Whenever I'm asked who my favorite singer-songwriter is, there's no hesitation to reply. Then they ask why. Because she reaches me. Deeply. She's my musical godmother and I love her dearly.
I highly tevommend this entire album, 'Blue' is widely regarded as one of the most importabt releases of the era. Her ability to write and deliver songs with such direct emotional impact was a revealation and has inspired generations of songwriters and artists since.
Joni had a baby that she gave up for adoption. That is why she says "I am gonna make a lot of money , and quit this crazy scene". Many years later she managed to reunite with her daughter. A happy ending! Polo please listen to her jazzy stuff, like Cotton avenue or Down to you.
I used to visit mates & we would share new albums, the 1st time I heard "Blue" it didn't gel in a crowded room, later that night on my own I read some of the lyrics & decided to put the album back on, laid on the floor with the record player behind my head & played it again, & fell in love, the poetry, the flow of vocals & music, Joni's openness. This album is a masterpiece in it's raw beauty. There are many others, happy journey through the catalogue of the best singer song writer ever.
And he's the one (of the better channels) who is giving the ladies' songs some reactions. It's been very frustrating trying to get people to hear the women.
I always think of skating outdoors on frozen rivers when I hear this. going for miles flying between river and sky. Its such a great way to lose yourself This song does bring that back... Not a Christmas song. The season is a major part of the setting....happy and joyful, colour and light. It makes pain sharper from the breakup or loss.
Such a good album. Herbie Hancock is my favourite musician and Tina Turner did an unexpectedly great job with "Edith and the Kingpin". I say unexpectedly because, even though I'm also a fan of hers, I didn't expect such tenderness in that song.
Thought you might find this interesting, Led Zeppelin apparently had a song about Joni Mitchell, going to California. You should definitely check it out.
So sad and so beautiful. This song is about her break up with Graham Nash from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and her wanting to come back home to Canada.
Besides being a Brilliant, singer songwriter, Joni was an artist. She paints self portraits, landscapes, and abstracts on large canvases, And considers herself an artist before a musician. She did most of the art for this video. I suggest Woodstock, Circle Game or California for her next song.
Joni was part of the growing up years and beyond of many Canadians and has a place deep within our hearts. I am happy you have discovered her. I am also very thankful for Brandi Carlile who with love has encouraged Joni to appear in front of her many fans again.
Hey Polo, long time lurker who has really enjoyed your channel and music journey. Your “old soul” and desire for beautiful music has been reassuring to me that this amazingmusic will live on. Joni is up there with the greatest poets of the 20th century and then there is her musicality and voice that is what we would call a triple threat. So creative and open. Thank you and please keep on keepin on sir…
Thank you to the listener who recommended this song! Definitely one in the top tier. Joni is like The Beatles, so many amazing songs on so many amazing albums, not a bad one in the bunch. One that sometimes gets overlooked is Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, and there is an 18 min song on it, that is like a magnum opus, a very inventive and complex song. Happy New Year to you Polo, and looking forward to 2025 reactions!
I'm glad you're hearing the music I have listened to for at least a half a century, so far you are impressed for what I call all the right reasons. Keep it up, I'm enjoying hearing them again and listening to your take.
Great voice, great artist and amazing lyrics.. There are a lot of incredible female vocalists out there including Cyndi Lauper "Time After Time", Aurora "Murder 5,4,3,2,1",..
My high school friend Kathy introduced me to so much great music, including Joni Mitchell. Kathy played beautiful piano and also wrote poetry and we used to listen to Blue for hours on end and then she'd make up her own songs. We lost touch after high school and I miss her to this day.
I love this song 💗. When I was in High School I used to sing and play guitar at bars , clubs and all kinds of events. I sang Both Sides Now. Another Joni song from back in the day.
There is a video on RUclips where Joni Mitchell sings this song with Herbie Hancock on the piano and several jazz musicians backing her up. I believe itwas at Yahoo headquarters.
Joni has a quite wonderful catalogue, unmatched for its depth of emotion and songwriting. For me, quite probably the greatest catalogue ever committed to tape, enjoy the journey - I wish I could discover it all again.
No sir, it's not just you that think she's a top tier singer and songwriter, experts and laymen say so too. Then again all you have to do is listen. Voice of an angel. I really love the song. Have you done "Help Me"?
If you've got to this point of joni you've stumbled upon something really Great! Blessings upon your journey through the analysis of musical greatness! Only wish you could have enjoyed it for the 50 domr years that I have!
