So badly needed for today's times. Stay strong everyone! "I Dissent"! ⚖️✊
I have heard several versions of this wonderful song, but Rhiannon just brought tears with the deep soul and truth in her singing. What a gift she is to us.
This is Rhiannon Giddens singing the music of her heritage. Sweet Jesus but this girl can sing. Francesco Turrai is wonderful on accordian.
Sweet Jesus
Her mixed heritage....
Rhiannon has a powerful voice that shakes your soul!
I’m 71 and not much of a singer. But bellying out this song with fellow protestors lifted me through some very scary situations. Until recently there wasn’t much out there on the Mexican American civil rights movement but it there was a lot of violent, vile hatred out there. As a white person I did not experience anywhere near what the organizers in the fields and neighborhoods experienced, but I vividly remember the face of a woman, twisted with rage, as she tried to run me down with her car. I saved myself by jumping on the hood of a parked car. Up to that point the threats were mostly verbal or consulted of throwing heads of iceberg lettuce at us…might sound funny but a big man used it to break the ribs of a tiny nun protesting with us. At one civil rights protest police dragged a pregnant organizer on her belly before throwing her in the van. The whole time they taunted her about aborting her “spicy” baby. Some of the worst things happened outside the protests…stopping an organizer and nearly castrating him kicking him in his groin. Never made the news. Not once. Just scary articles designed to further inflame insecure white folks.
You're a hero and I love you
@@juliadixon8465 thank you…I think the hero’s were the organizers in the fields and the people fighting fir their rights. I was just a small soldier…
Thank you small soldier🕊️❤️
Rhiannon Giddens is an original, authentic on so many levels!
This is a classic worship song from the African-American church thus it's timeless spiritual appeal. And Rhiannon is a fruitful vine from the same blessed stock! Uplifting performance!
speechless simply speechless when you hear the voice of an angel. A voice that brings light to the darkness and nurtures the soul and warmth to the heart. I don't have the words.
That was absolutely beautiful. YOU are one of the most important artist of our time. Please don't stop. God bless you.
Maybe the most important thing here is community.
Huddle together folks.
Nurture each other.
Let it all spread from there.
Peace y'all.
Yes!! Her words remind me of the wordsmith/poet/philosopher known as Wendell Berry
I thank the Lord for my hearing every time I hear this amazing woman perform.👍👍👍
Both of them were part of a group of presenters at a "salon" that I attended in Greece. They are so much more amazing than you can possibly think -- musically, spiritually, intellectually. Just thoroughly brilliant, kind, amazing human beings.
@@Schizophronia Wow! Thank you for sharing!

And that's why I love this young lady.
Every time that I hear Rhiannon Giddens I AM moved! I chanced upon her and The Carolina Chocolate Drops about a year/year and a half ago. I was gobsmacked!
I live in Durban, South Africa, and I tell everybody I know about her - and The Carolina Chocolate Drops.
I have yet to meet someone in this city who has heard of her - apart from those whom I have converted.
@Bobb Grimley Well said.
A brilliant performance, and a statement of the true meaning and purpose of music.
I love you Riannnon. No one can "teach" someone to be the musician and singer you are. A gift from above.
Another true gem
Thank you for explaining the historical context of this song. It brought back memories of my family and friends picketing for civil rights in the 1960's and 70's. Your interpretation was moving.

I hear echoes of Odetta.
Riannon infuses her music with spirituality to a degree that few other musicians attempt or succeed. We are all blessed by it.
Pretty woman.
More than that!
I love her disarming sideways smile. She’s real folks.
Indeed, and much more
This song is originally credited to Mississippi John Hurt.
To refer to people as Black or White is dialectic based nonsense. There are factually neither. Our Father never created a Black nor a White person. We have a whole host of people with external appearance, however all are within the same spectrum of color, from light pink to dark brown with everything in between.
It was Jesus Christ who stated this current Hegelian dialectic based division would occur at the end of mankind's days. In Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 you will find written ... and nation shall rise against nation... In the original texts (written in Greek) that word nation is Ethnos, which is where the English word Ethnic is founded.
In the 1970s we had buried the hatchet of racial divide in America.
It was radical Hegelian subversives who dug it up and wielded in over the past couple of decades to separate the people into dialectic oppositional forces. The end product being the antithesis hatred and eventual destruction of what the Hegelian's identify as "The White"
It should be noted that war in dialectic antithesis, is the same methodology deployed by the Reich against the people of Judah in the 1930s and 40s.
I wouldn't suggest espousing such evil means.
