- Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" was intended to be an indictment against unfair labor practices. It made a bigger wave in food safety reforms.

By the close of the Industrial Revolution, the American food supply was tainted with frauds, fakes, and legions of new and untested chemicals, dangerously threatening the health of consumers. Based on the book by Deborah Blum, The Poison Squad tells the story of government chemist Dr. Harvey Wiley who, determined to banish these dangerous substances from dinner tables, took on the powerful food manufacturers and their allies. Wiley embarked upon a series of bold and controversial trials on 12 human subjects who would become known as the “Poison Squad.” Following Wiley’s unusual experiments and tireless advocacy, the film charts the path of the forgotten man who laid the groundwork for U.S. consumer protection laws, and ultimately the creation of the FDA.
"Mary had a little lamb, and when she saw it sicken, she shipped it off to Packing town, and now it's labeled chicken"
The fact that his intended purpose was never to expose the conditions of sanitation in the meat packing industry makes me wonder what more actually went on that he didn’t talk of because it wasn’t his primary purpose.
Yes he was concerned with the living conditions of the migrants horrific living conditions living in Chicago working in the stock yards and meat packing companies
I just had a DBQ the other day and knowing the actual purpose actually did helped earn the sourcing point🤣
Oh, you mean like, they threw the beef carcasses away and just packed up rat carcasses because the rat infestation was so great... stuff like that?
Why?
Upton Sinclair was a Marxist. He organized “The Intercollegiate Socialist Society” (with the help of Clarence Darrow) in 1905. (Soon after it was renamed “The League of Industrial Democracy” (with John Dewey and Horace Mann becoming leaders of the LID.)
The agency quietly established to create on-campus Socialist student clubs on university campuses.
Once recruited into these clubs, they were planted into targeted careers which influence public opinion (teaching universities, schools of journalism, and library sciences, etc.). This would not happen overnight as Socialist professors on college campuses had to keep quiet about their Marxist values until after they attained tenure.
This is what I believe Sinclair was going for. The Jungle was his spotlight on labor and labor unions. But his intent went sideways when the public became alarmed by health hazards of the meat packing industry. …so Sinclair’s intended message got lost in the fray.
I remember (in middle school) that my English teacher had the class read this book with a surprise reward for all of us at the end. I remember it took us a few weeks to knock it out and he rewarded us with bbq hotdogs when we completed the book. He was one of those type of teachers. 😂
Hahaha ‘those’ types of teachers with memorable lessons are the best!
They’re usually the best types of teachers IMO
You mean the kind with an odd sense of humor? 😂

Read the book. This is only half of it. The book talks about a family from Lithuania that comes for better life but get swallowed up by the system like the pigs and cattle in packing houses. Jc
This book was depressing and grossed me out. Still one of the best book I have ever read. Didn't know he actually went undercover.
Sinclair book is fictional meaning not real plus he's a crack pot socialist
It was actually proven that he did not go undercover, except in the most nominal and limited way. Not sufficiently enough to have gathered a quantity of bona fide information needed to support his story.

The Jungle is such a great book. Even today.
I read ‘The Jungle’ when I was in my teens-50 years ago, it was a heartbreaking tale of the poor immigrants who helped build this country. It shaped my views on labor and management. I am pro labor, understand management and am not a bleatin’ ‘eart liberal.
And the fact we went FULL CIRCLE back to this 😢😢😢😢😢
Fast Food Nation, by Eric Shlosser told us again in 2006 but people still love to eat all those fast food burgers and fried chicken.
Unfortunately it is so cheap and easy to get, drive-through, home delivery and many people in cities who don’t have transport rely on it.

It was required reading in high school. For a book I read once, 40 years ago, I still remember huge chunks of it. Jurgis Rudkis was his name, if I remember correctly.
I seriously wouldn't be surprised to find out over the years what we've eaten as meat.

Cats
Dogs

best to avoid carnism as much as possible by living a vegan lifestyle
. It can be a shock !! 60 years ago, I went to an Alpine village festival for a few years while in boarding school. The sausage roll sandwiches were fantastic. 30 years ago was at a party when a professor talked about a book he wrote about unusual foods. He mentioned ones that would surprise anyone. Sure enough... this colorful innocent festival was serving a local delicacy... not advertised... of "puppy sausages". Those cute people in their quaint costumes... in of all places... Switzerland.

Powerful book.
The Jungle enraged Theodore Roosevelt when he read the book. So much so, he enacted Congress with a series of workplace reforms!

Unfortunately, bad products do get past the FDA, largely due to lobbying and budgetary restraints that result in far too few inspectors to be pro-active.

Monocrop agriculture is the single largest contributor to deforestation and global warming(climate change). Big Sugar and Big Pharma would love to employ your services. Afterall, they've been the two biggest frauds in terms of the health of this country. Look up Ancel Keys and his Seven Country Studies. Look at the demonization of cholesterol in the 70s from Big Sugar. The evidence is clear. Humans are obligate carnivores, but are also social animals. And we've been classicly trained to slowly poison ourselves through "food." We didn't get to be Apex Predators by consuming plants. In fact, no Apex Predator does. They all primarly(including 70% of the rest of the animal kingdom) eat other animals. And if you're a herbivore you can only eat specific plants. But hey! LET"S EAT EVERYTHING BECAUSE WE CAN. lol
Amputated fingers get mistaken for Vienna sausages. The killing floor. Men with knives carving up a writhing beast.

because of his book Sinclair got Teddy to sign off on legislation and by the end of that year The FDA was founded now all meat needs to be inspected before it goes in a reefer or it is illegal and needs to be rejected.
Sinclair did not know he helped found the FDA until Teddy himself saw what was going on and signed the FDA into law with the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act these two acts created the FDA and they are the law when it comes to food.
How hard is it to stay clean?
@J4sse
Pretty hard actually. When I was 19 I had a part-time job coming in and cleaning up a large butcher shop at night, and it was a freaking mess. Now imagine when a giant Corporation's profits depend upon whether or not you "waste" time cleaning up properly. It's always about the bottom line when it's a corporation involved. Got to pay them shareholders their maximum dividend checks. That's why this country is doomed.
