The Rincon is the most versatile shoe I’ve ever used. Recovery, tempo, race and I’ve had no issues after 200 miles. The shoe has worked for me at really slow speeds and pushing the pace while providing excellent cushioning. I disagree with a few points: You said the shoe doesn’t have “pop” however pushing the pace the shoe has great rebound and responsiveness for its cushioning. The problem is people are starting to compare these and other shoes to ones with carbon fiber plates and of course they will not be as snappy as those designed for it. The Rincon is had a wider toe box than other hokas and has been praised by my other friend runners with wider feet. The durability seem to have most of its wear during the first 25 miles of use but after 200 it doesn’t seem to have gotten any worse after that first initial wear on my pair. This shoe also has the most minimal meta-rocker than any other hoka I’ve used. The reason hoka uses thin insoles is because of the amount of foam you get underfoot, it doesn’t need any extra in my opinion.
Hey bro, I'm new in this running shoe thing. I just buy any shoe as long it's a running shoe. But I do need new one, because usually when I running down the road, at the corner my feet felt uncomfortable during the turning. Do have any suggestion any shoe that will solve my issue? Thanks!
Hoka Napali was good all around for me. Very similar to the Rincon which I just had my first run in. I have 267 miles on the Napali’s and am 200lb novice runner. They did start showing outsole wear early, but did not impact the ride for me. They got me to sub-2 hour half marathon. I have a slightly wider foot, and while I would love another 2-3 mm in the forefoot, Rincon don’t bother me while running.
Watch the channel on my iPhone/iPad most the time. YT is certainly the future. Most versatile shoe so far has been the NB Beacon but I started rotating in the Rincon’s last week and I have to say, my feet feel great. Love the extra cushion without the weight. Hoping it keeps me healthy for my first marathon later this year - the CA Invitational Marathon. Props for your family/fan balance! Keep true love happy! Kids spell love T-I-M-E and I know you live it. All the Best Seth! 👌
Most versatile I've ever run in, for me, was last year's Pegasus 35. When I got that shoe, I went quite a few months doing EVERY run in it regardless of distance or speed. It just seemed to work well no matter what I was doing.
I'm 6 hours North from you Seth right now, yeah the Heat been terrible it's been 90 degrees the last two weeks with a 90% humidity. So I freeze in the winter and die in the summer lol. I hope you have a great time Seth! That shoe is a great price on running Warehouse. I think you sold the shoe to me. I'm definitely going to purchase it.
100% agree with your analysis SJD. I laughed about the insole, because I thought the same thing. Yeah, my Rincon shows substantial wear after 34 miles. However, it is my most versatile shoe!!
Welcome to Chicago! And yes, it’s crazy hot and humid here. I look to find a shady, wooded trail for these kind of days. Mostly I watch on the big TV- love your videos! Brooks Ghost is my versatile shoe, works for my foot shape.
SJD - thanks for saying that about light daily trainers and durability! It's amazing how many reviewers complain about that and then when a company makes updates to improve they complain about the added weight (can't make this stuff up!). Lightweight shoes are made to last 300 or 400 miles - it's common sense. At least this one only costs $115. Most versatile: Nike Turbo.
QOD: The Rincon for sure! I’m not as fast as you but have had no problem using it for 9:00/mile recovery runs down to 5:35/mile (my 5K pace) 600m intervals. It’s a bit squishy for races, so I’m only using it as a trainer. I haven’t had any durability issues, but then again, I never have that problem with any shoe. My Razor 3 has 170 miles and the wear is barely visible. (Perhaps I am doing something wrong? ☺️)
Peg 36 is great for everything but i’ve used the beacon for an entire track season and it was great, used it for long runs and even workouts sometimes, probs better options for faster type stuff but the beacon did pretty well
This is an amazing shoe! Only thing I can think of that's a negative: they wear rather quickly. That wide platform also decreases the concussive forces on your legs as it distributes the impact over a greater area. These shoes save my legs
Favorite shoes were Acics Nimbus 15 Lite Show and Kinvara 9. ASICS was heavy but lasted a long time. Kinvara was very light but wore quickly. I think the Rincon and Beacon would be two to alternate with. Another possibility would be the Revel 3 for price point although slightly heavier and the the fact the drop went from 12 down to 8. If they change the drop on the Ghost from 12 to 8 I think would be a good move for Brooks.
