The Importance of Nonverbal Cues as told by "Friends"

  • The constant miscommunication that occurs online is a direct result of the absence of nonverbal cues, not able to translate across a computer screen. "Friends" is the perfect example of how important these nonverbal cues can be in the interpretation of messages. Also, "Friends" goes to show that face-to-face communication is a much better alternative over digital communication in ensuring proper communication.

For my lazy classmates I've listed all the questions here:
How Joey convince Ross thay he "can do it"?
    (Eye contact)
Why does Rachel's perception of "the yeti" drastically change?
    (Physical Appearance)
How does Ross know Phoebe is upset with him before she even says anything?
    (Spatial Behavior)
How can we tell Ross is so not "fine" even when he claims he is?
    (Paralinguistics: pitch)
How is Chandler able to convey his sarcasm?
    (Paralinguistics: tone)
How does the change in Ross's voice change the meaning of the statement made the second time?
    (Paralinguistics: tone)
How can we immediately tell Ross and Mike are both bored?
    (Kinesics: Posture)
How does Ross use his hands to get his message across? (and Joey)
    (Kinesics: Gesture)
    Thank me latur

There are nonverbal cues online as well. You just have to be fluent in the medium to perceive them. Some translate from face-to-face interactions directly and some indirectly. If you're still a skeptic, the most obvious example is hesitation. But there are many, many ways to communicate and detect tone online. And they can be just as difficult to describe as some of the intangible body language in this video.
