@@O_mores Yeah that is my github account. I wrote the comment above under the assumption that you were the person who i originally described this issue and fix in emails with, but apparently i was wrong :p I assume that person is the one that wrote the blog post instead, cool nonetheless! I still need to find a "run old x86 thing on new x86 hardware" community to hang out in as that is one of my big passions and overfixations lol
wow that is insane! Windows 98 on such modern hardware, never thought it could be achieved I see that you also have an ATI X300 PCIe, are you able to get it working in Windows 98? then the last bit is getting sound. I dont know of any PCIe sound card that has Windows 98 compatible drivers ...
Well, the X86 architecture is quite something... The X300 should work, I have an X700 which worked perfectly fine on a i3-9100. Indeed, there are no native PCI-E sound cards for Windows 98, but there are a few PCI-E sound cards which are using Windows 98 era chips like CMI8330 + a PCI-E to PCI bridge chip. These are cheap also, like 15$ on ali. This motherboard which I'm using has a classic PCI slot so I can use almost any PCI sound card I want. I have also a PCI-E to USB adapter which is Windows 98 compatible.
I love how committed people are to running Windows 98 on ultra-modern hardware. For almost no seemingly good reason except that it can just be done. I really miss this era of operating systems. It wasn't perfect, but it felt a lot more exciting than the uninspired garbage Microsoft cranks out today. If only more modern video cards could be run and HD sound drivers could be created, it could open the door to a heck of a lot of cool things. I know some of the good folks over at MSFN has tried getting HD sound to work but I'm not exactly sure how successful it was.
I did some research... In 2002 there were 500 million computers alive and Windows 98 market share was about 50%. From 1998 to 2006 (when 98 support ended) there must have been over 300.000.000 million Windows 98 users. Old habits die hard... :) | For sound there are many solutions, with a 10$ PCI-E to PCI adapter you can use almost any PCI sound card. Now I want to buy a socket 1700 motherboard with 4 PCI slots and 3 PCI-E (found something `industrial` but in a standard ATX format for about 300$) and this way I can use PCI compatible hardware with 98: PCI to USB, PCI to SATA, sound card etc. In the same time I can boot into Windows 11 for more serious work.
What are our options for GPU? I hope there is a way to do something crazy like get one of the extra cores to simulate a GPU so we're not stuck with 16 color
We are not stuck at with 16 colors at all, there are 3 generations of PCI-Express cards from nVidia that will work with Windows 98: 1) early and rare PCI-E FX59xx series 2)very common, cheap and easy to find 6xxx series + 7xxx series. A 7600GT is like 20$. Depending on model some patching is required. Also ATI X300/X500/X600/X700/X800/X850 PCI-E cards will simply work with Windows 98/ME without any additional patches. In the end, we can use VBE universal drivers that are only 2D and will work with many cards, including RTX series, these are good for software rendering in games and they bring 16M colors + full hd resolutions. That thing with the CPU can't be done.
I don't know, it works for me every time. I think it's tested on at least 20 different modern motherboards. I recently installed Windows 98 and ME on Intel Z790 motherboard with a BIOS released in November 2024 and it simply worked.
@O_mores ok I think I might've found the problem It does work when you use the iGPU I used a 7200GS PCIE and it did not work So it wasn't clear but I think it was a GPU problem
My USB keyboard and mouse don't work in Windows 98, but do work in DOS. when I start Windows it stops working, the bad thing is I don't have any PS2 port in my motherboard. I tried options like legacy USB support and PROT 60/64 port emulation, that either didn't work what to do without having to install fancy cards in motherboard. can we use any Generic driver to emulate USB to PS2 what to do
Do you have a serial port header? You can use that for mouse, and it's 100% compatible with all OSes. This is a curios case, because if it works in DOS it should work in Windows 98 too. After all, you might want a PCI-Express card that gives you USB support for Windows 95 OSR2, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP and newer. Especially because Windows 2000/NT/XP most of time do not like USB emulation which is done by the BIOS. I use this card from Startech, even if it's PCI-Express it is recognized automatically by Windows 98: www.pinzaru.ro/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pci_e_via_6212L-scaled.jpg
I'm planning to buy an RX 580. Will it work on Windows 2000? Or which graphics card should I choose with the best support for Windows 2000, Windows 11, 4K video editing, and Hackintosh? Do you have any drivers, brother?
I also tried installing Windows 98. It worked in DOS until I started the setup, but once the setup began, the keyboard and mouse stopped working again. By the way, does your card work in the BIOS? Mine doesn't, so I strongly suspect the card I bought is either not genuine or fake. I've sent alternative card links to your Reddit.
It's actually quite common for the BIOS to emulate keyboard and mouse support, especially for USB devices, so it's unlikely that your card is fake. The issue you're seeing might be related to how your BIOS is handling USB input during the Windows 98 setup. I'd recommend checking the BIOS settings to ensure USB Legacy Support is enabled, which allows the BIOS to emulate a PS/2 keyboard and mouse. Sometimes, older operating systems struggle with USB input without this support, especially during setup. Hopefully, that helps!
