One of the greatest lines in cinema
When he said "My heart is broken." I felt that more than I should have.
Sheen saying "my heart is broken" really wrenches at my heart strings. I am an addict and went through my own similar hell in real life (marriage breakdown and custody fight over my 3 beautiful young children) Haunted by my dreams and demons equally. I'm glad to be free of who I used to be.

I always loved this aspect of the movie being about two broken men facing one another and the winner not acquiring wholesomeness, but assimilating into himself the brokenness of his defeated equal, just like neither America nor Vietnam won the war in reality but had to carry the corpses and the ghosts of the war with them into the future, the US went into a crisis of identity and Vietnam had to deal with the inequality and corruption of the pre-war status-quo.
The war is a tragedy for both side

I was 14 when "Apocalypse Now" hit theaters. Some of my friends bought tickets from a clerk who routinely looked the other way regarding Rated R movies; they were blown away.
I planned on doing the same. Before I could my mom asked me if I wanted to go to the movies (we did theater nights around once a month, she took me to see all kinds of stuff). I agreed. Her pick was "Apocalypse Now." Heavy stuff.
Usually after a movie we'd go to a diner and talk about what we'd seen. That night she requested a rain check until the next day instead. She needed time to think about it which suited me because so did I.
Four decades later and it is still one of my favorite films. She still uses lines in everyday conversations. "Terminate, with extreme prejudice" and "And for your sins they gave you one."
I was lucky to have cinephiles for parents.

I was 18 and I took my 14 year old brother and a friend to see this film - you could have heard a pin drop as people left the theatre. I never heard or saw anything like that again. We were pretty quiet on the ride home even. We needed time to process that film.
My dad was around ten when he saw it. Said it gave him nightmares.

Definitely one of the most raw and profoundly real depictions of self-loathing and agony of addiction to ever to be captured on film. It is stunning.

To injure yourself and painting yourself with your blood while exorcizing your demons is cinematic gold.... platinum. Fantastic commentary and epic movie production, writing, cinematography et al. No wonder I go back once a year or more and watch it. Would love to have a copy of the dossier.
Sheen's passive roll was perfect, being an experienced, combat hardened soldier, he was like a coiled snake.. Patiently preserving himself, hardening himself for what he knew he had to do in the final climactic scene.. Fate had made it so he was the only one that could get close to Kurtz.. kutrz knew he was going to die, even welcomed it, and wanted to go out like a soldier.. hence chef's death, (lance was too spaced out to kill anyone, and his puppy returned him to a childhood state, rendering him harmless) , no, willard would be the one, and he's been steeling himself, reducing himself to a reptilian state, need to do this one final deed.. pure clarity and purpose in a world of chaos..
He receded into himself from the second he got his order's, knowing he would never be the same when it was done.. but still needing his mission to retain sanity in the chaos...
There's a sense of Chaos throughout the entire movie, the only one that act's rationally , and thinks rationally through the whole film is Willard (though Phillips keeps has a good head, but is disposed of as just transportation up river, Hall created excellent tension on the trip with Willard, but looses effective control when they shoot up the puppy boat) , Coppola's use of filters added a lot of depth and tapped into memories we all have being on a the water, one can almost smell, and sense the river flowing beneath him, as they fight it's current, the VC and them selves.. Willard had to beat the river before he could defeat Kurtz, and the river is a character in this movie as much as anyone else..

Chief also experienced that foreboding that was in Willard. He kept making references to it when he mentioned the story of the similar mission suicide, his halting inquiry that night at the Do Lung Bridge, and finally his last barrage of accusation during the Montangaard spear attack which caused his death...
Yes, he knew he'd lost control of his authority the moment Willard put that .45 cal. round in the dying sampan girl, and it waned even more, mixed with anger, after the death of one of his charges, Clean.
But his snapping at Willard with the, "...My orders say I'm not supposed to know where I'm takin' this boat, so I don't. But one look at you, and I know it's gonna be hot!" confrontation, was when he knew for certain that this trip up the river was ill-fated.

@@gjvmbmvm575 I had a brutal marriage breakdown (leading to my breakdown) around a year ago. I lost my wife, my children and my house. I have a history of addiction but somehow never turned to drugs or drink. I now see my children and realise how much happier I am away from my wife. I hope to one day forgive the many things she did to me (tried repeatedly to get me arrested in front of my kids, tried to stop me seeing my kids altogether and a lot,lot more!) Things WILL get better, things WILL get easier. I wish you all the luck in the world mate.

I am astonished by the fact of Sheen's interpretation. I have never consider him a really great actor, but now I'm surprised by how this scene is deep and emotional.

