    I loved the portrayal of bourgeois democracy in the second season. The organizers did everything to sway the vote in their favor, and made it seem like free will. Pick the people with so much debt, half of them dying wouldn't cover it? Check! Pick the the ones most likely to take a risk? Check! Organize a fight, when the game might actually stop, and have the risk takers and those who think highly of themselves in one side? Check! Stop all conversation when, and only when, the opinion is starting to sway in the wrong direction? Cheeeck! Democracy, yes. But for what class?

    • @PixelForThought
      @PixelForThought  4 дня назад +25

      Exactly! The way they manipulated every aspect of the process to maintain the illusion of choice was so well done. It really highlighted how those in power use 'democracy' as a tool to serve their own ends while keeping the rest thinking they have control. The selection of participants alone was a masterclass in exploitation-preying on desperation and debt, knowing they'd take risks others wouldn’t. It’s such a sharp critique of how systems are designed to keep people divided and distracted. Democracy, sure-but only for the ruling class.

    When it comes to Daeho, i havent seen any reason to suspect his military story.
    Its stuff that happens with mandatory military service, you get all this training in whatever role you were chosen for (tho you can also apply and see if you pass/are accepted), but you usually see 0 actual action or fighting. Korea isnt really in an active war either so theres no reason to suspect he'd at his age see any real combat. Being in the marines would still be a point of pride because the training is very difficult and strenuous and more "prestige" than regular infantry.
    Hes also very young and eager to prove himself, especially when we take into account his story where his father wanted him to join the marines so the army would "make a man out of him" (a very common sentiment in traditional countries with mandatory military service), because he grew up eith 4 sisters and seemingly actually liked them and spent a lot of time with them.
    When faced with actual combat he tries his best to help and do what he needs to, he really wants to help and do his duty amd i think truly believes his "superior" training as a marine means he will be able to handle it but his fear and adrenaline cause him to constantly fumble and eventually go into full shock and shut down, also very common in young men who suddenly get thrust into armed conflicts in wars. I thought it was very well done as you really see his mental state degrading further and further over the episode and eventually shutting down.
    Daeho how i see it on top of everything else is also in his own way is a critique of mandatory military service and image of a perfect conscript young, strong, obedient determined to do his duty and stand up to fight for whats right.

      i agree with the beginning and the last part, and the attention that this character got with the topic that arises in his story is very complex and memorable.
      what i do not believe is that he really served the full amount of training. imho no way a person who was trained in the military before, even omitting training for actual battles, would not know how to use weapons. like how to place them in ur arms. i get that during the battle u’re scared to even peek for a second, but during the instruction from 120 he was waaay too confused. i feel like if you really have trained you would be shaking in fear but still hold the weapon automatically how you’re supposed to and used to.
      my guess is that the tragedy occurred in the beginning of his service & he somehow managed to not continue it but puts an act for his father and then others.
      i might be wrong so i would appreciate other opinions in the comments. he’s a complex character so this is an interesting discussion

      @@whatever5022Totally agree. I don't think he was an actual marine. Him being over-eager to show off his tattoo was one big tipoff for me. The biggest one though is when he first holds the MP5 in the main room with all the other rebels and he just looks confused. He's looking at the gun and definitely doesn't know how to use it. That scene has zero pressure. I'd believe he has PTSD if he was confident before the fight then got scared after but it seems that he's scared through and through. Only agreeing to help rebellion due to pride or keeping up his facade.

    What makes the voting especially heartwrenching is that initially, you have characters that still vote to continue even after the second round like Gi-hun's friend and Hyun-ju even after their best friends plead and beg them not to. What makes Young-mi's death so tragic is that, like many of the X players, she wanted to go home from the very start and was pleading, sobbing even for them to vote X so they could get out with their lives. Of course, our main characters eventually realize the cost of this mistake, but by this point, it's far too late, and too many of the wrong people have seized a hive-minded type of power. The need for money led everyone on the O side to basically hold the X players hostage and force them to play a game they didn't want to play anymore. Every time the game is voted to continue, it's a continuous death sentence for people who keep trying to get out of this horrible place. The reason the O players feel like they gradually lose more of their humanity is that they kept consistently prioritizing their need for money over the very lives of people begging them to stop so they could escape while still in debt, alive, and more likely to be able to pay it off. The constant voting in the second season shows the futility of being held hostage by a 'democratic vote' that forces you at gunpoint to follow rules that don't serve you and get you killed because more foolish, desperate, or hateful people willed it to do so. And we all know how foolish and hateful groups of people can be.

    • @PixelForThought
      @PixelForThought  21 час назад

      @@MoeMoe-ft7wj Everyone is so consumed by greed, chasing the illusion of wealth, that they fail to recognize their true needs-much like the bread scene with the salesman. It highlights how people are willing to sacrifice everything for a fleeting chance at something they believe will save them. The desperation and false hope of wealth cloud their judgment, blinding them to the fact that they’re already in a life-or-death situation, and that survival, not money, should be their primary concern.

