      Mustard & Mayo i forgot to mention that the 85 has the 3A-U SOHC engine but the Sr5 U.S. Model has the 4A-C engine. so yeah.

      Man, if Itsuki wanted his car to sound as good as Takumi's, he's got to get the 12.000 rpm engine for himself, which is quite an expensive one. Perhaps he should ask Bunta if he still got the engine for him...

    The sr5 isn’t an 85, the 85 has a 3au sohc engine , and the sr5 has a 4ac sohc engine. Although they both might perform and sound the same, their engines are actually different.

    You skipped over the fact that the JDM/world spec AE85 has a less reinforced unibody chassis. That, to me, is the biggest difference besides the engine and rear end. For crash test safety, North America got the AE86 chassis (extra reinforcement) for the SR5/GTS trims.
    The AE86 in Japan was rated at 130ps, which is equal to 127hp. Toyota was often a bit optimistic by overrating their horsepower ratings on their cars back then. True, we got the California/SMOG spec 4AGE-C, but I honestly feel that there isn't very much horsepower difference between the USDM and JDM spec engines.

      the AE85 Have the 3A-C ( 1.5 ), Cable clutch not hydraulic T-50 transmission release, 6'' Rear diff, Less reinforced unibody and less interior trim option.
      So All exported market Sport E80 RWD Corolla are from the chassis AE86. USDM DX/SR5/GT-S EUDM SR/SR5/GT/GT-I.
      the AE85 is japan market only.

      I believe Australia officially got the 2-door Sprinter as an AE85 chassis. I've heard that anything that is true AE86 in Australia is a gray market vehicle imported from Japan.

    I own a JDM AE85, as stamped on the firewall, which is modified, and have owned a 100% standard one. As you have said:
    3AU Engine
    K50 Transmission with cable clutch(same as KE70 and KP6* starlet)
    S series rear end (same as KE70 and KP6* starlet)
    Drum rear brakes
    Solid front rotors
    Unbaffled fuel tank
    Obvious differences with the carb'ed engine (exhaust, fuel lines etc)
    Aside from JDM options such as Lisse spec, they all had tan and brown interiors with unbolstered seats.
    They came in all variations of Levin, Trueno, Hatch and Notchback (coupe). They got the same bumpers, lights etc as their AE86 equivalent.

    The difference between Ae85 and ae86 is the engine, chair and meter. I am japanese The car you usually ride is ae85. If your car is also in Japan, we call it ae85. However, foreigners call ae85 ae86. However, I like ae86 and ae85, so either one is fine!

      the "zenki" AE86 had the red vinyl interior available, depending on the exterior color of your car. I wouldn't call that an option. the "kouki" (MY1986 & 1987) had cloth interior trim, no red available.

    Not a bad video, I nerd out of this stuff. But... I've been a Corolla guy for a long time, and there is some small things you are misleading on. The car pictured is in fact a AE86 model, with the full model code AE86L-ECMXCA (and I can tell you what each of those letters means). AE86 refers to the model code (not the VIN). It maybe confusing that "AE86" appears inside the VIN, however that is almost a coincidence as it was early days for VIN, and the letters inside the VIN should not be taken notice of in the same way. If the VIN has "Ae88..." inside it, that is to be ignored. The model is still AE86, or AE86L-ECMQFA for some of the GT-S models. All AE86 have a 1.6 litre motor, regardless of 4A-GE or 4A-C. All AE85 have a 1.5 litre motor, and a K50 transmission (except the automatics). The 3A-U is physically very similar to the 4A-C. All AE86 use a T50 transmission (except automatics) and they all have the same ratios, only the clutch is on the opposite side for 4A-C vs 4A-GE.

    the basic difference is ae85 is cheaper 1.5 version of ae86, not the single cam 1.6 single cam 1.6 is sr5, the ae85 has luxury version too but it has smoother suspensions back drum brakes solid fron discs etc. but te basic difference is 1.5 and 1.6

