Love this kind of salad. It hails from the 50s. My grandma’s version of it, we’ve kept in our holiday recipes which is similar to yours, but more savory as there are walnuts instead of cherries and she would add both mayo and cottage cheese (the mayo shocks people but it is actually makes it very creamy and delicious). My grandma also used both lemon and lime-flavored Jell-Os along with the pineapple.

Her pro tip was letting the Jell-O partially set in the fridge before adding the rest of the blended ingredients so it maintains a fluffy texture and also chopping the walnuts by hand very finely.

Our family makes this but instead of cherries we add mini marshmallows to melt into the jello before adding the cottage cheese, also we add chopped pecans…it’s a hit!

The cherry juice is really good in Coca-Cola. If you want that old fashioned cherry taste just when you get a can of coke, just want some trade juice in the glass with ice and then put the coca cola in it and stir it up and drink it

Love the idea of walnuts. Any time I can use walnuts, I am making it. Using mayo too sounds perfect for texture. Thanks for the tweaks to the recipe!