    One thing I like about squid game is the diminishing return vs the sunk cost fallacy from the games. Many contestants justify the continuing of the games by saying “we’ve already got this far” but as you play more, you get less money in total because less people die per game.
    Additionally the game forces you to kill people to make money which they question in s2.
    You can’t win the squid games. It’s designed to kill everyone by the end except for one, and everyone believes they’re going to win, or make it out “together” but are both equally hopeless and nieve beliefs

    • @PixelForThought
      @PixelForThought  7 часов назад

      They've invested so much and risked their lives countless times that they can't bring themselves to walk away, fearing that doing so would render all their sacrifices meaningless. However, the brutal reality of the games is that the longer they play, the fewer rewards there are, as fewer contestants remain to share prize pool. Instead trapping players in a cycle of false hope until there's nothing left but inevitable death.

    A very thorough and enjoyable analysis and a great use of scenes from the show!
    There were a couple of inaccuracies in player backgrounds that I found jarring. You're correct that Oh Il Nam's failing health influenced his decision to join the game. However, there was no indication that Oh Il Nam suffered any economic losses beforehand. I believe he honestly wanted to experience again the joy of playing childhood games.
    And In ho had joined the game as a player in order to save his wife. Winning the money came too late, mirroring Gi hun's experience. However, you were absolutely correct that what In ho experienced and witnessed during his game was an important factor in his becoming The Front Man.

    • @PixelForThought
      @PixelForThought  7 часов назад

      Looking back, I think you're right. While this is the backstory Oh Il-nam gives to Gi-hun, some parts of it might be fabricated or exaggerated.
      That said, another possibility I like to consider is that his business was struggling, and fueled by greed or the desperation to maintain his wealth, he turned to illegal means-creating the games-as a way to secure his fortune. This adds a darker layer to his character, suggesting that even someone as wealthy as him could be driven by the same desperation and moral decay that the players experience.

    As an anarchist and labor organizer, thank you so much for making a true analysis instead of taking everything at face value, like much of the RUclips slop. Any understanding of an anti-capitalist series needs to understand how bourgeois democracy differs from proletarian democracy, and how revolutionary revolt differs from capitalist oppression. I also appreciate that you cite collective action as an alternative to competitive individualism.
    My only critique is that, coming as a PhD student who has to read a lot of the stuff undergrads submit, parts of the script editing are clearly AI generated. I recognize some of the phrases here as essentially only used by AI, such as "intricate dynamics," or overemphasizing "inequality" rather than "oppression" whose secondary effects include inequality (inequality is not the core problem of capitalism but rather the control of society by the bourgeoisie).

    Dae-Ho screamed stolen valor to me, though my current theory is that he was rejected for some reason, either before or during boot camp.
    He says his dad made him and he does seem really eager about the whole thing, but doesnt seem to really know about shooting a gun. He has to be told not to fire blindly which feels more like he isnt fully trained in using it more than ptsd. Even if he was terrified, I feel like a trained marine would know to not waste the bullets with such poor attempts, even if he was hiding the trauma.
    Which makes me think he had never gotten far enough to know the best way to fire the gun in that situation. Maybe he was kicked out and brought shame to himself and his father, leading him down the path that made him a candidate for the Squid Game. He has the tattoo because he wants to be seen that way and pretend it all happened like it was supposed to. He wants to help and to a degree he can, but this really seemed like the first time he had ever been in a firefight and he realized it was too much for him.

    • @PixelForThought
      @PixelForThought  2 дня назад +2

      @@Wandervenn That’s a solid theory, and it would definitely explain a lot about Dae-Ho’s behavior. The eagerness he shows could be more about proving himself to others-or even to himself-because of that sense of shame. The tattoo becomes almost like a mask, letting him hold onto this image of who he wanted to be, even if he didn’t actually get there.
      The way he handled the gun really does feel like someone who lacks full training. A real marine, even in a panicked state, would likely have that muscle memory to fall back on. Instead, his actions feel more desperate, like he’s compensating for what he doesn’t know. It’s a tragic thought that his attempt to prove himself might’ve been what landed him in the Squid Game in the first place.

    • @Wandervenn
      @Wandervenn 2 дня назад +1

      @@PixelForThought Actually, and maybe this works in favor of my theory, but he reminds me a lot of Kodai Tatta from Alice in Borderlands- The mechanic who befriends Arisu.
      Young, eager, wants to be depended on and tries to push down the shame of past mistakes that led him to be put in a desperate position, but when finally confronted with the reality of messing up again he hits rock bottom hard and fast as he regresses back into that fear of failure. I think Dae-Ho has to have a heroic moment coming up(especially when confronted with the fact that Jung-bae, someone he looked up to as a marine, is dead), and that would also fall in line with the kind of character arc Tatto had.
      But yes, he lacks any muscle memory for sure. Not that every trauma comes out the same, but I think comparing other characters with ptsd like Gi-Hun can give us an idea of how the writers handle those kinds of mental states. I think there have definitely been hints that his story is fishy (personally, I was doubtful from the start when he was quick to kinda brag about being a marine) but not so much that he's suffering from trauma. If it were combat based, then we dont see an extreme reaction at any time during the show until they rebel. Gunfire has been around him like crazy, but he handles it just as well as everyone else- if not better.

