    I'm so glad for this advice. I originally was going to get one ferret but had done the research and decided to get a pair. Seeing that the number 1 toy was a companion makes me feel so much better about getting two, despite my mom thinking it was a crazy idea. I'm a renter but I'm determined to make my home ferret-proof and have the ways to do so. I'm so excited to get my first ferrets. (Planning on two males, naming them Rutt and Tuke.)

    lovely video and totally agree. we recently adopted 4 ferrets who were all surrendered together. the shelter said we could just adopt 2, but after meeting them we couldn’t imagine separating them and I’m SO glad we didn’t. it makes me so sad to think about them being apart now after seeing how much they love each other.

    I had a T-max sock on a string and my ferret of 9 yrs chewed on it, got it stuck in his teeth and choked to death. You can't be careful enough with toys.
    Also my ferret crushes ping pong balls and ate so much rice from the rice bin that she was pooping out rice balls. Quickly removed both as unsafe toys. Ping pong balls okay with supervision

    Towels are also good. My youngest girl, Sugar, took a hand towel from the kitchen and uses it as her blankie. She will sleep in blankets, but prefers her sleep mat (it has the same material as a donut bed), donut bed, slung over her brother, or a good towel to a blanket. No clue lol
    Another good toy is the crochet eggs or wonkies. I crochet my own toys for them, and Felix gets super upset if anyone touches them or Sugar takes them.
    Annie and Sugar can both fit in those hide and seek dog toys. For them, it’s 3 to 4 toys plus a bed lol

    Just wanted to pop in to say that lone ferrets can absolutely be fine, at least in my many years of ferret experience. You form a different relationship with them, which to me feels more intense and they tend to be so much more snuggly. Get two or more if you can, that's awesome, but don't let her thoughts on this dissuade you from getting one if that is where you're at. :)
    If aliens want to take me away from humanity, please do so. I await my beachfront simulated habitat where I can sunbathe and read while sipping on coconut margaritas. Beam me up.
    Great toy suggestions overall though! Thank you for the video and your cute blue hair. Your ferrets are lucky to have you.

    • @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets
      @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets  3 года назад +2

      I would still disagree with you. I think it's awesome that your ferrets were alright being alone, but I continue to encourage everyone to get more than one. The reality is that the care requirements don't change very much whether you have 1 or 2 ferrets. You're still spending pretty much the same amount of time feeding, playing with, and cleaning up after them. So in my opinion, why wouldn't you just get two? I would also disagree that ferrets are more cuddly when you only have one. I had Luna as a lone ferret for quite a few months before adding more and she's always been just as squirmy. Lyra and Andromeda, on the other hand, are both huge cuddle bugs, both with me and their sisters. It really comes down to individual personalities when cuddles are involved

    Sooo I’m getting kind of scared. I will be getting my first ferret in august but only one. That is because I live in Sweden and adopting a ferret is REALLY hard. We do not sell ferrets in pet stores and there are very few breeders. My closest breeder lives 4 hours away from me. Not only is it hard to find breeders, I was one of 8 people who was chosen to adopt a ferret while there were 27 other people who also wanted to adopt.
    I really want to get another ferret but my only way to do that is to wait for a ferret that needs to be rehomed and that could take up to 6 months. And I mean in all of Sweden.
    I’m starting to feel so much guilt and I don’t know what to do...
    As soon as I find a ferret who needs to be rehomed I will adopt though😥

    Ferret are ok alone but you have to considere this : « Wild polecats, as most other mammalian species, are solitary by nature, with adults encountering one another only for breeding or territory maintenance purposes. Thus it is appropriate for pet ferrets to be kept singly.2, 25 That said, a greater responsibility resides with owners as the sole providers of all options for healthy activity. Domestic ferrets, when given the opportunity, usually accept and engage with other ferrets. A huge proportion of their energy can be exhausted in this sort of social setting with no more investment from owners other than to be present to supervise, then sit back and enjoy the show. Well-socialized ferrets stalk, pounce, chase, and wrestle, engaging in an exhibition of their natural predatory, territorial, and breeding behaviors. Bonded ferrets usually prefer to sleep piled on top of one another. When choosing to house multiple ferrets together, most rescue organizations advise keeping a minimum of 3 ferrets, because they have a tendency to develop extremely strong bonds and the loss of a single companion can have detrimental consequences for a surviving ferret. Many ferrets experience grieving as is seen in species that mate for life, the severity of which can require hospitalization for prolonged anorexia, relapse of a previously controlled Helicobacter gastritis, or stress-induced gastrointestinal ulceration. Methods of introduction are beyond the scope of this article and are discussed in detail elsewhere. »
    « poorly socialized ferrets can become more affable and gregarious.»
    So with one ferret you become the other ferret :)
    ALSO YOU NEED TO CONSIDER THE VET BILLS THAT CAN DOUBLE OR TRIPLE ! we speack about 1000 $ in back up per ferrets !
    I know some people who have experience with ferret that have to separate ferret because they are dangerous to each other so you have to get them out seperatly and have two cage.
    And sorry but your alien thing is right in some way but not realistic in a ideal world we let ferret free in nature do the job they have to do and they will die young. We are all egoist to keep animal with us (I include myself). Maybe you will not understand what I'm trying to say but its to long to explain.