    Gts Vin is technically ae88 in USA. The Gts and Sr5 trany is exactly the same. Hence you can use an sr5 bellhousing on a 4age. Just need an sr5 drive shaft. Sr5 rear end is still strong let me give you guys the best advice of the day, don't waste time and money getting a gts. You can go get a 4age and t50 for 400$ tops and a sr5 she'll for 500-1000$. Or you can spend 5000 on 30 year old worn out drift raped garbage. Up to you. Easily can swap disk brakes into the sr5 rear the mounting brackets are readily available from hawk machine Co. Perfect first car for anyone to build its straight forward and the all the information is readily available from a down to earth community. Nothing like the 240 or BMW forums. Remember go on billzilla.com for your info and go buy a Chiltons manual from amazon. trust no forum

      Coming from a guy that spend 4000 on a gts with a blown 4age (:(:(:(:(: that was just "rebuilt" with fake receipts. 8,000$ and another corolla later still only have driven one for 5 minutes. Or look into other corollas guys there's lots of old rear wheel drive Toyotas out there just as unique and equipt this ones just hyped. I would get a ke70 and NA sr20de swap if I could do it all over again. Easily in the budget that I have spent for "social status" and 100whp don't be like me guys

      Ryan Dull I just bought a clean SR5 hatch over the summer and am currently in the middle of piecing together parts for my 4age 16v swap. I think a lot of people underestimate how much easier and cheaper it is to start with a SR5 and build from there instead of buying overpriced GTS that's no where close to stock.

      I have done both. I have swapped an SR5, and bought several GTS cars also. The pain in going from SR5 to 95% GTS is a massive pain. I will never do it again. Any engine swap I do in an AE86 again will be for a 20v or similar swap.

      I’ve never seen both the 4age and t50 together for 500. Prices are going up. They’re starting to become harder to find and yet for cheap. And shells at those prices too. I got lucky buying a non running sr5 fully GT-S swapped for 1800. Only reason it was cheap was cuz the guy fucked yo the wiring and couldn’t get it running. But for real it’s extremely hard finding parts cheap for them now

    Ae86 and ae85 have levin and trueno type of 2 body style, hatchback 3 door or 2 door couple. Different are exterior, corners light, front and rear bumper interior, ae85 don't have tachometer. The taillight are so many shape. Ae85 are for efficient while ae86 for performance.
    Both look same, have levin and trueno type, 2 body style.
    Toyota corolla
    (e80 generation, ae85 and ae86 variants)
    Ae85
    Levin (regular headlamp)
    And
    Trueno (pop up headlight)
    2 door coupe
    3 door hatchback
    Also,
    Ae86

      My Sr-5 had a 3AC-SCV motor in it when i bought it, I'm pretty sure it makes a lil less power than the 4ac but the gass mileage was awesome! Was making about 45MPG's. I don't think the 4ac would be worth swapping.

      It was in a my USDM 1985 corolla SR-5 (AE86) hatchback. I believe it was out of some old JDM Tercel.

    It's huge difference from SR5 to GTS I tried to convert but there are even a transmission difference like flywheel, clutch, fuel tank and so much more thats why I'm changing my project to AE85 levin conversion cause mind as well just get GTS then getting all that part to make it GTS.

    Wrong. Chassis code is AE86. USDM Corollas are all true AE86 chassis. Yes. Different parts. But the big difference is the chassis itself. US only got AE86 chassis. GTS and SR5 are exactly same chassis.

    I try to settle this discussion because i see it a lot in the comments.
    The SR5 corolla is an ae86, no matter what engine. What parts it has. if its a 4age or 4ac, it is an ae86. The gts is not an ae86 because it says ae88 on the chassis. the ae85 is similar to the sr5 because it has a single overhead cam but one thing a lot of people dont know is that the US also got ae85 corolla. It is base model corolla. not dx or fx16 or whatever. it literally is base model corolla with an ae85 on the chassis. the gts is an ae88 chassis. Now to clarify this argument it is better stated is the sr5 corolla a trueno? the sr5 corolla is an ae86 but it is not a trueno, a trueno is an ae86 but it is not a corolla. So is the sr5 an ae86 yes. Although it lacks what the japanese ae86 has it is still an ae86

      Truenos were the pop up headlight versions of these and Levin's had fixed headlights. The name had nothing to do with the engine. They had different trim levels of each model that designated how sporty or luxurious these were.

