My great uncle went through Ellis Island. He was from Italy. He planned to send for my grandmother after living in New York for a year, but he died in the first winter he was there. Instead, my grandmother moved from Italy to the UK and consequently here I am (born in the UK). Crazy to think that had he survived, I could have been American.

Just had a look on Google Tim and found this.
Underneath the streets of Manhattan, there are more than 100 miles of service pipes bringing steam to about 1,800 buildings.
Steam may seem like a primitive source of energy (think of steamboats and steam engines- we don't see those anymore).
But when New York's first power plant opened in 1882, steam from clean water greatly reduced the amount of soot created by individual coal-burning furnaces which were the primary source of heat at the time.

Municipally & utility provided steam heating is very common in most urban American cities; it is a byproduct of the generation of electricity (an early green-tech to recapture the lost heat for steam).

In 1982, I went to NYC with my family. I was obsessed with trees and wanted to locate a sweetgum in Central Park. I couldn't find one. Eighteen years later, I took my wife to NY from Boston (where I'm from) via Amtrack, and as we're strolling through CP, I see the tree I had been looking for. It was a happy personal moment.
I live in London now and I see sweetgum trees everywhere, LOL.

I really enjoy Tim's "travelogues." I imagine that since he's from the UK, he is refreshingly polite, as he thanks just about everyone who serves him, from, in this video, the hot chocolate vender to the pizza vender.
He does this in all his videos. This, I suppose, is all well and good. But what is NOT well and good, is I've never seen anyone, from store vendors to hotel clerks to hotel employees, THANK TIM for his business.
Don't those people know that without PAYING CUSTOMERS, like Tim, those people wouldn't have their jobs? I would not bet on it.
Still, I like to see Tim instill some politeness and gratitude on these people by saying something like, "Oh, (referring to the person's name on the name plate), you forgot to thank me."
The person may apologize and profusely thank Tim. But if the employee looks puzzled, Tim should exlain that since he is a customer the employee should appreciate his business and thank him for it. If the employee still looks puzzled, he could remind the employee that without paying customers like him, the employee will soon be out of a job. The employee may see it his way, and thank Tim not only for his business, but for the new found lesson Tim taught him.
Should the employee, however, remain obtuse, or even refuse to thank Tim, I suggest Tim ask for the employee's manager.
The manager will tell Tim that he will address the employee, and then profusely apilogize and thank Tim for his business and for bringing up his concern. And who knows, the manager may offer a complimentary something, or even comp his meal or room.😀👍
Let's make this world a more civil and polite one. Tim, and anyone else who profusely thank ungrateful service or product providers could greatly help when they stop doing this and, instead, demand to be thanked for the business they provide.
    Thanks for reading.

The reason for the steam vents is that the city provides heat to many of the buildings (at a cost), and that eliminates the need for each building to have its own heating plant. This method of heating frees the buildings from having the need to have routine fuel deliveries and keeps the power plant in an industrial area where it would not affect the local air quality. (All of the cars in NYC do enough of that) BTW. Excellent videos Tim. Also, my grandfather landed at Ellis Island from Ukraine at the turn of the century. "Slava Ukraini!"

  • @0tispunkm3y3r

The steamy vents.... its from the power station. They send steam down under the streets and it is used to heat/cool buildings. It's a district heating system that has been working since the 1880s and is one of the largest (naturally) if not THE largest such system in the world.
The Art Deco details on display at the Empire State are absolutely sublime.
Not sure it's still a thing, but a cheap way to see the Statue is to get the Staten Island ferry (with all the commuters) and simply go round the turnstiles and get back on to come back. You'll go past it and get a good view. And I am sure it was free. At least it was when I did it.

......but for those who do go; my suggestion. Take Roosevelt Island aerial tramway (cable car) to Roosevelt Island, giving you unique street and river views. Walk around the tranquil island (30 minutes) giving you amazing city views. Take the water taxi ($5) to Battery Park. Head to the free Staten Island Ferry taking you past the Statue of Liberty to New Jersey. Board the water taxi back to Mid Town. Plenty to see at each stop. It is a round trip. Staggering views on the water and dirt cheap.

