The Austin scene (at least in the very beginning) was fueled more by mescaline than LSD, and the incredibly literate, spiritual, and uplifting lyrics are the finest example of genuinely psychedelic (not merely “trippy”) songwriting of the era, genuinely transcendent if you get into the right frame of mind.
Totally agree. One of the only songs from that era I can think of that goes beyond the "free your mind" sentiment and actually details the ascension process.
He was obviously deeply aware of a spiritual system. It was taking a very powerful LSD tab in the 1980's (the last time I took it) that made me look deeper and get into Kabbalah. There really are methods of ascending your consciousness through depth meditation without the need of drugs. It has a flavour of "A Thousand And One Nights" when you manage to tap into it, really magical feeling. In those heightened states life is experienced very differently, from the level of the soul, and all the true spiritual systems have their methods, all aiming at the same result. The brain has all kinds of psychedelic drugs available if you can learn how to stimulate it naturally, to release them. Not something that is achieved overnight, but it's a fascinating journey.

Glad to have shook hands with the great Roky Erickson here in Austin before he left this Earth. He signed my Easter Everywhere album and soon after realized that the band practiced in my neighborhood back in the '60s at his mother's home.

I did a shorter acoustic version (about 5 minutes) of this song at a Center for Spiritual Living-Clear Lake, TX Zoom service on March 7, 2021. It was quite well received… as this song stands as a beautiful spiritual statement… no matter how the journey was initiated. 🙂✌️🎶❤️