Picked up the Rincon yesterday and put in 3 miles. First impression is this shoe is light and comfortable on the landing. This is my first Hoka. I was on the fence about it since I envision my Epic React Flyknit can do all the same things. I must say the Rincon has more stability then the Reacts but I think the Reacts does a better job of rebound and the upper is better in terms of feel and lockdown. I’ll definitely need more time behind the Rincons to see how versatile these shoes are. Keep up the good work on the reviews!
I have 100 miles on my Rincons. I purchased some Shoe Goo to take care of the outsole wear and some Dr. Scholls inserts because the inserts that come with the Rincons are useless.
Even when the midsole starts breaking down, you have loads of life left in them. I've seen so many destroyed hokas that are still as comfy to run as the first wear
Seth, I definitely watch you more than less on my TV. Definitely a sign of the times and I definitely appreciate higher quality, well lit vids (like yours). Also, I have the sound coming through a soundbar etc... so good sound a plus too. On the Rincons, I love the idea of the shoe but Hokas seem to be at the bottom of the list for value ($/mile). I can't justify $115 for a shoe I'm only going to get 150 easy miles out of. I've got 450 miles out of an Odyssey React and 300+ out of Beacons so exposed midsole or my weight/gait doesn't seem to be the issue. I'm going to be super interested to see how the Skechers GoRun Ride 8 Hypers wear if we are looking at value 8oz shoes for pulling the daily miles.
QOD: most versatile shoes I’ve ever had was an older version of the new balance 1500, the cushion was perfectly balanced in terms of support and comfort so even though it was technically a racing flat that was great for speed work and tempo stuff, I took that shoe on 12 mile long runs and everything in between back in my high school cross country days.
Thank You Seth for the review I think I will give Hoka a chance and get the Rincon QD: The Nike Turbo v1 , I have 530 miles on them and I have used them for long runs , tempo and easy runs
I've been looking for reviews. Best review for a shoe yet. Great job. Also, to answer your question if you still read comments. I have a desktop attack to my TV. Wife and 3 children love it. 70% of our RUclips watch time is probably watched on it.
Just ordered the Clifton 6. Should be coming in this Friday just in time for a 7 miler. Here is a trail running vid I did with the brooks Ghosts. Great shoes
QotD Based on number of miles done I’d say the Adidas Adios 3 is the most versatile shoe I own. I’ve run fast and slow in them and done up to half marathon (so far) in them without any issues. They seem to strike a reasonable balance (for me) between cushioning and weight
My Rincons have done over 1000 miles everything from 5k races to 15 miles. The outsoles are fine with a thin layer of Shoe goo on the soft bits and a nub on the high durability areas. The uppers are still perfect and I machine was them every 14 days. 10/10!
@@jibroniuk3604 Hi.Now I'm starting to doubt myself! I got them Start of August 2019 and have done 10 miles Wednesday and 15 miles(with a Parkrun in the middle) on Saturdays. Also some 5 milers when my Challengers are wet. So a more truthful mileage would be 600! Sorry! Thanks for calling me on it! I'll let you know when I get to 1000!
Ken Mcclean - no problem at all. Thanks for the update. 600 miles is still impressive. Note that 600 miles is still the equivalent of 1,000 kilometres!
I watch all your vlogs on a big screen using Roku. Always looks awesome on a big screen and now my entire family looks forward to watching your vlog daily.
The most versatile shoe I owned was the Brooks Pure Flow 6. I got it on sale at £50, wasn’t sure at first but stuck with it. Managed to do 10k and 5k pbs in it, and also it was perfect for the marathon of Ironman Wales. Loved the shoe and wore them into the ground!
