This song was a great template for so much of what Lyle Lovett went on to create himself. Funny lyrics and dreamy sliding chords. A modern version of Western Swing.
I only discovered this man because I was trying to find out who wrote the song I hate the most: Muskrat Love. Captain and Tennille tortured me with it and I thought America's version was horrible too. I was shocked to find out that when I heard the original that somehow I really liked it. Then I heard Willis Alan Ramsey sing Angel Eyes. WOW. Sad he is not a household name.
Wow, great video. Lyle Lovett recorded this song on an excellent 2 CD collection of songs written by other great songwriters (Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Frmholtz, to mention a few). All songs sung by Lyle. Buy it. It's named "Step Inside This House" after the great introspectively penned song by Guy Clark.
What a voice! Sounds like what they must have meant when they talked about "smooth as Tennessee Whiskey." Wow. Slides me into dreams - day and night. Love it!
It’s the other way around. Became aware of him in the early 70s. He’s my favorite. Saw Lyle in an Austin bar in the early 80s. Tennis shoes tapping on the mic. Quiet. I nearly spit out my drink. He sounded just like Willis Alan. Needless to say, I moved to a table right close to the little stage. Been following Lyle sine.
rd264 some kind of excellent treble, huh - way fun tune - if you're gonna get your heart broke, you can cry in your beer or, maybe have some fun with it, eh.
Willis is amazing! His self titled album is probably one of the best all around albums ever. Been a fan ever since the 1st time I heard him sing.

I still love and listen to this awesome singer songwriter. 2020🌹
I'm with you Martha, but in 2021 🎶
As Berry Gordy once said millions of times on his record label "It's what's in the grooves, that counts"
Detroiter here. Living in Texas now. It’s all in the groove. Love your comment, brother.
can this guy write stories - and wrap em in blues, country or pop - a lyric genuis - what a stud.

real acoustic americana - relaxed, innovative and fun to hear repeatedly. The boys in the band are having a time, in the groove - good stuff, Willis.

Willis's guitar is a D18, maybe a D21, it has dark binding.

The Ballad of Spider John is my favorite.
Interesting how much Ramsey's voice sounds here like his fellow player Lyle Lovett's.
