- In 1990, American Family Association and Jack Thompson, a lawyer affiliated with the AFA, met with Florida Governor Bob Martinez and convinced him to look into the rap group 2-Live Crew's "As Nasty as They Wanna Be" to see if it met the legal classification of obscene. In 1990 action was taken at the local level and Nick Navarro, Broward County sheriff, received a ruling from County Circuit Court judge Mel Grossman that probable cause for obscenity violations existed. In response, Luther Campbell maintained that people should focus on issues relating to hunger and poverty rather than on the lyrical content of their music.

"you drop a bomb but a boob offends you!" - Mike Virus
I was a junior in high school when this aired; it would have been in the Spring of 1990. I raced home from school to see this episode!
Yup. This was around June of 1990
I missed this one....I saw the Gerado Rivera show.
What people didn't realize back then is that the more shit you kick up about records that should be banned......the more you make kids want to go out and buy the records.
I think that's still the case today
True and it's relevant today.
I'm not from the US but when I was a kid the CD's were imported from the US and they came with the "Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics" sticker. I always thought that the cooler records were the ones who "gained" that stickers! I'm from a third world Spanish speaking country btw.
This audience would faint with the reality of hip-hop today. ❤
Donahue is the man.
donahue was the man wish he had stayed on, but Oprah put him out of business> loved donahue. xoxo🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😘😘😘😘😍
he was gangsta
And Gerardo
The parent at the beginning of this clip wants society to do the job of parenting for her.
The irony of all these "Christians"
That 90s Karen was wild 😂
Jack Thompson's voice sounds just like how people talk when they're making fun of white people.
LOL, yup
that white woman's voice also seems like a parody of white people
Chris Gaffray
What seems as parodies in this video is what whites sounded like, back in the day 😂.
@@ManPursueExcellence Not exactly. That's a specific type, not whites in general. I never met a white who spoke or behaved this way until way into my adulthood. I was under the impression that people on TV only acted like that, because it just wasn't my reality - Philly native
😂😂😂
9:40 Rap: a brand new kind of music *Audience laughs* 2016 Hip Hop is a Billion dollar industry "Rap songs" are played on every Kiss FM station.
and it started in my era. over 40 years ago. i remember i was on the dance floor, and they put on Curtis Blow, and over 5 mins. later it was still playing, and i said, when is this damn song going to end. people started walking off the dance floor, tired of dancing, songs normally were 3 mins or less. The rap, music back in the day, was really clean, no cussing, no women called bitches and hoes, none of that. about 15 to 20 years later, her come that filthy gangster rap, for my teenage son to listen to and idealize..omgawd!!!, and it haven't left since.🤔🙄😫🤐😒😒😤😤😖😬😬😱😳😳😡🤬🥺😈💩🙊😬🤢🤮
I remember that episode since I was born and I will never forget the Donahue Show. Good Memories.
When they performed Face Down Ass Up live in the aisles? I agree - such fun :)
I still remember the episode on porn with Gina Fine, Nina Hartley and Hyapatia Lee. Oh my God they were beautiful.
LMFAO, the lady at 1:05 is so shook she cuts herself off before she could even say the word "sex." Hilarious.
I think it was ridiculous how they were on 2 live crew for their music but you had Sam Kinison and Andrew Dice Clay saying the craziest on their albums at this time and how about Madonna!? Now I'm fan of them too but they were not getting as much crap as 2 live crew were getting. And I don't think that was right. They were talented and entertaining as all hell and really lead the way to alot of rap artists today.
This was a reference later used in Banned in the USA
Karen of the 80s
The question should be: would you leave your children alone with this Jack Thompson creep?
the shittiness of the bon jovi song offended me
Clowns you know. Interesting show. They should have stuff like this on TV now, then I'd start watching TV again.
Holy shit, the barbs that Luke and Jack are trading back and forth is so wild to watch.
A few years later and everyone was on AOL and CompuServe getting exposed to all manner of and form of porn, and gore plus subversive texts and media. We were still so collectively innocent in 1990.
Donahue was a real ally
8:17 Phil: Yeah, next thing you know the Supreme Court's gonna say it's ok to burn the flag!