    I'm looking to get some ferrets in a few months. I've done enough research to know I want at least two, and I think four ferrets would be a little too much. What is your guys's opinions about getting two or three ferrets? Which one do you think is better?

    • @mildlynerdy
      @mildlynerdy 3 года назад +7

      Personally, I think 3-4 is the perfect number since there will always be someone to pair off and play with and if one of them (I hate to say it) passes away for whatever reason, they'll have their other companions there for comfort. I would suggest starting with 2 so you can get into a routine and figure out whether they're the right pets for you, then add on more as time passes. Jumping into a business (hehe), even one on the smaller side, could easily overwhelm someone new to owning ferrets. I hope that helps!

      I'm in the same boat. I work at an animal rescue and conservation centre, and at the start of the year a family brought in their ferret after they found they couldn't meet her needs. We have other ferrets there, and we've tried over and over to try and introduce them safely, but even after all the time we could give them, she goes off her food for days on end and it's very concerning to us. I've decided to adopt her, and will hopefully do so before the end of the year, and maybe someday will try introducing her to other ferrets again at some point in the future. 🤞

    • @mildlynerdy
      @mildlynerdy 3 года назад

      I was in the same boat twice. It just takes time! When I introduced Jax to my younger two boys, he fought with them constantly. It took 4 weeks for him to sort it out with the first boy and about 9-10 months with the second. Now they're all best buds and play and snuggle together all the time 😊
      It's not uncommon at all for newly introduced ferrets to fight and wrestle and bite and whatnot until they figure each other out. The rule of thumb is: no pee, poop, or blood, no foul. The more you intervene, the longer it will take for them to get used to each other. But if they do any of those three things, it's time to separate them and try again in a few hours or the next day. Hopefully that helped 💜

I’d like to get her a friend but she’s just never been interested in interacting with another ferret. • @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets
      @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets  3 года назад +2

      Even if your ferret doesn't play with other ferrets, psychologically it is still healthy for them to be around their kind. Similarly to how closeness to other humans produces endorphins for us ^-^ Nova doesn't often play with her sisters, because she's old and tired, but she still benefits from the social bond of being surrounded by other ferrets. It's good that your ferret gets playtimes with her sisters, but don't think that her unwillingness to play doesn't mean she isn't benefiting

      But there are times when he decides he wants to play with the girls and he gets so excited... the girls also snuggle with him during sleep time... even though he's very much a loner, we know he enjoys the companionship with the girls even though he rarely plays with them.

    Is it safe to have toys out while I am not home? Cause I know some aren't ferret safe but it depends on the ferret. I do not have ferrets yet but I am currently in the state of ferret proofing my room so they can free roam. Also are diy toys safe? Like if I make it with felt, Jean fabric, etc with hot glue or sewn up?

    • @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets
      @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets  4 года назад +1

      I leave toys out for my ferrets when we aren't home. The difference between leaving them out in free roam space and leaving them out in the cage is a matter of space. In the cage, the ferrets don't have much to do, whereas if they have a large space with more stuff to do they're less likely to get bored and chew! It's hard to give a strict "yes" or "no" with DIY toys because they're all very different, so it's really up to your own digression. If you're concerned, I recommend taking them away because it's better to be safe than sorry

    I got my ferret of craigslist lil over 2 years ago.and they had her on the garage in a make shift cage.she was all alone.i bought her for xmas for my exs daughter when we were together.she bites.ayou cant put your hand in her cage to water or feed her so have to wear big thick gloves to do that.cant touch her she will bite you and draw blood.weve thought about getting another ferret for her bit we dont know if she will be aggressive like she is with us to another ferret.all she does is sleep sense we got her.but I do give her toys.she will play for about 5 min once in a while then ho back to sleep.but she does love her fleece throw blanket I bought her.and her cat toy.she doesnt care for the jungle balls at all.

      You don’t need to support Marshall in order to get a second ferret tho? You can just adopt one from a rescue/ rehoming situation.

      I know this was 2 months ago but I would focus on finishing your moving. Whenever you can start to let the ferret out more often. Anything is better than nothing. Obviously the ferret would love to have a ferret companion but only get one if you think you can take care of it. Good luck and I hope you and your ferret situation improves!

      Unless you're separating the kid from all other human contact for the rest of its life, the logic I'm applying to why you need more than one ferret doesn't apply to children. When you have an single child they still talk to, interact with, and are around other human beings. A lone ferret never sees another ferret again. Definitely not the same thing.

    I plan to get my first ferret in around two weeks. I plan on getting another ferret as well, but quite possibly not for about another two months. Should this length of time be a serious concern for my ferret's health and ability to interact, or is this short enough of a time where he will be okay?? If need be, I'll make the arrangements to get a second ferret sooner rather than later than 2 months from now.