Watched apocalypse now last night for the first time in a LOOOONG while, forgot how good it is. Personally I’m a platoon guy, BUT that does not take anything away from how amazingly epic and excellent of a film apocalypse now is. Honestly they’re two completely different films and both are great, same with full metal jacket.

This is a great series. Funny how life is. And the strange synchronicity between life and art. I saw Apocalypse Now when it first came out. I was 14. It sealed the deal for me and I enlisted in the Army four years later. I wanted to be Willard. And I got my dream. I ended up infantry, intelligence, airborne, ranger... and an alcoholic. Just like Willard. And Sheen, too. But then I had my coming to Jesus moment... Having watched the original interview of Sheen in its entirety, he testifies that filming this scene was the moment he finally came to grips with his need to surrender to God. The godless won't get it but I suspect there are many on here who know what I am talking about. Thank you for this documentary series, Tyler. And thank you, Mr. Coppola, Mr. Milius, and Mr. Sheen for this incredible, life-changing film, Apocalypse Now. Conrad's Heart of Darkness could not have been filmed any other, better way.
I have never been a big drinker. It’s only until my late 40s that I have ever been very drunk. And you can go to some funny places when you are by yourself. I can see how FFC and Martin unleashed something very powerful in that moment. He didn’t care what he looked like, how twisted and odd his movements were, naked, writhing and bloody. And Sheen became so suggestible as to what to think about and then it came out on film. There is so much happening in apocalypse but its funny that over 40 years later we are still talking about what happened in that room in Manila.
Another funny thing: in the world of wristwatch fans everyone knows the big seiko dive watch that sheen is wearing is the “Willard”. Recently seiko released the 6105 diver again and it is still called that. I wonder if Martin knows that now.
The important thing that Coppolla, and Martin Sheen made obvious about Willard, is that he was a guy who had adapted his entire being to fighting the war and (like Kilgore and of course Kurtz), had sold their soul to it. And Willard had become so enmeshed with the war he could only function when he was fighting in it; and he now realized that a return to civilian life was no longer possible. Even if he survived, his soul would still belong to the war and there was nothing he could do about it. ("It's always 15 minutes away for us", I have heard more than one Vietnam vet say.)

Interesting how Martin Sheen was "facing his demon" in that scene and since he smeared blood all over his face, he looked like an actual demon.

My grown daughter wasn't interested in seeing this movie until I begged incessantly. She's not into war movies. I said it's one of those movies you HAVE TO see at least once in your life, a very important masterpiece. We finally did watch it together and it gripped her firmly from the start, enjoying it immensely. I saw it first at 8 years old at a drive in movie. Of course I watched it years later when I could fully understand it. Martin Sheen was best to play Cpt. Willard.

Keitel is a fabulous actor, one of my favourites as it happens, but he wasn't right for this role in my opinion. McQueen might have pulled it off, especially if you consider Papillon, but I think he was too old for the role. He would, perhaps, have been better cast as Kurtz. Having said that it's difficult to imagine anyone other than Brando.

I've seen Apocalypse more times than I can count since around 1981 when I first saw it as a 12-year-old (it was the first "grownup" film my folks allowed me to watch, along with Godfather I and II). I still watch it around once a year. I just watched it again last night, and I can't believe how incredibly moved I can be by a film I already know so well. An absolutely staggering achievement.

I don’t know why, but I’ve always interpreted this opening as Willard reminiscing about the events of the movie, with a flashback staring with the jump cut to the helicopter. That doesn’t make much sense, but might add an extreme element of tragedy considering that Willard is begging for another mission after the end of the Kurtz mission.

This film will always be on my top seat of favorite movies. Not only because of how great it is but also we will never see anything like it again. So many things came together to make this masterpeace.

@@hypnocilicdreams apparently he shot a few early scenes in a different incarnation of the character but then they lost the scenes and all the other stuff started happening so I don't know if he got busy or whatever but then they recast him

Nice to get the full story behind this scene. I think Francis did take a big risk with this. When it’s no longer acting and someone is distressed or hurt then I think you’ve crossed the line. It’s an actors job to make this look real when it’s not - not the other way around. At the end of the day it’s cinema and not reality.

I would make a case for Vilmos Zsigmond, who is one of my favorites of all time, but both are equally amazing. I think his work on Close Encounters is some of the best I’ve ever seen.
4:43 Dario Argento: back in the 90's me and my college roommates were at the video store looking for a good horror flick. We had no idea who Dario Argento was but I saw that Motorhead was in the soundtrack so we got it and have been huge fans of his movies ever since LOL.

I believe he is the only filmmaker ever to knowingly use a functioning alcoholic or substance addict in a starring or key role.... ever.