Received mine today, and went for a recovery run. They run quite narrow in the midfoot I must say. I'm totally fine with the flimsy insole, I usually get rid of them anyway to increase volume, but it's not necessary with the Rincon's thin insole. Also, mine are glued to the last quite firmly. Removing them would rip them apart, I guess, not to mention the nasty sticky last the glue would leave. Most versatile shoe: Hands down the Turbo. Roomiest shoe Nike ever built, and the most Zoom X cushion (according to solereview's cutting them in half) is right in the sweet spot under the midfoot. Edit: Upper is really pliable and has molded to my foot shape after 50k very nicely. I don't notice the narrow midfoot anymore, even though I am a bit sore on my left foot's lateral side. The narrowness, mind you, is only in the upper, the shoe's platform itself is very wide, as usual with Hokas, providing a very stable ride. Should my feet not develop any repetitive issue due to the midfoot fit, I think they surpass the Turbos, which are too soft for the late stages of a long run, where that plush ride robs you of energy.
Last year and this year sincerely enjoy the Clifton 5 & 6. Now you have me interested in the Rincon! Thanks for the terrific review. 10 years ago; early model Saucony Kinvara’s. Safe travels home!
I ran two marathons in a pair of Kinvara 7s, but I did add Spenco insoles to them before the second one. About 550 km on them so far and they’re still OK for a shorter run, 10 km or less.
QOD: Hoka Clifton 3s, bought on sale in November 2017 and only retired in April. Took me from 5k to half marathon and I used them as trail shoes as well as road shoes! When I came to replace them of course the 3s were obselete and I couldn’t find my crazy Sasquatch size (U.K. women’s size 10!) They had turned into the 5s, which I was warned was a totally different shoe, so instead I tried the Bondis, but started with arch pain, which escalated until I put myself into a supoort shoe. Long story short, now I wear Saucony Hurricanes and love them! 8mm is such an unusual drop but it’s what my foot loves. Can’t tolerate a 10 or 12 at all though!
My most versatile shoe has to be the Saucony Freedom ISO 2. I've gone long miles in it and even done a threshold ladder of 200-800 meters and it felt amazing. Only difference I would make is to go down a half size.
I know this post is old but for the QD: the most versatile shoe I’ve ever run in is the Adidas Ultra Boost 19, I took it from 5k races to the Marathon, and from the track to trails, and it held up very well, I ran over 550 miles and they still have the cushion my feet like.
I’ve used the Roku app and smart TVs to view RUclips for a long time now. Just gotten used to creators referring to links to click here and there or the comments below that don’t exist in the format I’m viewing. Using my iPhone app for this comment. Keep up the good work Seth!!
Hi Seth, At 5:49 you can see your right ankle isn't collapsing in as much the other day in the Nikes Zoom fly at about 3mins in. Maybe it's the wider mid-foot in the Rincons or higher stack height in the Zoom flys causing it. Just something to keep an eye on and keep you injury free!
New Balance Vazee Prism V1, which was basically a moderate stability version of the Vazee Pace. Responsive, lightweight, stable, durable, and also fast when needed. Totally a sleeper!
Probably not a very popular answer, but my favourite versatile running shoe of all time is the Mizuno Wave Rider 20. I did everything in them, from 5k races to slow training runs, to running a marathon. Recent versions haven't been anywhere near as good unfortunately.
I want to add that both Rincon and Carbon X are good shoes (I've tried them both on all sorts of training) - but one major weakness of them both is that due to the hollowed-out sole/bottom of the shoe, wet dirt tends to get stuck in it, and that makes the shoe very heavy. So I definitely recommend to avoid using them on wet surfaces other than road/track!
Hank Mancil obviously I know that, but in Europe it’s often dirt/small gravel on the pavement, plus some of us cross dirt or gravel roads during our road runs. It’s just something I wanted to make people aware of, as many sometimes use road shoes for mixed surface runs
The most versatile shoe that I've ran in is the Brooks Adrenaline. I used that shoe through out college as a speed day, distance, and tempo shoe and would swap between the two pairs I had. Now a days I'm back down to one pairs of Adrenaline since I'm not doing as many miles as I did in college. Also I just picked up the Hoka Rincon today after my work shift at Boulder Running Company since I was able to get a seed from Hoka. I'll pry test it on my next run and see how they do compare to my Adrenalines.