I’m 68 almost. :) 6:37 Love Joni love this song I’ve heard River maybe dozens of times in my life. Always love hearing it almost like I’m hearing it for the first time every time that I hear it. Or something. 😉Thanks Polo. We have very similar tastes in music. Enjoy your show.
I still have my vinyl copy of this from over 50 years back. Every track is wonderful. She wrote this after splitting up with Graham Nash (from Crosby Stills and Nash). It's hard to recommend one track for review but if pushed I'd say, "A Case of You" is right up there. Rolling Stone voted the album the 3rd greatest album of all time. Joni Mitchel eventually drifted towards jazz, which her vocals suited perfectly, working with Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius. The JM album "Mingus" might interest you.
I've been following your Joni Journey. I just knew you would really succumb to all her charms. For me this period, Blue...Court and Spark..and especially Hejira are my favourites. Perhaps I might suggest Amelia or the title track Hejira.
One of the very top female singers and songwriters. Started out as a folkie, went electric, then to jazz and later orchestrations. And not a bad painter either. She usually did the artwork for her album covers. Probably had a hand in this music video. One of the greats.
X-mas makes a lot of people sad and stressed and wish they had a river. There's something neurotic about the way we repeat ad nauseum how wonderful it is, but few people actually live in such a bubble. In reality, X-mas is a very demanding holiday, where loneliness, domestic distress and crime rates sky rocket. This is the general melancholic appeal of this tune, not Mitchell's breakup.
If this one touched your heart, you will need to listen to "Little Green." I had Joni's "Blue" album on vinyl, wore it out and bought another and wore that one out, and replaced it with the CD. Needless to say, I love that album and everything on it.
Enjoyed ur reaction. Big Joni fan, I am from her era. 2 Joni songs that stand out to me out are 'Amelia' and 'Don Juan's Reckless Daughter'. The lyricism is top notch yet male artists like Dylan who are at her level, get more attention. I am also a big Billie Eilish fan and one reviewer compared Joni's 'Blue' album to Billie's latest "Hit Me Hard and Soft'. Not sure I would equate the 2 that way but Billie is also a once in a gen talent, very unique song writer and amazingly emotive singer imo. Thanks again.
Great choice, can I suggest exploring her 'Hissing of Summer Lawns' album, she starts leaning into jazz more. Herbie Hancock also does a project called The River with a variety of jazz and soul musicians covering Joni songs.
Joni wasn't a one trick pony too. This album was a surprisingly full flowering of her talent that had only been hinted at before. If Ladies Of the Canyon was a breakthrough the year before, this was a revelation. And of course, she veered into more of a esoteric and off-kilter take on Blue with For The Roses then changed it up by incorporating full band contributions and electric instruments in abundance for Court and Spark. That one was a huge commercial and criticial hit. So naturally, Joni followed it up with a series of jazzy and increasingly hard to penetrate releases. Always kept the listener on their toes!
One of those few songs, and few writers, that make me cry. Though I have to say, Lana Del Rey is the one who seems to be able to turn on my faucets at will.
You have reacted to a few of her early songs. You reacted to Both Sides Now (2000), but it is originally from 1966. All great. Perhaps you can try some of her later songs, "Tea Leaf Prophecy", "Beat of Bkack Wings", or her jazz somgs such as "God Must Be a Boogie Man".
Thanks for watching. Most of my requests come from here and I also read the comments below. If you want to support the show you can do that here www.patreon.com/poloreacts or show your love for the channel by buying me a coffee using this link www.buymeacoffee.com/poloreacts
You really should listen to "Sex Kills" by Joni. Totally different vibe with more great writing.
Any thing from this album 'Blue' will blow you away
After she left Graham Nash, she longed for Canada.
You’re gonna love her “ Help Me”- talk about sultry!
Listen to "Our House" by CS&N to hear the good times.
Whenever I'm asked who my favorite singer-songwriter is, there's no hesitation to reply.
Then they ask why.
Because she reaches me. Deeply. She's my musical godmother and I love her dearly.
Joni taps into my heart and soul like no one else. Absolutely the best.
I highly tevommend this entire album, 'Blue' is widely regarded as one of the most importabt releases of the era. Her ability to write and deliver songs with such direct emotional impact was a revealation and has inspired generations of songwriters and artists since.
