I always enjoy watching you create journal covers. While you were struggling to get the first ones to wrinkle and crinkle I wondered what I had missed as to why you weren’t crumpling the papers before adhering to the cover today. 🤔🤣 Excited to see what these become some day! Have a blessed day!
Yes you can use PVA glue for this project. Mod Podge is a PVA glue it just has a sealer added to it. Most white glue is PVA, art glitter glue, Elmers glue, even wood glue, just look for polyvinyl acetate in the ingredients.
Hi Gayle. I had to laugh while you were doing your journal covers when you said they “you should have scrunched the paper first”. I was just getting ready to send this message to you about suggesting to you about scrunching the paper first.😂😂👍 Hope you have a blessed day and hugs t you always! Sue M.❤️😊😘🙏🏻🥰🌸❌⭕️
Thanks for doing faux leather journal covers again. The antiquing stain you use is so rich. It really captures the look of leather. I’ve been saving packing papers and can’t wait to give this a try. 😊
Hi Gayle! Nice to see you doing these covers again! I learned this technique by watching your original video a few years ago! Such a great cover and so versatile. Thanks for sharing this again. I went back and watched the original video again and it was fun seeing how you’ve grown in your teaching and how comfortable you are now. You were great then and even more so now! 💖💕Hugs!!
So, the other day I was mod podging something with my nice Tim Holtz brush. Left the item to dry and got busy making supper. This morning went in to drop something off in the craft room and what do I see? My item nicely mod podge, and my nice Tim Holtz brush also nicely mod podge. The brush was hard as a rock. Oops! 😂 I like how these covers were turning out. Lovely and fun as always, Gayle. Hugs! Sue ♥
Perfect timing of this video for me! I’m making a journal for my brother for his birthday and I think this is just what I need to do for him. Thanks so much!
Oh, how I love these covers. I want to make a few soon. I don't know how I missed this video back when you first posted it. Now, I just need to go buy envelopes. I have two rolls of the painter's masking paper and I have a big roll of the butcher paper (the heavy, darker paper you used). Thanks again for all the beautiful work you do. I know you inspire so many of us.
Years ago I did a similar leather look project using masking tape and shoe polish, and it really looked like leather. I love this idea, and plan on trying it too.
Good morning Gayle. This video could not have come at a better time. I made an altered journal for my daughter -in-law and was trying to figured out what to do with the cover. You nailed it for me. I have not done it before but I am going to give it a try. You are my paper crafting guru. Hugs.
I made a lot of paper leather last summer. I had found some matte medium, so I watered it down. Of course I didn’t wear gloves, thinking it would wash right off. WRONG. I was picking matte medium off my fingers for days. So back to watered down PVA. I ended up making mini-mini journals with coffee stained papers. They’re so cute I don’t want to give them away, but I’ll include in my Christmas cards. As always, thanks for sharing.
Good morning Gayle!! Love these journal covers. I am blessed to have 2 of your journals with this type of cover!! 🥰 Thanks for doing this again to refresh our inspiration. Have an awesome day...💜
I did this with my kids covering an old vase. Used brown shoe polish (paste type) and it turned out great. Sealed with water base sealer and still have it 45 years later.
This was a lot of fun watching how you made these covers, Gayle. Will definitely give this a try. So glad you had a good checkup. And, I wish I had your energy!!!😀
To answer the PVA glue question, yes ma’am you can, you just have to water it down. Two parts glue to one part water. It dries matte. There is no shine at all. I keep mine in a seal tight container. I’ve not had any problems with it molding or anything like that. 🥰
Nice Gayle. I bought PVA in an art supply store and it makes these covers quite stiff. On google they say this: What is the difference between glue and Mod Podge? Image result for mod podge Mod Podge is a step above craft glue in terms of the sealing properties. Mod Podge is glue, but it's also a sealer - and there are varnishes, etc. in the formula that don't exist in craft glues. The bonding properties of Mod Podge are way stronger than that of (most) craft or school glues. PVA seems to be a liquid plastic glue.
These make neat covers. I made a couple with a previous video of yours. Thanks for sharing! I think it's time to try it again. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Travel safe😍❤
Morning Gayle!! I love the different looks. I’m going to have to make a few up. Thank you for all you do and thank you for sharing this wonderful process with us. 💕🥰💕
iv been doing this for years on my journals, i sometimes make them look like the Hocus Pocus Book, so much fun! these look lovely Gayle :) id love to see a field notes style entomology journal in the dragonfly one ❤
Happy Monday gayle and yes you can use pva glue i get mine from works works just the same as mod podge just add a bit of water can be a bit thick sometime 😘
My friends mom was so proud when her grandson built a lovely “ga-zebra” in her garden. I haven’t seen a gazebo since without thinking of her and smiling.