    • @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets
      @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets  3 года назад +1

      Ideally, it'll be easier for you in the long run to get two of them at once (especially if they're litter mates) because then you don't have to go through the introduction process. It really depends on your situation though. I first got Luna as a lone ferret because she was being rehomed by her previous owner by herself, and about 3 months later I adopted Nova (who was also being rehomed alone by her previous owner). I had always intended on getting more, but it took me that long to find another ferret that I felt would fit well with her (and me).
      So I guess my answer is that it depends on the situation. I encourage you to be familiar with the introduction process for when you're bringing your second baby home (if you decide to wait). I have a video on it, if you're interested in watching that.

      @@FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets Thank you! I am quite familiar with the introduction process and am planning on getting a second temporary cage for the quarantine bit. But I need a little bit of time because I want to properly gauge how much time and money goes into my first ferret before I get the second one so I am better prepared. I would prefer to get them at the same time, but my first one has to come from a pet store (I'm going to a proper exotic pets store where they keep their animals very well) in order to get my permit. The state I live in has weird laws and ways of getting permits. I've have searched everywhere and the only breeders I have found in my state have stopped breeding in the past year or so.
      I want to get my second ferret from a proper breeder, but the closest is around 4-5 hours away. So I figured I'll prepare and two months from now I'll make that trip. I hate having to support Marshall ferrets in any way, but I have no other choice to obtain a permit from my state. There are no ferret shelters or rehoming in my area. I found one person trying to rehome her ferret, but it's no longer available.
      Sorry that was a really long response. 😅

      It depends on where you're from. I've gotten 3/4 of mine from kijiji and I have a video all about adopting ferrets from kijiji/craigslist/gumtree so you can check that out. Otherwise, here's a list of ferret rescues put together by pazuandfriends: docs.google.com/document/d/1oAw3Havv7X3XMSR5x-Wwj4uyhUpFzyHJcT7srTu9-mw/edit (it includes both canada and the USA). There's also a link to a reputable breeder list on there, though if you're planning on getting a ferret from a breeder you may have to wait until next spring since most reputable breeders have waitlists. Best of luck!

      Yes! I'm actually in the process of making it right now as I introduce Andromeda and Elara to Luna and Nova. I don't know how long the video will take because it really depends on how long it takes for my girls to get along. They're on day 15 of introductions though and, though it's slow going, they're doing really good! I'll hopefully have the video up within the next month or so

      Theyre a ferret mill (just like a puppy mill) which means they breed very unhealthy ferrets. The worst things they do is separating their kits from mom at far too young an age (which leads to social/developmental problems) and spay/neuter at only a few weeks old (which leads to cancer and hormonal problems in the future). And all of the products they sell (especially food/treats) are super unsafe and unhealthy. Eventually im making a video about this, I'm just working on it still.

    hi, im getting a ferret fairly soon but i can only get one. my best friend has ferrets so we will be doing playdates very often. is that a good amount of socialisation for my ferret? i will probably be able to get another about 6 months after my first. help :(

    • @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets
      @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets  4 года назад +3

      That situation is sort of complicated and depends a lot on the individual ferrets themselves. I do DEFINITELY think that you should get a second ferret in six months, regardless of if the play dates work out or not. Even if you did play dates 2-3 times a week, it won't be the same as being around another ferret 24/7 and your ferret will still get lonely. Now... when it comes to ferret play dates there are two main things to consider:
      1. Are the other ferrets vetted? You need to make sure that the other ferrets have been to the vet to rule out having parasites, mites, or any illnesses that may transfer to your ferret (or vice versa)
      2. The temperaments of the ferrets. Play dates seem really amazing in practice, but the fact of the matter is that a lot of the time they just don't work out. Some ferrets are territorial or aggressive with ferrets that they don't know, so a play date will actually just turn into a fight. Take my ferrets for example: Elara is highly aggressive with new ferrets or ferrets she doesn't know (especially in her territory), Nova has adrenal which sometimes makes her aggressive towards other ferrets because of her hormone imbalance, and Luna is terrified of newcomers (she runs and hides when unfamiliar smells are around).
      This isn't to say that play dates won't work out, but make sure that you've prepared yourself in case they don't. Best of luck with your new ferret though! I really hope you can get another one soon

      @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets  3 года назад

      My girls aren't very destructive and the balls are pretty solid. I think with a destructive and stronger ferret, they may pose a risk; but each ferret is different so what works for some won't work for others.

Plenty of people impulse buy and then immediately rehome baby ferrets, you’re bound to come across one eventually if you keep searching :)

      Dont get one then. If you cant afford two, you cant afford one because most ferrets get medical issues in their life and need very expensive vet bills. Trust me, it's just better not to get them than to give them away.

      on pazuandfriends channel theres a video called "ultimate ferret care guide", check that out. Her channel has a lot of informational videos.
      In the future make sure to do your research BEFORE purchasing an animal. Not researching before hand is known as "impulse purchasing" and it is very frowned upon. Impulse purchasing often leads to people owning an animal that they can't take care of, because they didn't know that specific animals care requirements when buying it and only after research find out that it's not a good fit for their lifestyle. Ferrets are very complicated pets and require very special care. If you have any specifc questions dm me on instagram, but please check out that youtube channel first.