In my opinion the greatest album by a female artist/group
@@BerryBlossomCt I think so too, can't think of any other album by a woman that rivals the songs on Blue. Everyone is a masterpiece.
Joni got me through my teens. Premium artistry. Her catalog is exquisite....jazzy...great jazzy...in her later years.
This song always makes me cry. You can totally feel her pain.
Joni had a baby that she gave up for adoption. That is why she says "I am gonna make a lot of money , and quit this crazy scene". Many years later she managed to reunite with her daughter. A happy ending! Polo please listen to her jazzy stuff, like Cotton avenue or Down to you.
Little Green

She was the greatest
Best album...Court and Spark
Touched me deeply as it did at age 16. Her paintings are delicate and touching - perfect in this video. Beautiful choice Polo
It is amazing to me, how much her music makes me feel.
Polo, you are my favorite reactor. I just love how thoughtful you are. Prince was really inspired by Joni mitchell, if you can believe it.
And he's the one (of the better channels) who is giving the ladies' songs some reactions. It's been very frustrating trying to get people to hear the women.
Prince was genius and recognized genius
Great song by a great artist.
Songstress and artist extraordinaire, and writes about things that nobody else does. She lived in very small towns (
I always think of skating outdoors on frozen rivers when I hear this. going for miles flying between river and sky. Its such a great way to lose yourself This song does bring that back...
Not a Christmas song. The season is a major part of the setting....happy and joyful, colour and light. It makes pain sharper from the breakup or loss.
Her album Blue is genuinely one of the best of all time 💙
You must hear Herbie Hancock's grammy winning letters to joni album. And River, particularly my friend.🎶🎶🎵🎶🩵✌️☮️🕊️💯
Such a good album. Herbie Hancock is my favourite musician and Tina Turner did an unexpectedly great job with "Edith and the Kingpin". I say unexpectedly because, even though I'm also a fan of hers, I didn't expect such tenderness in that song.
Just your average masterpiece here
Love you
Her catalog is endless. This is a fave of mine too. So raw and open
Joni is a gift. Thanks for sharing this today.
Creme de la Creme man!
I know every note of every song. Our beautiful genius! ,🇨🇦🙏❤️
My favorite Joni song. Thanks for playing.
Besides being a Brilliant, singer songwriter, Joni was an artist. She paints self portraits, landscapes, and abstracts on large canvases, And considers herself an artist before a musician. She did most of the art for this video.
I suggest Woodstock, Circle Game or California for her next song.
Her phrasing and breath control is unmatched.
Joni was part of the growing up years and beyond of many Canadians and has a place deep within our hearts. I am happy you have discovered her. I am also very thankful for Brandi Carlile who with love has encouraged Joni to appear in front of her many fans again.
makes me cry, so sad and beautiful
Absolute CHILLS every time I hear this song... tears too... ❤
Prince loved Joni...genius recognizes genius !
“Down To You” is one of Joni’s high points, you should really check out that song. Stunning performance and arrangement.
My ultimate fav ever. She was so cool, we listened over and over again. Saw her in Dallas at Moody Colluseum. Joni my peace place at 16.
My dream girl made me go to a Joni concert. Lovely woman, both
Beautiful song. The whole album is classic. I discovered it as a teen in the 70s, played the album over and over...
Her voice and writing has an airy, ethereal quality to it. It transports you to a different place and time stands still. Thanks for reviewing it!
Joni did all her cover artwork. Look at her album art. She is a complete artist. One of my favorite artists.

Me. I am big Joni fan. My favorites are Coyote and Amelia. I'm not sure songwriting comes any better than Amelia.
Those are two of my top favorites as well. I also love "Song for Sharon" and "Refuge From the Road" from that album.
Saw her at Isle of Wight Festival 1970. She is a special performer and writer with an amazing voice.
Me too
I’d recommend the live version of Woodstock. Filmed in 69 or 70. She’s wearing a pink dress. It’ll blow you away.
I'm glad you're hearing the music I have listened to for at least a half a century, so far you are impressed for what I call all the right reasons. Keep it up, I'm enjoying hearing them again and listening to your take.
If you love this, the whole Blue album, which this comes from, would be on your playlist. It is one of the great albums of all time.
Great voice, great artist and amazing lyrics.. There are a lot of incredible female vocalists out there including Cyndi Lauper "Time After Time", Aurora "Murder 5,4,3,2,1",..
