Today I want to look at how Squid Game creates choices for the characters and how choices can show the audience who your character is and what they believe.
This is why you should study Squid Game.

I highly disagree with you assesment of the tug of war game and the main characters winning due to 'plot armour ' and then 'not losing anything'. The weaker team are forced to use smarts and ruthless tactics to defeat their stronger opponents, which results in them being directly responsible for the deaths of other players for the first time in the show (something which affects the main characters' attitudes and decision making going forward).

    • @gibberscrabst321
      @gibberscrabst321 2 года назад +29

Came to say the same thing. The tug-of-war game was the standout for me because it put the heroes in a position where they had to overcome tremendous odds and win, but directly faces the consequences of winning at the expense of the tremendous suffering of their opponents. This absolutely aligns with the philosophy of the show and further tests their beliefs as the show continues.

@@gibberscrabst321 I up voted both comments.
I never thought about it as much as you both, but I'm confident that Tyler & the 2 guys were over thinking it. I think that it was more likely that the writers were just adding some action, where they showcased some character ingenuity instead of just brawn.

The main problem of most of reviewers even screenwriters is that they just follow what a book tells them or what they’ve learnt at film school. And sometimes this makes you look amateur or loose your audience.

Let’s remember that player 001 was a game master for years and wanted to prolong his experience in the game. This was his first but not last “interference” in the game.
He called off the night fights and faked a loss at marbles.
It’s part of the plot not plot armour.

Not related to the video, but it's kinda sad how quickly the attention to Squid Game went away despite being Netflix's biggest success and how good it really is, glad to see it being talked about again, especially with the sequel coming soon too.

show was very linear, killed the "main characters" in the most stupid ways and the last 2 episodes forced me to forget the entire show because I'm not proud of myself wasting 8 hours on that

I didn't see any of the hype, I also agree how quickly ppl move on to the next, must be the way we live as in "give me my next fix" kind of living to not have to feel bored or sad. Like those VIP's , we want to be entertained

To be fair, the consequences of the Tug of War game is that they crippled their team.
They wouldn't need to brainstorm a niche strategy if they had picked stronger players, but they also wouldn't have been able to do so without the wisdom of their weakest player.

I love the final scene in the ending of Squid Game because Gi-hun’s choice is gonna have lasting effects, it makes sense story-wise, and it also makes a lot of sense thematically. Kay and Skittles has a good video about it if you wanna check it out, as I think it’s their only Squid Game video currently.

Also another thing is that Sang Woo knows that he cannot easily become attached to the other contestants, since he would not feel the weight of his defeats.
Because after all, this is a game where lose means death. Everyone is gonna die anyway.
And that's the thing. We get easily attached with these characters, and when they die, we feel THE WEIGHT of their defeats.
Also in episode 5, when they're about to win, we see how Gi Hun looks at the other team side.

I feel like plot armor and plot holes are two very misunderstood things by a lot of people surprisingly. The tug of war wasn't plot armor because they decided on and executed a specific strategy that paid off. If you look around online then you can find plenty backing up the tug of war strategy that these characters used. They outsmarted the other team rather than just getting lucky or by some random fortunate coincidence. Plot armor is closer to Deus Ex Machina (a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly resolved by the inspired and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability or object), ... where a character survives a danger by sheer luck or coincidence.

  • @paloma8423

Great points, but I don't think Gi-hun's team wins because of plot armor; them winning is justified within the story through the strategy they use, and I can suspend my disbelief for it. They only need to resort to strategies like that in the first place because of the physical disadvantage their team is at

Since we're here, at Korean TV shows, I wanna ask you if you've ever watched "Hotel del Luna". I've watched it 6 times since it's release and tried to analyze and understand it better and better, for my pure curiosity but also with the wish to become a better storyteller too.
The story, structure, characters, everything is phenomenal in my opinion and for me is the best series to date.
As you said in this video, characters are defined by their choices and that's the case in that tv show too. Through the series, te main character gets to know the stakes but needs to make a choice that would impact his life, that's one of the main points why I like this drama.
If you watched it, or plan to watch it, it would be really nice to see a video on this!