BryanO82 I agree I don’t like my ride ISO’s at all compared to the 10’s. Feel so flimsy in the upper with the isoskeleton rubbish. Looking forward to trying the Hoka
Been out in a 15 mile run tonight with new rincon. 5k at threshold 6:15 a mile pace, nice cushioning - feel plush but narrow in toe box, hot spots on inside of foot by big toe knuckle and both outer little toes blistered! So not convinced yet. Felt good for slower miles but not as good as Saucony Ride 10s when increasing speed
Steve Haley I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Ride. Sounds like a good all round shoe. I’ve read that a lot of good things are coming out from Saucony in 2020.
Altra torin 3.5 was my most versatile. Well balanced, good cushion (enough for some trails too), comfy, light weight. Only issue was the tread wearing out and ultimately getting slippery in wet conditions
Adidas Boston 6 / 7. You can put this shoe through anything: tempo/easy/races. Best every day trainer: Hoka Mach. Very light weight, lots of soft cushion-love the Mach but I wouldn’t race in it or use for faster workouts.
Hi seth very informative vlog as per usual but I have a question for you, how do you think orthotics would work in the rincon? I know you don't use orthotics so but I'd love to hear your thoughts
Most versatile I would have to say Adidas Boston racer. Can handle any pace you throw at it with enough pop on race day even. I saw some people mention theNike Pegasus line, which is a very close second for me
I would say that Nike Pegasus is pretty versatile. Before the Turbo was launched Mo Farah used to do all his training runs (except those workouts when he wore spikes) in Pegasus. He is saying that he gets a fresh pair every third week and keeps running in the same shoe everyday. I have a friend, a 2:30 marathon runner who also wears only Pegasus for training. He races in Vaporflys but does all training from intervals to long runs in Pegasus. He has had 10-15 pairs in past couple of years. I've also done all type of runs in the Peg 35 and think that it can be used for everything. It's a workhorse. For me, 2019... I would say the Hoka Rincon. If I would travel, I would take only one pair and that would be the Rincon. It's a fun shoe to run and great for summer because of the thin upper. In addition to that it's light, i.e. good for baggage regulations and you can wear it for everything. So I would manage to be somewhere for a week or two and run in Rincons. During the first 150K I've worn it twice for a long run but also twice for track workouts and it's kind of okay for everything. However, it's a little bit too soft for softer tracks like Novotan. It's not easy to pick up the pace if you want to run fast but if you want to cruise more easily, then it's okay. Of course there are better options for track workouts but because I test the shoes for the readers I need to wear each pair in different environments during the 500 miles. I did for example Tinman's critical velocity training on track in Rincons and it went fine. Brooks Launch is also that kind of a shoe. I should test the new version next. Have had the previous versions but not the newest one. Btw, tempo run is the lactate threshold run. It's the speed that you can maintain for an hour (compared to the critical velocity that you can maintain for 30 minutes). Mostly I do only 20 minutes tempo runs like Daniels, Pfitzinger and other coaches recommend but closer to a marathon, I increase the distance a bit. Uptempo is slower and then the distance is longer. Sage Canaday is also doing quite a lot uptempo runs because they are a little bit slower than the marathon pace and then the body recovers more quickly. Coaches like Renato Canova - who coached Sondre Moen to break the European record - recommend to run a lot in that area which is about 92-108% of the marathon pace. Tempo run is faster and uptempo run slower.
Great review ! Been wondering if I should get a pair, but don't really need them until next summer so might just wait for a rincon v2 with better durability. And thanks for the text visuals in the video :)
The note about a viewer noticing your pinkie toe pushing out. I've worn my new Rincons for 2 short runs and the pinkie side of the ball of both feet feel bruised once I take the shoes off. I was a loyal Clayton and Clayton 2 person and I noticed the outsole of those styles actually have a small buildup there. The Rincon does not (and neither do the Machs). Contrary to your comment, I do not have wide feet or a wide forefoot. I'm a AA/AAA in dress shoes. But, I also need a shoe with a straight last or very minimal semi-curve last. These seem to curve right at that pinkie point, causing the rubbing.
