Seven did you make sure the Verizon store was a corporate store and not a franchise Verizon store ? Does signal strength depend on what height the directional antenna is at ? Could the directional antenna itself or the cable or both possibly be defective ? Does it matter if the white part on the directional antenna is pointing to the side or pointing straight up to the sky may be ?
yes, it was a corporate store (I specifically asked). height does help... the directional antenna was higher than the stubby. possible defect, but someone camped nearby had the same directional antenna and I spoke to him the next day and he was getting similar poor results. directions say it must point directly at the tower like I was attempting. no idea why it wasn't working
@@SevenWanderstheWorld would you be willing to try getting 2nd stubby and 2 adaptor plugs to connect directly to back of hotspot and test for mimo without booster???
I am seriously considering this to replace my outdated DSL. I am paying $60 a month for 5x1mb. When they first ran the fiber, it was great. But now, I feel like I am getting cheated. This is the first viable option to become available to us. I would like to know how well this jetpack can handle multiple streams, for extended periods of time.
no idea. I get a huge range of speeds depending on the technology in the towers near me. if your tower has the latest equipment it could be great for you
Thank you ! Very helpful and detailed. If you would mind continue some random updates at new location, just a quick comment. It is very interesting and helpful to know. Thank you again
I realize this is a year old but in case you see this could you let me know how the hotspot is working after a year? Have you run into any throttling issues using Verizon prepaid?
I did this video in the first week of owning the product when it was blinding fast... weeks 3 and 4 were speeds of around 256k and 512k and could barely load webpages (extreme throttling). I cancelled my account and sold the 8800.
@@SevenWanderstheWorld I had a feeling that would be your answer. I'm considering using it with a grandfathered unlimited account. Right now I'm using a phone bridged to a router but it would be nice to take advantage of the extra speed this modem/router could possibly provide. Thanks!
Find out if you can get this same good Verizon hotspot on a device that has an ethernet port? This is so you can wire it to a router in your home and broadcast the internet throughout a house. I just tried the Netgear Nighthawk mr1100 unlocked with a third parties SIM card. The product is called "Blue magic" a cellular isp that recently started getting popular in my area after Hurricane Michael. I wasn't getting good signal strength and download speeds on it in my area. In contrast, my friend was getting 30 Mbps (great for this area) living approx. 10 miles from me and has an At&t tower near him. The device can also pick up internet from Verizon towers in my area. When connected to Verizon tower the signal strength was improved but the download speeds went down compared to the faster download speed of the At&t tower that it would connect to but have a poor unreliable signal.
Thankfully I scrolled through the replies...I was ready to run out & buy...please update this or remove so others don't make the mistake of buying the device.
You didn't mention power for the Yagi.. I've seen one like that (no idea if it's the same one) that had an amplifier in it, and required power to work well.
great question. I think I'll be downsizing the collection sometime this year. mostly it is one of the few items retained from when I owned a house and had a knife block collection which I just put up in my kitchen. I think I use 3 knives daily from that collection
@@andys623 Our hotspot is throttled at 25G in a month on LTE and unlimited on 3G which is fine as we are in the woods most of the time with low connectivity. After 25G in a month, we are fine on LTE for a decent connection in low population density areas which is our use case scenario.
actually it is not a website. it is an internal router "web page" generated by the router. you type into the browser address the following number: 192.168.1.1/ that will show you the controls of the jetpack
@@SevenWanderstheWorld I set up mine with 2 Yagi in a V arrangement - no power source. I am using a Huawei 4gLTE-wifi router. You might check that you have the male/female issue correct. Hard to see in the video but I did not see a lead in that connector you showed.
I have the same plan. My local store was adamant that the jetpacks were limited to 15 gig of data, then it capped. Please let us know if you hit a 15g limit. I dont think I ever will....lol
over on mobileinternetresourcecenter, they said if you go to a store, demand the pay as you go plan $65, which is unlimited but 3rd priority, AND the 8800L $199. they won't do it over phone or online. deprioritized hurts speed less than being throttled (capped) at X GB of data.