-- It had already happened the year before: Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989)
That what he was saying. He was being funny
that womans a liar. the movie parenthood is a pg-13 movie. maybe dont let youre 4month old and 6 yr old watch it. dont blame others for your parenting failures
Sad ,but the good old days!, compare to TODAY!
at 9:18 "...I don't even consider this art..... He's rapping, not singing" Um.... To call that closed-minded should be offensive to closed-minded people.
In the words of the vice-president of the US at the time: "What a waste it is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is."
And that hot take is forever immortalized in DJ Shadow’s Entropy.
Did Phil Donahue love the 2 Live Crew he was trying to defend Luke Skywalker
He's defending free speech.
Jello, Wendy, Mike and Luke!!
I BROUGHT THE ALBUM BACK IN 1992, ON TAPE LOLOVELINDA AUSTRALIA ❤❤❤
Only if they knew. Luke was child's play compared to what's out now. It starts at home no matter what.
She says she doesn't want her 10 11 and 12 yr old seeing and hearing these things trust me lady rap and rock lyrics are the least of their worries. I looked porn at that age so no you can't stop your kids from seeing or hearing these things.
so many women like her are naive and in denial. they want to live in a leave it to beaver world. lol
oaklandsoldier8520
Pretty much.
oaklandsoldier8520
Does that woman only put on the tv when Little House On The Prairie is on. She is so upset over nothing.
I wish I could thumb this up 100 times. There were even an episode where they featured Porn Stars and were looking at them in more of a positive light.
At the age of 6 - 10 I already knew what a naked female looked like. Hypocrisy is a virus in this country. Music bothers people but R and X rated movies don't
As a 23 year old black individual, I fucks wit Donahue heavy
Man, I wonder what would happen if these squares read some Cannibal Corpse lyrics
Just think there was no public internet back then, and the groups back then wore the parential advisory sticker like a badge.
The metal and hip hop acts probably did but the underground bands (Punk and Hardcore) didn't see it as a badge of honor. The vast majority of Punk bands ignored it and did what they wanted. The "Parental Advisory" sticker was a compromise between the PMRC groups and the major labels.
'Murica... hypocrisy level over 9000! Just let the music be whatever it is!
Jello Biafra is a hero.
yes
He’s a poser
Luke is the man lol
Need to watch the last 20 seconds over and over. Phil hit it out of the park there.
wow, that pic of luthers daughter was wrong but i guess that was before the internet
What would they say now
Goddamn people were wacky in the 80's/early 90's......especially the fundamentalist Christian's.
And this ladies and gentlemen is the ORIGINAL "KAREN" 0:29. Do you hear the whining?????😂
that women at the beginning of the video is hopeless.
Hideous clothes in 1990.
So the musical acts 2 Live Crew, Dead Kennedys, The Plasmatics and Suicidal Tendencies are "only out to defend Jewish interests"? What kind of argument is that?
Bruh lmao
If only there was a person from 2022 on the show to tell the Christians that in the future THEY will be censored too.
I was 21 when they came out with their 2nd album i accidentally purchased the clean version cassette..i went back to try to exchange for the dirty version. Long story I bought the dirty version and I loved❤️ it not to mention my friend i was with bought the vinyl the explict version and it was jammin. I had the 2 Live poster in my room wall. If you're against this type of music turn the other cheek... Ink
That lady probably got a heart attack with now days trap music.
She pooped her pants!!
This shit was all about money. These TV programs didn't give a fuck about resolving differences they wanted to keep these people fighting, that was the staple of business back in the late eighties early nineties
Bon Jovi is more than just obscene. They drain my plasma.
Read the bible is worse than any x-rated videos
Parenthood is an awesome movie
lol wowww the fact she was complanin about that is REALLLY REALLY SAD LOL
These fuckin' "moral" people practically live in the 40s and 50s and they're stuck in this Christianized form of morality, if it was up to them every artist would be the same, cleaned guy or girl and music would stagnate even more than it already is in some areas. There wouldn't be actual expression in the art, it would be the same boring shit. Plus they wanna "shield" people from the real shit rappers, punks and metal guys sing about cause they're too busy to understand things outside their little bubble. What's fucked up is that its still this way today sometimes cause of what pussies general society are, people live in their own little made up moral world with no real problems besides "oh, that person said a swear!" or something. Hell, even rock, punk and metal today has become pussified. I've met "metalheads" today they think Slayer or even Motley Crue are too violent or "Satanic", come on people!
*****
They think Avenged Sevenfold are edgy.