Hi my friend Gayle I'm watching your new and old videos and finishing decorating my mushroom Christmas journal. Laughing at the old video where you cut the girls legs off and said "well she's not going anywhere" lol. Never gets old. As far as a fire goes I'd be freaking out about my craft room. Too much to replace. Hope you don't have to ever loose your home in a fire. God bless.
Oh Gayle, I know exactly what you mean about listing on etsy! I've never procrastinated so much in my life! I love these covers, haven't made them in awhile. Sometimes I like to add a touch of gold or copper to highlight a few of the creases. I'm going to rewatch the original video. Thanks for all you do!
You stained one and then modge podge it,. Then another one you put it on before the stain, I think. Which is the best. They are fantastic. Congrats to the grandkids.
Can't wait to see these finished. Have you thought of adding the melted wax like joie do fie does on some projects? I bet that would really add to the leather look too. These are so fun Gayle
I used pva glue watered down. And I rubbed hair conditioner over the item. It loosened the fibers and felt wonderful. Not sure where I saw that. Just so much fun to play with paper glue and scissors. Thanks for the videos.
So happy for the request to do a revisit on this type of cover. I am going to get busy before I forget how. Gayle you just make it look so easy. You are busy keeping us crafters inspired to keep a rolling on too. So happy for the girls to get 4th in state! That is a great accomplishment! I know your granddaughter is going to love the book of stats you and grandpa are making for her. How special that will be. Also Congrats on your craft room make over. It looks beautiful and seems to be working great for you! Take care and a very Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your family!
Wishing I was home already so I could make a bunch of similar covers. Dad and I are headed back to Virginia from visiting family in Plymouth, MA. I hope you have a marvelous Monday. Love&hugs
Loved the video ❣️ I think I will go see what I can scrounge up to make a few, thank you for the inspiration 💖 Have a blessed day. Hugs right back at you 🤗
Good afternoon Gayle! 💕 Saved this until I got home from dentist. 🦷 Seems I’m gradually falling apart as I age. 🙄 😁 Ohhhh… this is going to be a gooood messy Monday. 👍 Thank you for doing this again for us! I haven’t made faux leather yet, so this is much appreciated. Hope you’re having a great Monday! 💕
The red like masking paper is probably butchers paper. It’s a little heavier. Love these. I remember when you did the original video for these! That has been a hot minute!
Good morning Gayle My folks used to say "genuine an-ti-que" too. I think it's "a thang". I don't know it it's a midwest or east coast thing maybe. Have a great Monday.
I remember doing this when I was a kid and we used shoe polish for the brown leather look. Also, do you remember ever covering bottles with pieces of masking tape and then rubbing shoe polish on it. I don’t think that would work now because the masking tape today is smoother than it was back in those days. Seems like shoe polish was a common craft item for children back in the day, I love the smell of it.
The red, really it's pink, but anywho, it is butcher paper as well. alot of people use when they are smoking meats...I also when making faux leather covers wad it up first before putting it on cover
I loved these when you did them before so I went to Amazon to order some of the medium but the espresso is sold out. Oh well not like I’m going to be working on it any time soon 🙄. Thanks so much for sharing again 😊
Thank you so much, Ellen, for your gift through YT Super Thanks! I appreciate your support so very much! I absolutely love what I do and spending time with my YT crafting buddies! Your appreciation and support are received with a grateful heart. Thank you so much! Love and hugs to you! 🤗❤️
Wonderful covers! Love faux leather! Since you're an experienced crafter I'm being presumptuous, but if when you clip the corners you don't clip all the way to the corner of the envelop there'll be a bit (1/8") to cover the point of the corner. Then you won't necessarily need to glue the metal bits over the corner.
I agree, but I love the look of the corners and feel they make the cover more durable. Regardless of how you do the corners they will get the most wear and tear. 🤷🏻♀️❤️
Your arttrapaneur attitude is really inspiring me to do the same. If Gail can do an hour long video everyday well I can do 2 lives a week with four videos in between. I also have gotten on the affiliate bandwagon as well as Etsy cuz my mixed media canvases are piling up. Thanks for all your hard work and inspiration ❤😊 was wondering what kind of mod podge you’re using for this project? Thanks

Hi Gayle. You can use PVA glue in place of modpodge. I use it for my covers and for sticking tissue etc. Have a fabulous day.😊

The pegs that holds the shelves are crappy
I wonder if you was the heavier paper before you glue it if that would help?
Sorry about my delayed comment, I just need to watch all the way through instead of commenting throughout.😁
