As a teacher, remembering everyone’s name and pronunciation takes time. But it worth it in the end because it shows respect.
Also, if you work in a public school; you have hundreds of kids every year so..
I met a teacher I had two years ago in the hallway a few days ago and she remembered my name...and I even have grown a lot taller in that time, so I was really surprised. I really hope I'll have her again in one of the next school years.
In my Florida district it’s now illegal to call the kid anything else but their legal name, no nicknames. Strictly forbidden. (Unless the student and parent sign a paper online. I thinkkk we all know what they’re trying to do lol)

Oh I also learnt who’s name is ahead of me in every class which it’s the same kid because the teachers hate us and put us in the same class for literally everything (except the 2 classes we pick ourself) but since it goes in alphabetical order I’m next to this kid in every single class.
(The only teacher who can get my name right is my art teacher because she actually cares for her students)

There was a kid in my class and his name was dartangan "dar tan yon" and my teacher was struggling to say it and then he told her how to say it and he also told her to call him Tanner since it's easier but my teacher said" I want to call you dartangan. That is a gnarly name man I love that." That teacher was AMAZING.

I also knew a dartangan. he went by D. I met him at a party and even after making him repeat his name 3 times, I still couldn't hear what he said. dartangan, Lance, and brael, (edit: i forgot about kole lol) are the reasons why my mom says I like guys with weird names, even though a. I didn't even like dartangan that much, and b. I didn't like lance at all, he just became obsessed with me.

My boss makes an effort to call me my full (11 letter long) first name. I appreciate it a lot. I don't mind being called my nickname, but I also usually tell people that nickname right away.
It's actually spelled Dartagnan assuming he was named after the 4th Musketeer, my family named our dog Dartagnan because of that book lol

On the first day my teacher asked everyone if they wanted a nickname after she said their names
I love the "It's hard, so I won't remember" Somehow it's easier to remember 15 different Ashleys in that year, but the one and only Oleksiy you'll probably ever encounter is too much.
It’s easier to remember 20 basic names and slowly match faces and harder to match the name you might not hear everyday with a kid who’s quiet…esp when teachers can meet around over 200 kids on the first day of school

Like just ask the student how their name is said and learn it if you have so little respect for your students that you won't call them their names you shouldn't be a teacher. Giovanna isn't even a very uncommon name. Its easy to say cause it follows standard English pronunciations, its not like my name, Tatijana which is Russian and is said tah tee yah nah, the j makes a y sound. All my teachers learned it and could say it the only ppl I've ever had not learn how to say it are people who thought of me as a number like some bosses or people who's mouths literally don't work right to form those sound. This is a simple matter of respect if a person refuses to learn how to say someone's name when they have the ability to they are being disrespectful.

As a teacher, nicknames are fine if they come about naturally, the students likes them, etc., but, as a general rule, we should try to learn to pronounce students’ names! Sure, it may take a little while to get the hang of it, but we should at least make a conscious effort!❤️

I kinda disagree bcs I stutter so when exampl it a scenteche like 'with him' but I sound it like 'with them' bcs when I say 'with' my accent comes out and it now says 'wid' so maybe I'm think the teacher has hard time pronounce and memorising
Yeah it's really not difficult for most people to say but I gotta disagree with you calling it weird and creepy for a teacher to talk to their student at their locker. Like- ???. It's not like she followed her outside, she just went to their locker to talk to the student instead of in front of the class.

I agree but to a point many my relatives arent able to pronounce my name and its a pretty simple name. Their first language is korean or spanish so they arent used to english as their first language.
I mean but you have to take into consideration she's in middle school my school has 8 class periods that's at least 20 students per class which makes it 160 students names the teacher has to remember and it's not really creepy to follow a student to their locker the teacher probably just didn't want to disrupt class tbh

Some teachers have a hard time pronouncing kids names like I had a couple teachers had a hard time saying the kids names
I worked a summer program at an elementary school this past summer and there was a girl with a somewhat tricky name to pronounce. She told us how it was pronounce and NOBODY said anything else. Everybody called her by how she said it was pronounced and after hearing this, I appreciate that now. It seems like we all collectively agreed to try our best to commit the name to memory and we did!

