Chorizo Hot Dogs, Pizza, & Fernet - Drunk Eats Buenos Aires

  • Allie Lazar hits the streets of Buenos Aires to sample some of the best late night food the city has to offer. Nights in Buenos Aires run long and late, as dinner isn’t usually served until 9pm, and the cuisine is heavily influenced by Italy and Spain. Aperitivo is essential: usually a vermouth- or fernet-based drink and a picada, the Argentine version of tapas or finger food, which is often a big board of various meats and cheeses. Allie starts her night off with a homemade Italian-Porteña meal, followed by a happy hour with various cocktails and a pizza to go. She ends her night with a typical Argentine street food: choripán, a chorizo hot dog.

Notice that the blurred coca-cola sign outside Don Carlos is black and white and not the normal red and white!? The reason for this is that this is in the Boca district where the football club Boca Juniors come from. Their arch rival and bitter enemy is River Plate who wears the color red/white. So the red/white is banned in the whole boca district!!!

Argentinean food is fucking amazing. It's like a European melting pot. I love how they don't have a menu. It's just, "here, sit down, let me feed you." There was this place I used to go in Venice, CA, that these guys from Argentina owned and when I would go in there they would just bring out things for me to try. I fucking loved it. Also being Italian this sort of thing--showing love with food--is very spiritual for me. Although in my family it was showing love by bashing you over the head with a wooden spoon. :)

It's really cool to see an american speaking spanish with an accent and everything. It wasn't until maybe halfway into the video I said 'wait one second, is she american?' It's inspiring me to try to use the spanish i learned in school and not be too worried about it. Good episode, just that when I always thought of Argentine vermouth it was always Gancia (white) that came to mind not red. Here in the US red is sweet white dry in Gancia is a sweet white, also great in a Gancia Batido. Also mollejas are a cow's thymus glands not gizzards, because chicken gizzards are mollejas de pollo,(which I never ate or saw there) .. For tourists I do not recommend going to La Boca, not just as a River Plate fan but because besides Caminito which is a tourist trap, it is very unsafe and part of the "half moon (croissant) of death" which starts in La Boca and goes to the Riachuelo out west by la villa 1-11-14. Look up in youtube "Motochorro de la boca"

I will recommend first of all to visit the south of our country(patagonia, bariloche) and u can make a stop in buenos aires for a few days but don’t u ever fuckin go to la boca that’s a tourist trap like times sq in nyc , there will be loads of people trying to finnesse u and shit , instead go to neighbourhoods like recoleta, palermo or san telmo (la boca it’s just known for boca juniors but every tourist goes there to take photos of those fuckin houses, shit corny as hell)

And for the love of god don’t come here with a lot of cash , use credit cards because we have some very high levels of crime , there are some mofos waiting in the airport just to rob you outside when u r trying to take a cab
