Lived in Vancouver for 5 years and Calgary for 20. I know both cities very well.
Calgary takes most categories hands down when it comes to liveability for the average person.
Calgary has sunshine 333 days per year. Vancouver has sunshine 180 days per year.
Calgary is much more affordable for pretty much everything. My dollar goes about 30% further in Calgary.
Calgarians are much friendlier and easier to engage that Vancouverites. I have found it much easier to make friends in Calgary.
Both cities have amazing and easy access to nature.
Vancouver has the ocean and calgary has beautiful river systems.
Vancouver has more robust food and entertainment culture but Calgary isn’t far behind.
I chose to move to Calgary to have more sunshine and to be able to have a disposable income again.
I am very happy with my choice to move to Calgary.
Both cities are pretty awesome but it depends on what you are after.

This comment is a much better overview than this video. Wasted 30 minutes on watching 3 people talking about nothing

Thank you! I really care about the sunshine condition, that helps a lot!

Can you share more about the extreme winter comparing to Vancouver? Besides that, we’ve been in the city for 7 years but the homeless situation is challenging.

    • @mattlandsiedel

@@rachell2009 Calgary is definitely colder and gets more snow than Vancouver. Calgary gets chinooks which lead to mild climate throughout the winter to break up the winter. Vancouver is wet and damp but more mild in temperature than Calgary but significantly lacks the sunshine. I wish I could blend the two cities because it would be the most perfect city in the whole world for me.

I’m excited about moving from Victoria to Calgary. My wife and I are renting for the first year to try it out after our wedding before we decided to purchase. I love Victoria but it hurts to try and survive here and miss out on my 20s. Getting ahead is almost impossible since I don’t have rich parents.

Ya actually i went to calgary 2 weeks ago to see things for myself...i ended up buying a 10 years old detached 3000 sf for 700k. Calgary looked busier than mississauga actually nice wide highways and houses worth that money. In mississauga its like you are buying old broken chips at a casino. Definitely calgary is gonna boom big time this year

I can't stress enough.. if you haven't lived somewhere with the lack of sun that Vancouver has, really.. REALLY consider it. It's hugely brutal and SAD is a very real thing.

Lack of sun is, in my opinion, the worst possible weather trait for a city. Cold & heat can be inconvenient, but days & weeks without sun can make you incredibly depressed. Vancouver has been cloudy & raining for 7 days and the next 10 days are all forecast the same. Brutal stuff.

Sun is SOOOO important and you get a TON of it here in Calgary ☀️ ☀️ ☀️

True, I can't stress this enough to people that plan to live in Vancouver, it's brutal and depressing. The city shines golden in summer, but fall, winter and spring will make you sick and depressed.