All kids deserve to be called by their name that they identify with; even if it takes some extra effort. I feel like it’s a basic courtesy to genuinely try your best without making them feel like an inconvenience

i agree. it’s really not cool to do this, especially with a name that isn’t difficult to pronounce. it’s a lot easier to ask a child to repeat it slowly rather than follow them to their locker and ask for a personal nickname!
@@memeju1ce I was obsessed with Sailor moon in school, still am just not as bed, and would have done anything to be Sailor moon, and I Identified with her personality, both cry babies, scared of everything, failed at school, clumsy, whiney, always late, sucked at sports, etc. So I would have basically told people to address me as if I was her. I mean my last name can be turned into Bunny and Usagi means Bunny

for me it’s the opposite, my name is kinda hard to pronounce and most people can’t say it correctly and one of my teachers was like “ I wanna get your name correct” and she kept on saying it wrong and I asked her if she could say it incorrectly a different way but she said no 😭😭
As a teacher, I tell students to correct me whenever I get it wrong...until I get it right! Some kids are like "it's ok just say it however" but my response is "no, your name is important, I need to get it right" - this also shows other students that it is not okay to make fun of names.I also make sure to apologise every time I get it wrong.

I wish I have had a teacher like this, my name is Gabriela and I go by Gabi but my whole life no matter how many times I tell this group of boys to call me Gabi they don't care and just call me gabe-riela and laugh and me in front of the whole class.

I have a very long name. It's common in my culture to have a shorter version of your name, like you literally never hear the full name until someone gets angry/documents get involved. But when we moved countries teachers at school insisted that they need to use my full name only

It's why I asked if it was okay for me to know, as I didn't want to assume! I do know how to read Hangul, as I'm learning Korean! I do very much appreciate your explanation on how to pronounce it! I have a science teacher who does this too. There’s some cases where I understand calling a kid by a nickname, like if they go by a nickname regularly or if they say you can but don’t just assume it’s fine. I go by Cali at home, but at school I go by my full name, Calista. Recently though, some teachers started calling me Cali and it honestly makes me kinda uncomfortable
I had a gifted ELA teacher and I adore her to this day. She made such a lasting impact on me with her kind heart. She understood mental health and that we all struggle with it. She made everyone feel included and loved every single day and I will always cherish the memories made in her classroom.
And if it takes you a bit, theres no shame in asking again. One year my teacher got my name right ONCE before i changed it.
I appreciate teachers that actually try to and learn and pronounce even if they get it wrong. most teachers or substitutes give up before they try and address me by my last or middle name I HATE IT SM 💀

ya, not calling a kid by the name they want is a problem for so many reasons. It alienates kids with "foreign" or "odd" names and it's just disrespectful. It's a horrible way to start off a relationship with a person you're presumably about to teach and guide for a whole year. They're not gonna respect you if you can't even be bothered to learn to say their name. And furthermore, kids have so little agency already, and school restricts their agency even more, and that sucks, so at the very least we should be giving kids choices and respecting those choices wherever possible. And letting a kid choose what they want to be called is such a simple way to give them control over their self-expression.
I get teachers have way too much on their plates, but ya gotta learn your student's names.
I see that but it could also be embarrassing for the student to have the teacher struggle just on her name especially because she said she was the quiet kid. In middle school if I was that kid and the teacher was botching my name I’d probably die with all of the extra attention and weird looks by my peers

in 6th grade i had a teacher ms sparks but she taught social studies i think. sweetest teacher. we cried together once because i told her something that was deeply bothering me and causing me to struggle in school. she just hugged me. i will never forget her.

Whenever I have a substitute I already know they are going to struggle. One time my new teacher called me 'Anna' when it dosent even relate with my name and I was way to shy to say something.