I too just got on board with the (VHS) - Verizon Hot Spot 8800L I use it in town but I got it to hit the road... I have a ton of tabs open/running and my speed test is; 2 down and 7 up AS FOR THE ANTENNA: I was going to go for the RV Boost kit that also has the Directional [> antenna, maybe not now. Anyhow, what like to see your update on this ! ! !! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
I've been doing tons of research the last couple days and learned 2 things. boosters only boost one of the 4 channels inside the 8800 and in theory will cripple the speed. 2nd, it appears the 8800 takes 2 antennas (and 2 boosters if you want to boost) or for max speed you have to void the warranty and solder another 2 antennas inside for 4 antennas. all the antennas are to be mounted at 45 degree angles to each other. it is crazy complicated and I'm still figuring it out. I'll be doing another video in a couple weeks once I find a solution! ps. you can do a keyword search for MIMO 4x4 antennas and how they work to get you started
Bry - Been a week since your comment so I seriously hope you managed to get your panties untwisted by now. Good luck with the whole life thing - sounds like you’ll need it. (Btw, watch out for those Commie stop signs they’ve planted everywhere just to try controlling your actions!)
lol I bought this to try out and never saw anything higher than 10mbps download anywhere in town. Regarding the poor yagi performance it's possible theres something up with one of the connectors or the antenna frequency band is way off from the cell tower frequency (verizon frequency is anywhere from 600mhz to 2200mhz depending on LTE band).
I only got those speeds in one location in town. for the 1st week I got about 30mbs and after two weeks speeds dropped down to under 1mbs (super slow). I rarely if ever saw speeds over 1mbs after my first two weeks which is very frustrating
funny a guy camping near me also got a new directional antenna which arrived a day after I did my test. he had the same experience comparing his stubby antenna to directional
@Jeff George the plan i have is unlimited just get deprioritized. so during the time when the tower doesn't have anyone on it i get about 20 to 30 Mbps down and up. but when i get deprioritized it goes down to 5 Mbps or less. i have a Wilson antenna for my Netgear ac791l. its been a much improved quality of life.
Very informative video! It’s always helpful to see equipment tested! Of course I subscribe to Chris & Cherie’s Technomadia for beyond thorough immersion in technology!! Thanks! Lauri
Not all antennas are the same. It has more to do with things like signal aggregation (using multiple channels at once) and having a tower that broadcasts multiple channels and a hot spot/antenna combo to receive them. If you have a MIMO hot spot (multiple in, multiple out) and you put on an antenna that drops you to one channel, that's an issue. It the tower is only broadcasting 1 or 2 channels, and you have a 4 channel capable hot spot, you'll only get 2. Truth is, this test isn't really fair. You can't compare solid city cell reception on multiple channels to rural weaker signals on fewer channels. You should have also tried the test without any antennas and compared it to the unit all by itself with it's internal antenna. You could also look up to see which channels your provider is broadcasting at your location. This video is pretty good at explaining this and other concepts: ruclips.net/video/sxsEEDsgM3c/видео.html Your hotspot 8800L is an excellent Category 18 device. You need to match antenna capabilities to this device, and be aware of what the tower has to offer. So there's 3 main factors (aside from signal strength and S/N ratio) 1. Device capability, 2. Antenna capability, and 3. Tower capability. Any one of these can be a bottle neck.
Seven, go watch this video from Mobile Internet Resource Center. ruclips.net/video/UiWt1yNBY2A/видео.html . These guys know there stuff when it comes to mobile internet. It explains why your not getting boost with your directional. I have a similar setup to yours and have found the directional really only benefits when I am 10+ miles from a tower or I am trying to shoot for a different tower to avoid a congested tower. Also check that you are not using a 50 ohm antenna when you need a 75 (or vice versa, not familiar with your particular setup).