    • @PixelForThought
      @PixelForThought  2 дня назад

      @Wandervenn I totally agree with you, and that’s a great comparison with Kodai Tatta from Alice in Borderland! Their arcs really do have a similar vibe-young, eager, trying to overcome their past mistakes, but crumbling when faced with the weight of failure again. I’m with you on Dae-Ho having a heroic moment coming up, especially after Jung-bae’s death. That kind of redemption arc would fit perfectly with what we’ve seen from characters like him.

    One thing that doesn't sit right with me, and actually feels somewhat out of character, is Gi-hun not warning the other people who wanted to leave that the other team would probably attack them. He did say something along the lines of "we can't attack first, because that's what the game organizers want", but warning them could've saved some of them. Besides, the people who want to stay have absolutely no incentive to help him in his revolt, so why sacrifice those who could help as a mere distraction?

    • @PixelForThought
      @PixelForThought  2 дня назад

      That’s a great observation. Gi-hun’s obsession with stopping the games blinds him to not just his own well-being, but also to the people around him-like his daughter and even the other players. It’s like his hatred for the games and the system overtook his usual empathy, leading him to make decisions that ultimately hurt others who could have been allies. It really highlights how the games manipulate even the most compassionate people into losing sight of themselves and others.

    I heard that the writer or creator of squid games made season 2 so he could make more more off of it. He was basically ripped off by the initial deal trying to get it green lite in Hollywood and is now trying to get some cash. If you see the flaws of squid games season two it makes sense that the writing was rushed. Having two characters that are cowards and was too afraid to help their partners was redundant. Having characters kill in the first red light green light game and not know about the idea that death brings in more prize money was stupid because the viewers know this but the contestants don’t and he was allowed to don drugs in the games openly. It just felt like the writing had too many flaws in it and was Americanized

    • @PixelForThought
      @PixelForThought  7 часов назад

      I get where you're coming from, and I think some of your points about Season 2 are valid. It’s true that the creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, faced a lot of challenges getting Squid Game off the ground initially, and there’s no doubt the show’s massive success has opened up opportunities for him to capitalize on its popularity. That said, I don’t think the flaws in Season 2 necessarily mean it was rushed or purely a cash grab.
      The drug use aspect might feel out of place at first, but it could also be seen as a deeper commentary on how the games themselves and the promise of money give the players an addicting rush. In this way, the drug use could symbolize how the system preys on their vulnerabilities, turning them into addicts not just to substances, but to the twisted promise of wealth.

    One more game no more no less. One more game, one more game, one more game.
    This really put it into perspective view of how greed, gambler's fallacy and gambling culture (crypto currency, sports betting and debt culture) has ruined humanity's care for each other. It's not just greed some people really have no means of getting money to pay off predatory loan sharks that want live organs from people, same loansharks and gangsters have lost humanity by being so cruel. Money in this season really brought the worst in people. I guess the same would have happened in the first season. Gi Hun can't let go of his hatred for the games played because he really doesn't believe he was lucky to win, which in honesty luck saved Gi Hun and the people around him. However at the very least Gi Hun sees the games as what they really are predators that prey on desperate people, as much as they are people that are willing to play the games it would be a lie to say that they aren't harming people for the sick enjoyment of the rich. Johnny Silverhand in a video game says alot about this. Capitalism has gone out of control cause if people are really desperate they are willing to play these games even if they are guaranteed to leave with something they want more even if more means people will died. Some people argue that Gi Hun could have bought them all off but considering that many of them would gamble, crypto gamble and take out loans they would likely go back to the games. Another thing is what happened to the other winners of the games, Gi Hun is overcome with survivors guilt and hatred but what about the other winners that played have they reacted like Gi Hun or like the Frontman

    • @PixelForThought
      @PixelForThought  2 дня назад +1

      @asavelakuse6865 That's a really deep perspective. The games truly highlight how predatory systems like gambling, loan sharks, and debt culture prey on desperate people. It's not just about greed, but how desperation warps people's decisions and humanity. Gi-hun's survivor's guilt and hatred for the games really emphasize this-he sees them for what they are: a cruel tool of the rich to exploit the poor.
      It’s such a tragic commentary on how capitalism and desperation push people into inhumane or bad choices. Like the rationalization of turning to crime to support your family, seeking opportunities that seem impossible to find anywhere else.
      I also wonder what happened to the other players. Maybe they also were also "invited" to come work for the games. Similar to the Frontman, they must have been offered something so enticing, like power or wealth, to stay and work for the games. Other winners may have also spoken out against the games and been silenced.