As a teacher this breaks my heart!! I’ve learned over the years that if I have a child with a difficult to pronounce name, I ALWAYS ask them privately if I am saying it correctly or if they have a nickname that they prefer. They may already be insecure or feeling overwhelmed and then you draw so much attention to them with this kind of thing.
There was this kid in my geography/history class last year, Jobcy, we had a substitute one day and when they got to his name (though he was absent) he said “Is there a Job.. Job-guy in here?” I will forever remember that.

Don't speak for all of us. Hate when people try to pronounce my name "properly." When I just gave them easy to pronounce, easy to remember variant of it. Just use it, and we'll be fine. You are not making me any favors by standing there, struggling, and calling unwanted attention to such a small thing. Hella awkward, hate it with a fiery passion.

that was like my first grade teacher. for context, my name sounds similar to “rocky” (its not spelled that way) so my first grade teacher asked if she could call me rock. i said no for obvious reasons, even though i was a shy kid. its important to advocate for yourself.

I remember when one of my teachers called me to their desk and apologized for calling me Sophie cause my name is Sophia. I told her it was fine but she wanted to say sorry just in case names are a sign of respect. Your teacher had no right to do that to you because being called by your preferred name is a respectful and responsible thing to do.

Growing up with an middle eastern name in the US, this happens to me constantly, for about 6 years I went by Ellie as my elementary school teacher told my mother that she should have given me a more “white name”, now that I’m in high school, I’ve completely refused to not be addressed by other than my full name just out of spite lol

My name was apparently hard to pronounce for a number of teachers. It's written "Madeleine" and said "mad-eh-lane", but everyone pronounced it as "mad-eh-line". I absolutely hated that, but whenever I tried to correct them, they acted like I was just being a class clown or simply being disruptive for the sake of it.
I got detentions for "talking back", despite being a stellar student in basically every other regard. One teacher even claimed that I had been lying and changing the pronunciation every single time (not true). The upper faculty questioned other people in my class about whether I was changing the pronunciation every time and of course every single person said I hadn't.
It’s actually frustrating to always have to repeat my name three times just for teachers to pronounce it wrongly.

As a high school teacher, I have seen so many students who automatically go to a nickname when i struggle to pronounce their name at first. I always clarify that they dont have to go by a nickname unless they want, that I WILL learn how to pronounce it correctly and if I EVER mess it up that they should correct me and I wont get mad. I tell students that I respect them enough to learn their name.

Opposite story but one of my friends strictly went by his nickname. Like parents, friends, family only called him his nickname. And one year, we had a sub try to send him to the principals office because he "lied" about his nickname!!! We all came to his defense!

I have a name my teachers often butcher. They pronounce my name wrong constantly that I don’t even correct them anymore. They were only my teacher and I didn’t really like them so I thought it was only fitting for them to pronounce my name that way. They didn’t care about me, they’re not close to me, and don’t even have the decency to say my name right after telling them how it’s pronounced multiple times. They would even go as far as to tell me that’s not how it should be pronounced because of how its spelt. After awhile, I became fine with them mispronouncing my name because I ended up realizing, they’re too shitty to deserve to say my name.😂 I was a weird kid. My classmates called me by my nickname and my teachers continued to mispronounce my name until I left that school.
I think teachers and just people in general should have the common decency to pronounce someone’s name correctly or at least try to and continue to try to. If you know someone who’s too shitty to even try- and you can’t get them to pronounce it right because they don’t have any respect towards you, I’m sorry you have to endure that. On the bright side, you get to know a little bit about their character, and at least you know early on they’re pretty shitty. ^^;

As a teacher, I always try and pronounce the names of my kids properly. It's part of their identity and as long as they don't tell me a nickname I won't ask them for one just to make life easier for me

My first name is Eternity all the way through elementary school all my teachers refused to use it saying it was too long for a elementary school kid to remember.

