Granddaughter started nurse residency same time as you. Because of COVID She took nursing school on line and had minimum contact at a hospital. Her preceptor understood this and was very patient with her and another nurse. She will graduate from this program February 2022.
Jade, nurse residency programs were developed as an assistant to provide SUPPORT to the transitioning nurse. Research showed new graduates were leaving in DROVES from their first jobs within the first 3 months. When nurse residency programs came into play, the new nurses stayed. It’s ok that you didn’t like the program but I hope you gave constructive criticism as to how it could be improved. As a writer of a program myself, I am ALWAYS looking for suggestions on what wouldn’t be beneficial. Researching what others are doing, and I do mean researching, looking at studies, can only give so much info. Plz detail what things would better comprise a transition to practice program. Thanks
I’m in the same program and I tried to quit before my orientation was even over. 5 weeks is not enough. They extended mine for 2 more weeks but even after that I don’t think I’ll be ready and willing to stay. How did you survive 1 year? That’s all I’m trying to do is make it one year and get to a different floor because I signed a 2 year contract with HCA and have to spend one year on this med surg floor.
@@rimpleaggarwal2260 I got out after 10 months or so. I quit. I felt there wasn’t enough floor training too much classroom training considering we just got out of school. It all seemed a little unnecessary
I start my residency with HCA next Monday. But I’m nervous 😬 because I don’t think 5 weeks of preceptorship is enough. Could you explain maybe how it was for you with your preceptor? Did they just kinda observe or was it shadowing for the first couple days? Also we’re getting 5 weeks of the classroom setting, is this were they teach you how to chart? Any advice/tips are appreciated! I’m just trying to be prepared 😫.
Cecilia Nunez so for my preceptorship I think I shadowed the first day and then from there I started taking patients and I would increase the number of patients I had each day or every couple of days until I was taking care of all of them, at that point my preceptor would still be with me but I would be doing most of the care. During the classroom time they do teach you how to use the charting system which I did find super helpful! It at least somewhat prepares you and familiarizes you with meditech! I only remember my classroom time being 3 weeks I think but they teach you EKG strips, they review skills and they do simulations
@@904Kellyy Yes , I’m still with the hospital. But I plan on leaving when my year is complete , although I signed a two year contract. I will rather pay off that last year. I don’t really recommend StarRn, I would have rather had all 10 weeks on the floor rather than in the classroom. But girl I feel you, I wanted to quit my first month in. If you want to stick out for a year thats okay, if you rather leave thats okay too. Being a new grad nurse is hard as it is you don’t need a company/job making it harder.
@@cecyuribe8870 omg crazy that you say you’d rather the 10 weeks on the floor because that’s what me and the other nurses have been saying. Look into switching units or maybe going PRN to finish out the second year. They extended my orientation for two weeks and I had to send an email to management saying I quit in order for them to even offer that. So one thing I’m worried about is burning my bridges with HCA. If you break the two year contract will you still be able to be rehired by the company?
Im currently finishing my ADN and was wondering if doing a BSN online and doing a 1 year RN residency program manageable? The first semester of the BSN ONLINE is just 9 credits (so part time)

Hi Jade! Could you by any chance discuss if grades matter in looking for a job? as in will the employer ask for your transcripts, how much do grades really matter, etc? I just did my first written assignment in nursing school and I thought I'd at least get a high credit, and I got barely a pass - a grand total of 58.9/100... oh to my terror. its so discouraging and since I know nursing employment can be really competitive especially to new grads.. can you provide some advice or discuss about this topic, please? thank you.
Mary Geniusz no you don’t have to do a residency, you can apply for any position! For me it was just easier to get a job through a residency program because they specifically hire new grad nurses!
@@marygeniusz6929 if a large hospital won’t accept you for residency, go to a small one and do an online residency, like Iowa online. Chk into tuition reimbursement at that hosp to help with cost

Was your nurse residency not paid?
It was paid! I made them same hourly that I did when I started on the floor, besides the shift differential

Could you make a video on your RN to BSN bridge experience 😁

Does successful completion of a residency program usually result in a full time job with that hospital?
Thanks this video helped out a lot !! :-)
That does sound completely different than what I did. I got my associates at a community college.
David Robinson so did I!