Nice video and enjoyed your test. I am angry that Verizon provides such a strong signal for their hotspots but not their phones. I will have to look into this. The directional antenna will provide a better connection but that does not boost your signal. You need to amplify the signal which weakens as you get further away from the tower. You should test the antenna close to the tower to see what your best results are. The antenna should provide a better connection than your cell phone gets from the same tower. In the city your were possibly only blocks away from a tower while here you are perhaps a mile or more away which explains the weaker signal. And the tower may not be broadcasting the same signal that the city tower does. There are many factors to consider in cellular signals and so many that I fell asleep reading about them. But in our layman’s terms her are a few ideas: Type of signal is important. 4GLE seems to be the fastest for consumers but businesses can get faster. 5G is coming. Strength of signal is important. Cellular signals are naturally stronger close to the tower. Type of receiver. Older computers and cell phones do not have the chips that receive the newer types of WiFi. Mixing old and new receivers on your hotspot. It is rumored that the WiFi routers will default to the slowest connect units. Test result variations: Speedtest will deliver different results using the same computer at the same location. Try running your speed test 5 or more times with one minute between tests. 4 lane highways bog down during rush hour and so do cell towers and WiFi routers as more people log in. Cellular signals can be blocked by mountains, trees, buildings and other RVs. Rain seems to interfere with cellular signals so we might assume fog, smoke etc. will also reduce the signal. There are other factors but I risk making mistakes and so I will stop here.
I should do a followup video. about a week after this video my Verizon speeds dropped to under 1 megabit (1% of what I was getting). this appears to be extreme throttling during peak hours. it was bad enough I could not load gmail. I had to give up on Verizon and go back to Sprint where I'm getting 15megabits. also, I returned the directional antenna I purchased and now have a MIMO antenna that I'm really liking. I'll do a video soon on that system
While the hotspot is able to do channel aggregation to attain higher than 100Mbps, look like your account (or possibly everybody's) is throttled at 100Mbps in order not to avoid overload the network. Booo! It's funny how some people try to get away from society, yet they're still so much attached to their online toys. True solitude means no wired or wireless connections, just lick a stamp for the good 'ol snail mail. LOL
This was hilarious. By far most of it was of things that would not work and couldn't find why. I would suggest give up your so called boon dogging and join society and find a partner to help with the loneliness.

Range. 192.168.0.1 originally was a naval intelligence IP used as a spy IP address
@@SevenWanderstheWorld Thanks for your reply .
@@SevenWanderstheWorld not trying to sound dumb,,,but,,,did you check to see if those towers had been updated to 4g lte or 4g xlte???
@@SevenWanderstheWorld and you MIGHT need to close van doors,,,,,love the video
@@SevenWanderstheWorld would you be willing to try getting 2nd stubby and 2 adaptor plugs to connect directly to back of hotspot and test for mimo without booster???
I am seriously considering this to replace my outdated DSL. I am paying $60 a month for 5x1mb. When they first ran the fiber, it was great. But now, I feel like I am getting cheated. This is the first viable option to become available to us. I would like to know how well this jetpack can handle multiple streams, for extended periods of time.
no idea. I get a huge range of speeds depending on the technology in the towers near me. if your tower has the latest equipment it could be great for you
Thanks for an informative video!
Well isn't that frustrating!!! I hope you find a solution and come back to us with it.
Awesome video well done 👍 love the plate thank you 🙏🇨🇦🇨🇦
thx for the plate! I'll be back out near you monday!
Ok see you when you get here 🇨🇦
Hey Seven, nice video! Thanks
Are you Italian?
I'm not italian... I'm a mix of Irish and Norwegian
Thank you ! Very helpful and detailed. If you would mind continue some random updates at new location, just a quick comment. It is very interesting and helpful to know. Thank you again
I will be doing a followup video soon. I've learned a huge amount about antennas in the last week
When connected to Verizon tower the signal strength was improved but the download speeds went down compared to the faster download speed of the At&t tower that it would connect to but have a poor unreliable signal.
this hotspot has a built in "router" and allows up to 15 devices to join the network
Thankfully I scrolled through the replies...I was ready to run out & buy...please update this or remove so others don't make the mistake of buying the device.
