    If I'm not mistaken, one could also use method say (c) --> find KL as you had done = 15' and go to table 4-1 and grab the value of 555 kips for the W10X60 section. (that table is pretty limited, only W10 W12 & W14 about weak axis though)

      That's what I did, gives a close value of 555 kips.

      Yes, u r right, Actually we have 3 methods in order to find Design Compressive strength!

    FYI, one concept left out is the slenderness ratio. If you aren't sure which is the weak axis, calculate the KL/r ratio for both r(x) and r(y). The larger value governs.

    In the FE manual 10-1, the formula changed to Lc/r from KL/r but there was a note that said Lc = KL. What is Lc exactly and why did they change it that way?

      Hello, I hope studying is going well! I just want to let you know that I am still doing the "Problem a day series" on Patreon, www.patreon.com/enGENIEer. You can also ask me what kind of questions you would like to see next on patreon. There are already two questions that I have posted so far exclusively for my patreon supporters and a video on topics you should focus on for Geotechnical engineering. I hope you enjoy it, thank you 😊 and good luck!

    There are problems in the FE review manual where if you use the chart you will get a completely different answer. Which way are we supposed to use to ensure we get the right value?

    Correct me if I'm wrong
    I think this question was bit incomplete becasue fy was not given which can be diffrent for different grade of steel. Using Fy to be 50 ksi would be just assumtion considering limited information on the FE refrence book.

    • @Genieprep
      @Genieprep  2 года назад +1

      Hi, thank you for watching and that's a great question. So on the FE exam, if they don't give you Fy, you should use 50 ksi since all the tables on the reference handbook specify that Fy is 50ksi. If it's not 50ksi, then they would provide the value for Fy in the question. I hope this helps 😊and keep up the good work!