      There’s not really such thing as an “AE88” - it’s just some characters from the vin on certain US models. It all stems from that Regular Car Reviews video which got it totally wrong. The guy that made the video has since corrected himself.
      The chassis is still stamped AE86 on all the US cars, and under ‘model’ on the build plate it says “AE86” too. So, the GTS is still an AE88.

    I just want to let you know that AE86 was not the name of the car is a code name every car that bring to USA and other countries are AE85 and AE86 the names that are only for Japan are the Sprinter Trueno and the Corolla Levin AE86 it was a worldwide code name for all cars it's not the name that's a big confusion

    I made it roughly 2 minutes into the video before I gave up. You're wrong. ALL rwd corolla sold in America between 84-87 were ae86 regardless of engine. It's stamped on the firewall ffs.

      Have you ever owned one? I have owned over 5 of these in both SR-5 and GT-S trims. The SR-5s have AE86 stamped on the firewall as part of the VIN, while the GT-S cars have AE88 in its place. I do believe this just a US/North America thing though. If you get the end of the video, my point is what you state, that they are all AE86 chassis regardless.

      @@TougeTourGuide I've only ever owned one, but I've owned it for 17 years. It's not even an sr5. It's a dx. Non folding rear seat, clock is optional. Vin is jt2ae85. The vin is just a us thing. 88 is gts, 86 is sr5, 85 is dx. All equipped with 4a engines and ae86 actually stamped into the firewall. Vin plate info is just American shit. 85 use cable clutch and some other odd ends.

    Ok.. here's the fact. AE85 and Ae86 has the similar chassis, but AE85 morely are without flipping lamps, and that's only outside lamps, also they are known as "Levin" since it has similar engines, while the AE86, the only car that provides flipping lamps is only be used in the AE86 models. so these models isn't wrong and its still the AE86. Just mentions "Levin Ae85 and see the difference of its front and back lamps with the AE86. there's a huge difference between both of them and you will understand which specs is the AE85 and AE86. These facts are being known in Japan for a centuries.

      Both ae85 and ae86 had levin and trueno models. The us versions and their names are really down to personal opinion. To me the gts is basically and ae86. Same engine same chassy same drive train. It was detuned for emissions regulation.
      Its really about the personality of theese cars. The ae86 is known for its chassy, drive train and its engine - the 4age. The ae85 is basically the econmy version to cut down on fuel costs. If it has the same chassy but weaker engine. its pretty much a ae85 in my opinion.
      The ae86 is the chassy with a 4age.
      The ae 85 is a 86 with a weaker engine that is sohc and carburated
      The gts is the american version of the 86, same chassy same engine (just has some air restirctor thing i think), just left hand drive.
      The sr-5 is an economy version of the gts. same chassy diffrent engine that just so happens to be sohc and carburated. Yes the engines different to the actual ae85 but it serves the same purpose.
      But how tf did someone end up thinking ae85 meant levin and ae86 meant trueno.
      Theres quite a few variants of the ae86, hatchback or coupe, trueno or levin, zenki or kouki. three things u can mix and match so theres about quite a few variants (e.g. coupe trueno hatchback kouki or a trueno coupe zenki)
      so what makes the 86 an 86? its main features really. The ae86 comes in a lot of variants. Not sure about the american models though
      In the end it doesn't matter, it has four wheels and an engine, its your car. Make it your own and have fun with it

      SpartinTV wrong, sr5 and gts are both ae86s now the ae85 is a diff story, ae86s are europe,america and japan options..
