  • Starting in Doyle, California, we watch as Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 makes its entrance into Northern California, as it arrives into the small town for an added service stop!
Shortly after arriving, we proceeded to sit for roughly four hours before any sign of UP 4014 was shown. After overhearing dispatch confirming a service stop in Doyle, many moved positions to see the locomotive up close in town, before heading back! We were one of the many who witnessed the crowd grow beside UP 4014, in the small town of Doyle!
Shortly after taking the time to view the locomotive, we head back to our original position off US 395, and prepare to capture the train race west through the control point at West Doyle!
After spotting large plumes of black smoke rise out of the town, we knew that 4014 was back on the move!
Continuing the chase Westbound, we reach Mile Post 355.6, at South Constantia Road, where we once again see a crowd gathered at the crossing to watch UP 4014 race towards Portola. After a brief minute of waiting, 4014 rolled through and the chase to Chilcoot was on!
Chilcoot was the busiest of all the places. Upon arrival, there was barely any room left in the photo line of photographers! The group compacted down, and made room for another group of people who arrived later. Shortly, we spotted a headlight exiting the tunnel, and more smoke rise in the distance. After racing past the large crowd, everyone jumped back in their vehicles and started racing across the valley for Portola!
Upon arriving in Portola, we only about a minute to spare before UP 4014 rounded the curve, and cleared through the East Portola signals!

The cars are all empty, they are just running with them for the extra train breaks.