She just draws the emotion out of you. Makes you think and feel. Genius. Blue is my favorite album. Take a deep dive. You will not be sorry.
Well said. Another song of hers I find to be deeply moving is "Down to You." Thanks.
My high school friend Kathy introduced me to so much great music, including Joni Mitchell. Kathy played beautiful piano and also wrote poetry and we used to listen to Blue for hours on end and then she'd make up her own songs. We lost touch after high school and I miss her to this day.
One of my faves... so love this. Such. Canadian lyric... love that whole album. 'Blue' especially.
I love this song 💗. When I was in High School I used to sing and play guitar at bars , clubs and all kinds of events. I sang Both Sides Now. Another Joni song from back in the day.

The song that refers the the banished gave up is titled “little green” from the same album. But they are all beautiful. ❤
You've got a great heart, Polo.
Perhaps one of the greatest poets ever born. ❤❤❤
"Blue" is pretty much a perfect album. It's worth hearing every single track in order and all together.
Some songs give me goosebumps. This one gives me a lump in my throat. It literally hurts, right now.
No sir, it's not just you that think she's a top tier singer and songwriter, experts and laymen say so too. Then again all you have to do is listen. Voice of an angel. I really love the song. Have you done "Help Me"?
Joni Mitchell hits different
Fun fact: Joni is one of Maynard J Keenan's biggest influences.
Summer of '72 I was a counselor at a sleep away camp. This album played every night as we were going to sleep.
If you've got to this point of joni you've stumbled upon something really Great! Blessings upon your journey through the analysis of musical greatness! Only wish you could have enjoyed it for the 50 domr years that I have!
Her And Karen Carpenter, I've Said That For 50 Years Now Polo! 👍🙂
Watch her live BBC concert from October 1970. It will blow your mind. Just her with one instrument at a time. The best.
Just listen to the entire Blue
album from start to finish 💙💙💙🎄
So beautiful. One of my personal favorites is her song “Amelia”. If you liked “River” as much as it appears you did, I think you would also love it.
This song is a heartbreak.
Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire
I highly suggest ‘A Case of You’ next. Another one of her songs that gives you chills.
I've been WAITING for you to listen to this one!! I think this is my FAVORITE by her, because of the lyrics....ANY JONI is GREAT!! ENJOY, POLO!!!
all time great song
I’m 68 almost. :) 6:37 Love Joni love this song I’ve heard River maybe dozens of times in my life. Always love hearing it almost like I’m hearing it for the first time every time that I hear it. Or something. 😉Thanks Polo. We have very similar tastes in music. Enjoy your show.

One of Prince's favourite artists apparently.
The Blue album is a masterpiece and Court and Spark is almost just as good imo. My favorite Joni song is A case of you.

You would enjoy her live version of “for free”. Black and white. Solo piano
If this one touched your heart, you will need to listen to "Little Green."
I had Joni's "Blue" album on vinyl, wore it out and bought another and wore that one out, and replaced it with the CD.
Needless to say, I love that album and everything on it.
This is a sad Christmas song for those who are alone at Christmas. The opening piano tune is Jingle Bells.
I love her song, "Come in From The Cold"
Great Reaction! The video was really cool to watch while taking in a beautiful song...almost places you right there.
Enjoyed ur reaction. Big Joni fan, I am from her era. 2 Joni songs that stand out to me out are 'Amelia' and 'Don Juan's Reckless Daughter'. Love the song, love the artist and love the genre. Carry on♡
Joni is a unique talent. Check out her Court and Spark album. All good.
I would like to recommend "Cactus Tree" fron Joni's first album "Song to a Seagull"
Help Me and Free Man in Paris are great songs by Joni.
Fun fact: Charles Mingus' last album was with Joni Mitchell.
"A Case of You"
That's the one.
Great choice, can I suggest exploring her 'Hissing of Summer Lawns' album, she starts leaning into jazz more. Herbie Hancock also does a project called The River with a variety of jazz and soul musicians covering Joni songs.

It Is Polo, It's a Christmas Song For People Who Are Lonely At Christmas ( Jingle Bells ) 🙂
My all time* favorite female vocalist ever. & She's a better songwriter than she is a singer.
*-Tied with Linda Ronstadt
Would love your reaction to Joni's Two Grey Rooms (a true story)
The melody is actually jingle bells.
How does Jingle Bells become a melancholy ballad..
Sarah Mclaughlin does a beautiful cover of this....
