  • This is by far and away the longest video we have ever posted on RUclips! And since we uploaded this 40 minute video as a 1080 HD file, it took 26 hours to download. Wow!
    We hope that even though this is a very long video, it will still be entertaining and fun to watch. We wanted everyone to experience all six Steam Locomotives in the same video so everyone could see just how incredible these G scale locomotives really are! And they are truly amazing!
    Please be aware that these are just some of the Steam Locomotives that run on our layout each year. As you can see, just six locomotives consumed 40 minutes of video. Making this video any longer would have probably put people to sleep! So we thought about doing another video down the road that will showcase the remaining Steam Locomotives that we run on this layout.
    Most of the scenes in this video were shot using a GoPro Hero 3 (black) and Sony’s new AS100V video cameras. I was really surprised at the quality of the AS100V. It was every bit as good as my GoPro, but cheaper and had a longer lasting battery life than the GoPro we used. Great job on this camera Sony! We were impressed.
    Many of the scenes in this video where shot during the past year or so. And as you can see, the quality was excellent! But we also mixed in scenes that were shot during an Open House we sponsored three years ago as a charity event for a very good friend of ours who was diagnosed with Cancer. The one day event was very successful! Lots of people came to see the layout, eat great food, hear a great band, and contribute to a great cause. The event raised $8,000 for our friend to help offset the rising doctor and hospital bills that the family was incurring.
    Those Open House scenes were shot by a friend of mine who had a Canon 5D Mark III camera, which is a picture camera with video capabilities. He works in a video production company, so we thought he would be the perfect person to help us out with documenting this event. The video quality wasn’t as good as I would of liked, but he did it for free, so we couldn’t complain too much.
    So here we go
    The scenes have been shot - the video has been edited - the final production has been uploaded - and it's now ready to be viewed . . . . . . .
    Please sit back, grab a cold one, put your feet up, and watch this amazing G scale video featuring some of the Steam Locomotives that transverse the rail of the Palo Verde & Southwestern Railroad!

      michael gagneaux That sounds like fun. Bring them over and we will play trains together! Those passenger cars would probably look incredible on our layout. We open the layout up at the end of October and run thru the end of April. In December, we have Open Houses every Friday and Saturday night of the month. We put them on as a way of raising money for the Phoenix Children's Hospital. Because of an accident that I had last December, we were unable to put that on. But two years ago, we raised over $18,000 for that organization. We had Santa Claus, great food trucks, live entertainment, and of course - the Trains! That particular year, 22,000 people came through our backyard for that Open House.
      Until then, have a great summer and hope to see you soon!Dennis Sirrine

    I love it when we get to see this RR! Thank you once again.
    I'm struggling to get the kinks worked out on mine. I have a tough time with fifty cars on a train. Can I guess that you use all KD couplers? Do you also use all roller bearing wheels? Everything rolls so smoothly.
    I know your track work is as smooth as glass. My trains show me everywhere the RR is not perfect!

    • @dennissirrine
      @dennissirrine  9 лет назад +1

      unifrax5 Every car and locomotive has Kadee couplers and every freight car has roller bearing metal wheels I purchase from Al Kramer. That is the basic for every G scale train item that runs on our layout. No plastic wheels and no LGB couplers. But before the metal wheels and Kadee couplers, I knew the track had to be perfect so the trains would run smoothly. I had seen so many layouts around the country with really bad track and I didn't want that on my layout. So, with that in mind, here Is how I approached the track work on the PVSW.
      The very first thing I did was bring in the big boys; I had graders and scrapers level my entire backyard area. I needed level ground to start this layout with. Then I had two masons laying 8 x8 x16 concrete block wherever there was going to be track and poured the block solid with concrete. There are thousands and thousands of 8 x 8 x 16 concrete block that was placed by two masons over a year period of time.
      Next, we laser leveled a 4" concrete cap on top of all the block. And every curve was super-elevated using thin set mortar. Next came the 1/2" padding from this guy in Tennessee, and it was glued down to the concrete cap on the straights and thin set mortar on the curves. This gave the track a great base for smoothness and give. This 1/2" padding helped tremendously in keeping the track straight!
      Next (and this is imperative!) we took out any screws that were holding the brass rails to the ties. I can't remember which manufacturer was famous for doing this; but securing the rails to the ties does not allow the track to move as it heats up and cools down, causing all sorts of problems. The rails have to move along the ties! If they don't, your track will go all over the place!
      And finally, we secured the track to the concrete cap using concrete screws that penetrated the ties - then it penetrated the 1/2" padding - and finally the screws imbedding themselves into the concrete cap. We used 5 screws per each 60" piece of track.
      But I'll tell you - the greatest thing that keeps our track perfectly straight during any kind of weather are the 6" pieces of track that Hillman Clamps developed; which lets the track expand and contract during the extreme heat in the summer and the colder weather in the winter. These expanding track pieces were placed every 20' throughout the whole layout, giving each 20' section of track 3/4" of an inch to expand and contract. In the summer, the expansion track is almost closed, and in the winter it is almost completely open. That 6" piece of expanding track was genius on the part of Richard Hillman. Richard came up with the working idea on this expanding track, and then the design and manufacture of this 6" piece, so it would work in the G scale world. Without this 6" piece of expanding track, there would be no way I could keep my track straight! Even being secured to the concrete, without the 6" expanding track, it would go all over the place.
      So if you do only these two things #1 no screws holding the rails to the ties (remove them) and #2 expanding track every 20' - your track will stay extremely straight so you can run those longer trains you want so bad to run!
      I hope this information has helps you. If you do just those two things, you will be in great shape with your track.Dennis Sirrine Engineer / ConductorPalo Verde & Southwestern RR

      ***** Thank you!!! more help than I could ever hope!I just ordered the expanding sections. I'll have to remove the screws over some time though. Rats!

    • @unifrax5
      @unifrax5 9 лет назад

      unifrax5 Those SJ expansion rails really help. I thought I didn't need them. It's one of the products that you don't realize how bad the track is until after you fix it! It would actually come apart in two places at night. It was so tight in the ballast that it went back together during the day. After a big rain, the rails didn't go back and I saw what was happening! One of the clamps was actually pushed off the rail. Now lets see if I have anymore troubles!

    • @dennissirrine
      @dennissirrine  9 лет назад

      unifrax5 These expansion tracks should eliminate 95% of your track problems. But again, there can not be any screws holding the rails to the ties. Turn the track upside down and check to see if there are any screws. If there are, take them out. You should be able to freely move the rails through the ties. In fact, you should be able to completely remove the rails from the ties. If you can not do that, then there are still screws holding it somewhere. I can not stress enough how important it is to get those screws out!

      We have a video that was produced for us, that takes this layout from a huge piece of dirt in our backyard / to what you see in this video. It was extremely well done, and is very comprehensive / showing all of the construction challenges in building something like this from stratch . If anyone is interested in purchases this video, you can go to my RUclips site (pikeup45) and purchase it there. It usually sells between $9.00 and $18.00.

      +Jonny Beck We are not in California - This layout is in the Phoenix, Arizona area of the country. And because it has started getting hot, we have terminated operations for this season and will open back up this coming November. So we are open for viewing and Open Houses November through April every year. Hope to see you when we open back up!