You're right, I know "metalheads" who are afraid of clowns, LOL! If a metalhead in the 80's said that, he would get beat up. Heavy Metal was protest music then, now it's just for bored Yoga mom kids. What a decade we live in.
Ulysses North Precisely! It used to be about taking no shit.
I never said that. Those comments were refering specifically to the "never again" brigade.
All he wanted was a Pepsi and she wouldn’t give it to him.
we decided it would be in your best interest to put you somewhere, where you can get the help that you need;)
Mike Wendy Jello Luther all on the same stage
Fair Phil
LOL@ the end when he put on the handcuffs
Jack Thompson was eventually disbarred.
Bob fucked up!
lol Fabio is driving the car in the Bon Jovi video that starts the segment
I'm gonna make you drink some poopy cellular phone 📱
Jack Thompson was a clown. Then, now, always
Messes me up to see these people saying what's obscene in the bed. It's not obscene if you like what you're doing. I grew up to 2 live crew, but I didn't think about anything they sang about when I was hanging sex.
They would have had a problem now 2021!
We are still having this aurgument. Fuck.
jack has been taking "hand motion" and body language classes from Bill CLinton.
"1.3 MILLION WHAT?!"
This was true day time talk shows, now it's all just crude and made up like Jerry Springer is.
Really telling that when you watch all these videos, those old white guys on stage debating with the artists are mostly directing their anger at 2 Live Crew... hmmm wonder why that may be
Its funny how music is today
My question is what was they doing to get pregnant? Like how tf u gone say what uncle luke was rapping about is so bad when its LIFE fucking is apart of LIFE
is that tim leary acting as a richard dawson on his own caotic unversal show, next tune in tomorrow and find out who was eating babies....
The truth is they want to do what they want to do (talking about the panel)!!
Give and an inch and they’ll take a mile. Every time.
I was 23 when this aired . Yes 2 live crew uncut version was raw . Among other songs. I remember the beat and the music was good, but the lyrics were crazy. I think it’s nasty. Now they’re just as bad.
I like the girl at 13:17 obviously the only one here who appreciates how many sick musicians are in the room, and the guy at 13:17 DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Plus he looks like spike lee
What I find offensive are war, famine and religion
13:29 DEPUTY WILLIE WASHINGTON FROM COPS!! LOL!!
He's referring to the Jewish Defense League. They're an old Adult Contemporary/post punk band.
Lmao
I'm amazed that I had to watch right up to part 3 before anybody mentioned Hitler and the nazis. Doesn't matter what topic is being discussed, you can always be assured that Hitler and the nazis will be brought into it somehow.
i wonder if the dudes on the right ever had any fun a day in their life
You can't legislate morality in a free society.
Wendy is hot
Wendy looks like a shoplifter
@@elgeneralxx Wendy looks like a beautiful expressive soul that took her life and I wish she was here.
r.i.p.wwndy
Phil was the king!
Lawyer dude is creepy af
The cute bimbo at 13:30 forgot what she was going to say
Yeah wow she's too good looking to be into all that good music. Most chicks who have the same taste as me all look like guys.
Focus on the family, binging you bad takes since the 80s.
"Well i dont even consider this art, he's rapping not singing number one...."
AHHAHAHAHAHHHAHAHHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
she wins
cry, just sob for hours hahaha. whelps!
Again audio blows.
AGENT PROVOCATEURS
where did he use the f word? i didnt catch it!
Mike Muir is so cool!
12:16 propaganda spreading women
how is this influencing child abuse?
MichaelHansenFUN in the video that comes right before this one. they censor it lol
Are there any Anti- Pornography attorney's out there in 2022? LOL
He looks a lot like Clinton. Funny they're political opposites.
Part 2 of 4, around the 10:50 mark...they had to bleep the so-called "decency" advocate for using the word "fuck."
Luke Campbell died last year and took on Sheriff Navarro.
And Hitler and the nazis isn't exactly germane to a discussion about indecency and obscenity in music, yet you have no problem with the people in the video working it into the discussion. Curious. As for "conspiracy theory whacko", whatever man. I don't do name calling. I leave that for those who need it to boost their weak argument.
Please kids will be exposed to filth. I think that's why there is music promoting filth... They know music is a powerful thing thay can change a person's mind especially a kids mind.
It's all trash.....
Wendy O. Wiliams. God bless her