I’ve been lucky enough to visit New York many times, and lived in London for over a decade. I’d take New York in a heartbeat.
However, to fully get the complete NYC experience, I would suggest the following.
Firstly, stay in another borough than Manhattan. Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and even Staten Island are all easy to access all the touristy bits in Manhattan, plus you get to experience all the unique qualities each borough has to give. Along with experiencing how the locals live/eat/travel.
Secondly, always take the subway and walk everywhere. I learnt after my first trip, that you miss out on so much when on guided tours and buses. Walking is vital. There’s so much to see when just strolling around. Plus, you’ll recognise so much from film/tv that you might of missed otherwise.
Thirdly, to get the most out of your time in the huge city. Really plan your days out before you go. There are plenty of sights that are situated near each other. Do them all in one day, then plan to visit another area the next.
Fourthly avoid tourist traps. Especially food related. For example juniors cheesecakes. They’re nice but there’s plenty of better places, that will be cheaper and better. Same with the likes of Katz deli. Very nice, but it’s so expensive, and you’re herded in and out like cattle. There are plenty of quality delis around the city. Sadly my favourite
Eisenburgs (near the flat iron building) has been closed since Covid. But they did the best Reuben’s in NYC for me. Just do a bit of research.
Lastly, more a personal one. If you’ve never driven in the US before, don’t start in NYC. We hired a car for our honeymoon to take us from NYC to Vegas, and picked the car up from Battery park Manhattan. I drove it back to our digs in Brooklyn. But the signage in NYC is impossible. I kept missing the turnoff, and we ended up going backwards and forwards over the Brooklyn Bridge 3 times!
Driving to Coney Island wasn’t so bad though, so once you’re used to the signs/roads it’s fine. It was the most stressful hour of my life getting from Manhattan to Brooklyn though!

Wonderful video Tim!!! Really captured the vibe of NYC! The Radio City Music Hall Christmas show is a tradition and a must see if you can get tickets. I also like that after a Broadway show if you go to the stage door you can see the cast exiting and they'll speak with you and sign your programme. A hot dog at Coney Island when it is all to yourself - so jealous!

Great video Tim, my favourite of all yours so far! Used to be an NYC city break specialist at the turn of the millenium and it's really interesting to see some of the new attractions and upgrades to the Empire State, Statue of Liberty etc. The cycle lanes look ideal for getting around. Hope you post more adventures from the Big Apple soon.

We were there in the 70s. Wow what a difference from way back then your video brought back so many wonderful memories when my self and my partner were young. We saw Dianna Ross at Radio City Music Hall and visited all the sights in your video. We also went up the old World Trade Centre. Bitter sweet memories. Thanks for a great video. Would love to go back but regrettably long haul is so difficult for us now.

Most of us Americans would tell you the same thing; it's just a bigger, dirtier, higher-crime city in the States and it doesn't really have anything that unique. Everything NY has is found everywhere else, and most other places in the US have it better (and WAY cheaper). Only New Yorkers think that NY is the center of the world.

The thing to know about grits is that you need to add lots of salt and butter. Cheese is also a good add-in. It has no flavor on its own. Most places don’t add those things to it bc everyone prefers it differently. Don’t listen to anyone who suggests putting sugar in it.

Super great video of NYC Tim. Have visited many times over the past few years and was in the city two weeks after 911. Quite a surreal experience to stand in Lower Manhattan so soon after the tragic events I can tell you. Didn’t like that trippy experience on the glass tower, not for me. However I agree with you Central Park, it’s massive. I went up The Empire State Building but cannot remember those attractions inside they must be new. Grand Central Station is indeed amazing. I never got to Statin Island as I had time constraints and was travelling next day on Amtrak to Chicago. Great fabulous city though. Great video too.

I absolutely loved this vlog Tim. Ever since I was a child watching home alone two i’ve wanted to go to NYC. Unfortunately I don’t have the funds to get there so will live it through your eyes. This was a fab vlog and you covered a lot. I don’t know how you fit it all in. Did you sleep? Are they your hollister shorts that went missing that made an appearance at Coney Island? 😂. Thanks though Tim it was a real treat for me. Can’t wait to see the plaza although I think reading between the lines it may be a bit of a disappointment.