QoD: I don't know why, but the Asics Dynaflyte (Original) was VERY versatile for me. I was able to run long runs in it, even though I was only in 8th grade so they were only 7-8 miles, and I was also able to do 400m intervals at 5:20 pace! They really felt nice to me.
Thansk for the great vid....Just bought a pair of Rincons so will see how they go, the best shoes I had ever were Nike Terra TCs and then WAY more recently Saucony Guide ISO 2's were a nice mix of stability and (relative) speediness
QOD: The Hoka Clayton 2 (esp the Kona version) was an amazing shoe for me for racing, daily training, track workouts, etc, and especially good for treadmills. I ran my first sub-20 5ks in them as well as my first few HMs. They are not the very best shoes I've ever used but certainly the most versatile, with the Hoka Huaka coming in not far behind. I've found other shoes like the Clifton or Vaporfly more specifically suited to particular kinds of running.
Back in the day the most versatile for me was the Mizuno Wave which i had back at version 6. The overall comfort (back then) exceeded my Salomon's so i'd also use it for my longer trail runs too.
Found some La sportiva ultra raptor gtx on ebay at 80$+shipping -these have a retail price here in Norway at 180-210$. It's a US seller -and they are New. Is there a chance these are real ones Seth? Let me know your thoughts! Thanks
Hello friend, an important question. I have a question is that I am a treadmill pronator and I use orthopedic template and I want to know if I should use the orthopedic template with this Hoka Rincon model. I have the Hoka carbon x and I do not need to use orthopedic templates because it is very stable.Thank you very much and best regards

Same with the Brooks but since they discontinued I went to the Kinvara (3 pair) . Looking at these now...
QD: Kinvara for me. But I've only taken it as high as 12 mi. I've gotten all my race PRs in them, and they don't beat you up at all as a trainer.
The challenger series from Hoka are the most versatile shoes I've had, version 3 in particular.
BOOM! Great eye and I appreciate this YT family watching those ankles, will continue to monitor.
Brooks Ravenna 9’s and Ghost 12’s are pretty great versatile shoes that I’ve had recently:)
I always watch you on a Samsung 50" TV with the family after work 5pm UK time and ur videos always looks fab !!!!!
Me too :)
The New Balance Fuel Cell Rebel is quickly rising up my all-time versatility list. Seem happy at any speed.
Christina Forsberg they are a road shoe. Not trail.
Hank Mancil obviously I know that, but in Europe it’s often dirt/small gravel on the pavement, plus some of us cross dirt or gravel roads during our road runs. It’s just something I wanted to make people aware of, as many sometimes use road shoes for mixed surface runs
The Brooks ST Racer has been a very versatile show for me. Trained and raced marathons in it.
QD: Adidas Supernova. Great cushion, can go semi-fast or slow speeds, run on roads or dry trails, great stability, amazing daily trainer.
Democratic Republic of Chük love this shoe!
Welcome to humidity in Ga this morn it was 89% at 7am.
Most versatile shoe Kinvara 6 they changed from there
Saucony Ride 10’s been my favourite. Rincon arriving Monday so will see how they compare 👌🏻 thanks Seth, loving your channel
I had 3 x Ride10, the Rise ISO were awful, but I love my Rincon. Enjoy
Yes on my TV, superb quality, love your mountain videos, keep up the great work
My most versatile shoe was the Saucony Liberty ISO. Make me a fan on the brand for sure
QD: I think I've gotten the most out of the Saucony Ride series, they do a good job at keeping the cushioning balanced between plush and responsive.
Steve Haley I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Ride. Sounds like a good all round shoe. I’ve read that a lot of good things are coming out from Saucony in 2020.
@@emcinc9654 yeah, I'm thinking about getting a pair of Ride's or Kinvara's for speed workouts during the xc season.
The most versatile running shoe that I have owned was the Brooks Launch 6
Thanks Seth, your reviews are great. Best on youtube. Keep up the good work!
