Good planning on having a flagman --- but why did it take so long for the crossing gates and lights to activate? It seemed like the engine was in the intersection before the gate landed. Do steam locos have some type of ''insulation'' that deactivates grade crossing gates and lights?
SEPTA put the crossings on island protection (they didn't activate until the train was right at it) because the train was only going 10 mph. If they weren't, people would be waiting for like 2 minutes for the train to go by since the activation points are set for 50 mph.
