It is a big fish in a small pond (New Zealand) New Zealand is still a pretty small country and MMA gyms are fairly limited. Its only natural that the best coaches and fighters might start congregating around a particular gym based on previous successes. -The gym gets a bit of popularity -it gets good fighters/trainers -it has successes -it gets more popular -it has more and more successes -it attracts better fighters/trainers - it gets more popular etc... and becomes self perpetuating. There is no secret sauce. There is nothing in the water. It is pretty much NZ's unofficial MMA national gym Imagine if all the good fighters in USA started congregating around 1 gym?
Australia, New zealand, Thailand, Indonesia (generally Australasia region) are home to most of the worlds best kickboxers, it's just taken a bit of time for some of those guys to start moving into the mma scene. That's why you see such a dominant standup game from citykickboxing fighter's. The fighting gyms for boxing/kickboxing are all over the area, it was just a matter of time before one of them decided to branch into mma.
This comment is the reason that new Zealand is full with kickboxing and thai boxing world champions American mma is years behind new Zealands stand up game and... a ufc fights start on your feet on the ground not with a cuddle
This is partially true, it is for sure the main gym in nz for mma professionals. But you cant compare it to if there was one main mma gym in usa, because they would be drawing from a far larger pool of fighters. It would be more similar to if all the best fighters in south carolina congregated to one gym (similar population to nz), and no way would that south carolina gym spit out as many champs and top level fighters as ckb. Their secret sauce at ckb IS their culture of work ethic, deep experience in kickboxing, and, IMO, the isolation/ lack of distraction. I agree that this is self sustaining, but it is still incredible coming from such a tiny place
All the good fighters is the US already have most of the good fighters congregating around a handful of gyms. Those gyms are ATT, AKA, and Hard knocks. I don't think this is the reason why CKB is doing so well right now considering NZ only has a quarter of the population of Florida.

For a lack of a better word, i called it lucky because the shot relied on adesanya to make the mistake, instead of any forward initiation from romero. idk maybe 'counter shot' would be better.