Altra torin 3.5 was my most versatile. Well balanced, good cushion (enough for some trails too), comfy, light weight. Only issue was the tread wearing out and ultimately getting slippery in wet conditions
Altra Ecelante very versatile. I just ordered the Ricon.
Adidas Boston 6 / 7. You can put this shoe through anything: tempo/easy/races. Best every day trainer: Hoka Mach. Very light weight, lots of soft cushion-love the Mach but I wouldn’t race in it or use for faster workouts.
Yeah the weather up here in the Midwest has been rough recently.
It’s cliche but Brooks Ghost. I’ve tried several Saucony and Hoka models but the Brooks Ghost is the best shoe I’ve run in.
which model?
Be Different Fee ghost
Hi seth very informative vlog as per usual but I have a question for you, how do you think orthotics would work in the rincon? I know you don't use orthotics so but I'd love to hear your thoughts
I have used the Mizuno Wave Inspire 14 for absolutely everything from 16 mile long runs to 5k races.
Brilliant
Most versatile I would have to say Adidas Boston racer. Can handle any pace you throw at it with enough pop on race day even. I saw some people mention theNike Pegasus line, which is a very close second for me
Excellent 👍🏻👍🏻 I did not think of the Boston but I think it’s intriguing for sure in this discussion
Need to run colab with Kofuzi- make it happen!
Love ya Seth, and thank you for all that you do bro!
New Balance Beacon 1 has been most versatile. Excited to get the 2
I would say that Nike Pegasus is pretty versatile.
Is it comparable with the beacon?
Hope that you meet with kofuzi! 😊
Thanks for yet another great review! Hoka Rincon
Great review ! Been wondering if I should get a pair, but don't really need them until next summer so might just wait for a rincon v2 with better durability.
And thanks for the text visuals in the video :)
Yes I love watching your channel on TV. Cos your production quality is so good, it's so TV worthy
Just stumbled across your channel and am learning a lot from your videos!
QD: Nike Pegasus Turbo.
Been using a big screen for a monitor for years. Used to having a keyboard on my coffee table.
Good note here, thanks for the insight and for watching the channel, I appreciate it
QD: zoom fly flyknit was my most versatile running shoe
QoD: I don't know why, but the Asics Dynaflyte (Original) was VERY versatile for me. I was able to run long runs in it, even though I was only in 8th grade so they were only 7-8 miles, and I was also able to do 400m intervals at 5:20 pace! They really felt nice to me.
Thansk for the great vid....Just bought a pair of Rincons so will see how they go, the best shoes I had ever were Nike Terra TCs and then WAY more recently Saucony Guide ISO 2's were a nice mix of stability and (relative) speediness
Does the Chicago humidity feel more challenging than Denver altitude?
YES!!! Insanity.
Haven’t been running too long, but so far I think my most versatile shoe has been the Brooks Ghost 11. Not sure what distance I couldn’t run with it.
Yeah I agree I took out the insole and put one in from another shoe
The drop is 29-24. Hoka uses a bucket seat design for the heels of their shoes, so the outside is built up higher than the cushion below your foot.
Awesome review. I'm probably going to replace my Clifton 1's with the Rincon.
Which shoes have gotten 10/10 from you?
I just bought some Hoka slides. Not sure if i should go down a size. I have some room in front and back. Your thoughts are appreciated
My most versatile vote would be for the Saucony Kinvara.
My most versatile running shoes are saucony kinvara 8, adizerojapan and NB beacon.
At 200 miles, the rincon is definitely tearing-get shoe though
(If you have tried the Clifton: the rincon is firm but feels great)
Pegasus hand down was my best all-round shoes
Back in the day the most versatile for me was the Mizuno Wave which i had back at version 6.
The overall comfort (back then) exceeded my Salomon's so i'd also use it for my longer trail runs too.
PS 'toe-heel' = moonwalk. Give us one of those Seth ;-)
Excellent review Seth ive just ordered these shoes as for the insole issue couldn't you use a pair out of another pair of shoes.
QOD: Pegasus line has been my most versatile but not my favourite if that makes sense. Not a great fast day shoe for me.
