mind . She talks almost with an aussie accent too, wow. Haven't been to Australia but with general knowledge I would say that Australia wins every category except perhaps standard of living. The houses are probably better built due to seasonal changes and because we spend so much time indoors. It could be a tie if we would count education and different art forms to culture, such as music. You should've added fifth category so we could've settled this but in my books Australia might slightly win, at least thinking about this in February. Although it's far away from rest of the world but Finland is on the corner of Europe as well.

We'll have to do another one with some different categories to find a winner, arts and education is a good idea.

When You get used to the Food / Weather / Language - You start seeing Your " Youth " - with Different Eyes ! It just TAKES TIME ! - to see all the colors of The Rainbow !

Hobbies and stuff to do .....I'm not sure where you guys lived in Australia but Sydney or Melbourne absolutely beats Helsinki on that front hands down, it's not even debatable.....I've lived in Helsinki and Melb/Sydney ....I think Australia wins this lol....I'll also add Australia consistently outranks Finland on the Human Development index ... a well regarded quality of life measure

For me personally, I would have given the nature point to Australia. I mean come on, Finland just has so monotonous nature everywhere, whereas Australia has all the climates except the snow ofcourse. Really hilarious how strongly your wife defended Finland XD. But need to be realistic here LOL.

Finland has monotonously good nature everywhere. Australia is huge, but not everywhere green at all.
Actually Australia has snow fields for skiing in winter , in southern New South Wales and Victoria, Tasmania also.

Sports I great, I play floorball like 5 times a week, badminton sometimes etc. so we have opportunities. Havent been to Australia tho so can't say what they have. I know they have floorball in some cities there too. Would be very nice and cool to go and play there with the people...only really played with finnish people.

Nice, yeah it's great how many sports halls are in Finland. I've only played floorball once, I'm pretty uncoordinated at it haha. Field hockey is really popular in Australia though which I guess is a little bit similar

It was so funny firsr time I saw Aussie national team play floorball, they were all playing right side, hitting ball field hockey styke...was odd but interesting to see

Edit, never been to Australia but I would absolutely love to.. I also hear it is the one country where any and everything in nature tries to kill you.. worst in Finland is a bear, wolf or moose protecting her young ones.. and one poisonous snake, but not even that one is lethal.

Australia is fantastic! I also love alot of places like thailand etz,. But the thing is I always enjoy landing at home in scandivania. Its just the calmness and peace of mind that dont exist in other contries. SWE,FIN,NOR,DEN is special and I dont think I can trade it for better wheather or anything else in the long run!

Why is Weather 1 of the points? countries cant change the weather and Finns are used to Finnish weather and vice versa, i think +15C is too much...
Instead you could have said Location (still cant be changed) but more important than weather, but that would mean Finland gets an easy win as Australia is in the middle of an Ocean and Finland is in Northern Europe and has the most sought after passport.

Weather clearly gets minus point for Australia, too hot, too bright and shit... :P If I want weather like Australia has, I go to sauna... +15 Celcius is max temperature for place that isn't sauna or room for wee baby and that is fact!
I wonder if there would be poll about were Finns would like to live if not in Finland. There is quite a lot Finns who have imigrated to Australia. Canada has been popular in past but propably because climate is same/familiar. USA was also polular 100 years ago specially in Minnesota area. And in the eighties some old people liked to retire to Florida. Sweden has been easy country to settle and it was popular in the seventies and eighties. But in current world, USA is not safe place anymore to have good living standards compared to Finland. Canada's climate is too much same as here and Sweden is just too similar and has its own issues and problems. I think Australia could be quite high with Spain if we forget those who like Thailand because of sex tourism.
Australia is also a lot more affluent than Spain....it's arguably the wealthiest warm country.
In Finland We have Two Million SAUNAS ! One at The Lake / One at The Sea Islas ! How is The Down Under SAUNA SITUATION ?
We don't have that many saunas in Australia unfortunately, they are often only in hotels and swimming halls. The weather is usually warm enough to not need them haha

Well. It is very warm and nice in Australia. But they have 2500 people dying of melanoma every year. In relative tems 1/50 000 people in Finland dies of melanoma and 1/10 000 of Australians die of melanoma every year. So it is 5 times more likely to live a skincancer free life in a cold and dark shitty place that I call my homeland Finland. TORILLA TAVATAAN🇫🇮

You must consider Australia is an ancient country .. and in maps you go through many Aboriginal countries in one state of Australia .. What you see on maps is not how Aboriginal people see Australia - please look up Aboriginal tribes to see how our maps look more real to people who want to visit Australia. Cairns is considered a country town .. we have cities that do not think same as country towns ( which is same in Finland right ? ) eg Carins is not Melbourne , Sydney, Brisbane - nor are any of them the same.. we have many countries and have big land here .. Australia is much bigger than people think - you could visit small part of Australia yet get no idea of what whole land is like .. I have spent my whole life traveling Australia and although I have visited many places .. spent time in several states , . I still not have travelled or experienced Australia in all its beauty .. I am sure you understand those who read this .. even seasons can change a town or city, I think the big thing about Australia and finland is people - we both love the country and we both very proud of the land we live on .. keep that in mind and am sure you will have a great time !! happy travelling !! :) :)

im sorry but i have to comment at 12:23 is the most stupid comment i ever heard... weather helps in australia to practice more hobbies etc.... i mean come on, winter and snow open up WAY more hobbies and opportunities and if you want to do inside sports you do that crap inside. How can australians do skiing, ice hockey, skating, winter rally... or anything snow related that got insane ammount of opportunities.. this is so small minded comment without understanding the real opportunity of weathers more then just summer.