Okay I was blessed with an easy to pronounce name, but I have vivid memories of kids in my classes having difficult to pronounce names, and the teacher just….asked them how to pronounce it until they memorized it. I thought that was what all teachers did, so omfg this is a horrifying idea
It's so frustrating for me because I had somebody continuously mispronounce my name--Even when I gave her a shortened version which I was uncomfortable with--EVEN WHEN I SAID IT TO HER AND SHE SAID IT BACK SHE SAID IT WRONG. She constantly misspelled it too. She told me I had to be patient with her--I would have been if she hadn't said it in such a patronizing way to me over and over again. She was nice to everyone but me, and it was sickening to hear people always talk about how nice she was when she never ever was like that to me.

All my teachers just ask about peoples names every lesson until they get it right
Currently in college to be a teacher but that's already a rule I've set for myself when I do become a teacher. Some people strictly go by nicknames (my friend Elizabeth only went by Liz, a boy named Dominick pretty much just went by Domo), and others do not want nicknames at all (a boy named Wilson did not like being called Will). Also, I want to make sure I'm pronouncing names right (my roommate's name is Regan, pronounced like REE-gan, but teachers always say it like REH-gan, and she's so shy that she doesn't correct them), so I want future students to let me know if I'm saying it wrong. Basically, call people the name they want to be called (as long as it's appropriate, since we're talking about teenagers 😂)
6th grade me would have asked how she's able to teach if her brain is compromised enough to struggle to remember a name. 6th grade me was definitely a problem child tho.

I changed schools and my math teacher had a hard time remembering and pronouncing my name. But she never once asked me if I went by another name, and she’s got my name now!

I used to have over 500 students I saw over a two week rotation. I wrote down the pronunciation of every kids name. Yes it was more effort but the pay off was worth it. Those kids loved the respect and connection we had as did I.
No excuse for this teacher.
My sixth grade teacher would go round and ask everybody their name pronounce it, and if they went by a nickname I loved her
I hate that they would think it’s okay to call u by something so personal that only family uses
I had a French teacher that couldn’t pronounce different names and when she got to mine in the register she just skipped me because she couldn’t say my name 💀
one of best friends has a fairly difficult name to pronounce and one of our teachers just gave her a nickname she didn’t even ask
This year there was a boy in my class (he was the only boy in the class), he always used his nickname and disliked when the teachers said his full name lol. I still have no idea what his full name was
My old p.e teacher used to take roll call and ask to make sure she was saying their name right. She also asked if there was a nickname they wanted her to use.
Kid in my class had a difficult name, including me, but that didn’t stop my teacher from not learning it, she got mine and this other kids name pronunciation right after around 3 weeks, although our names were hard, my teacher was dedicated to get the names right.
As I've gotten older I've moved away from letting people outside my family call me a nickname. I know that makes me sound pretentious. However, I've come to realize that a nickname without a meaning is just demeaning. What I mean by that is that if your nickname does not mean something to you or someone close to you (even if it means the smallest, silliest thing) then it is not a nickname. It is a name people use to refer to you because they can't be bothered. Nicknames should be special and shared with those close to you. They should make you smile when you hear them call you by that nickname.
My whole life people have shortened my name for their own convenience. Kids and teachers shortened my name and I just went along with it because I thought my name was too long. But I know my name is beautiful, I have been told so my whole life. So I'm standing up for myself and saying I want to be called by my actual name, not a shortcut. And I believe others should too.

Usually a longer name is easier to remember because it is so rare or different
girl i feel you, crazy thing is sometimes the names don’t be hard to pronounce. it’s spelled how its pronounced so at that point they don’t know how to read or are being dense
I'm Italian and in middle school I used to go on school trips to Wales. One of my classmates' name was Dalila, which is apparently difficult to pronounce for English speakers, but the lady who taught us (was like 70+) always tried to say it, even if it sounded horrible. I still remember her neverending kindness❤❤
All of my teachers still get my ex bsf’s name wrong to this day I remember always laughing abt it. 😭
I got that a lot with my deadname to the point where i was like “just use kally” but now i changed my name in the school system to “kayden”

It’s also ok to ask a few times and keep trying. Eventually you will get it at least close enough.
I have a friend with a "difficult name" (Indian) and I've heard a few teachers ask if she has a nickname. She always says no, and the teachers learn to say it just fine