You didn't mention power for the Yagi.. I've seen one like that (no idea if it's the same one) that had an amplifier in it, and required power to work well.
Just curious...why do you have so many knives?
great question. I think I'll be downsizing the collection sometime this year. mostly it is one of the few items retained from when I owned a house and had a knife block collection which I just put up in my kitchen. I think I use 3 knives daily from that collection
What's the name of the stubby antenna?
I believe WeBoost calls it "stubby antenna"
Could be a grap antenna you got from EBay!
What stubby antenna do you use?
👍 Great video!
Band 13 is definitely a Verizon tower but with a pre-paid plan you are prioritized behind post-paid plans in low connectivity areas.
deprioritized is better than throttled/capped at X amount of data.
Deprioritized or throttled are the same words as Verizon just shifts down one tier after x data.
@@danishknight2798 think what you want but tiers/priority is based on class and thottled/capped is based on account total used. check your facts
@@andys623 Our hotspot is throttled at 25G in a month on LTE and unlimited on 3G which is fine as we are in the woods most of the time with low connectivity. After 25G in a month, we are fine on LTE for a decent connection in low population density areas which is our use case scenario.
@@danishknight2798 whatever..you're not listening or don't understand, not going to waste anymore time
Hi Seven, how do I get to that Version website to check my signal strength? Thanks Ray
actually it is not a website. it is an internal router "web page" generated by the router. you type into the browser address the following number: 192.168.1.1/ that will show you the controls of the jetpack
are you supposed to plug the directional antenna into a power source?
there is no power source on the antenna and no mention in the instructions *shrug*
@@SevenWanderstheWorld I set up mine with 2 Yagi in a V arrangement - no power source. I am using a Huawei 4gLTE-wifi router. You might check that you have the male/female issue correct. Hard to see in the video but I did not see a lead in that connector you showed.
Hey Seven... What's the monthly plan for this hotspot ?
printshaq, is this Vz plan “managed on congested towers”? That is just as important as monthly cost.
@@andys623 thats what i did, and thats who's instructions I followed....lol I'm pretty sure the locals didn't know what they were talking about.

I too just got on board with the (VHS) - Verizon Hot Spot 8800L I use it in town but I got it to hit the road...
I have a ton of tabs open/running and my speed test is; 2 down and 7 up
AS FOR THE ANTENNA: I was going to go for the RV Boost kit that also has the Directional [> antenna, maybe not now.
I'll be doing another video in a couple weeks once I find a solution! ps. you can do a keyword search for MIMO 4x4 antennas and how they work to get you started
yo - 7. welllll. you have certainly made an effort. i would have given much earlier. hang in there.

i would be happy with 10-12 Mbps. best I can get is 1-5 Mbps.
How do you get the antenna to be plugged into the Jett pack with coax cable
the jetpack is in a WeBoost cradle and the antenna is connected to the WeBoost
@@SevenWanderstheWorld did you match the impedence?
Tilt at a 45
lol I bought this to try out and never saw anything higher than 10mbps download anywhere in town.
Can this support VOIP telephony?
You could just have a bum unit. Anyway to return it?
funny a guy camping near me also got a new directional antenna which arrived a day after I did my test. he had the same experience comparing his stubby antenna to directional
what??? i have that 8800L and i have 50KBPS thats it i would kill for speeds like that. and we have the unlimited plan
Almost the same setup as me. I have a netgear ac791l though
@Jeff George $70 but with auto pay its $65
Very informative video! It’s always helpful to see equipment tested! Of course I subscribe to Chris & Cherie’s Technomadia for beyond thorough immersion in technology!!

Pretty with only one yagi antenna!
This video is pretty good at explaining this and other concepts: ruclips.net/video/sxsEEDsgM3c/видео.html
Your hotspot 8800L is an excellent Category 18 device. You need to match antenna capabilities to this device, and be aware of what the tower has to offer.
So there's 3 main factors (aside from signal strength and S/N ratio) 1. Device capability, 2. Antenna capability, and 3. Tower capability. Any one of these can be a bottle neck.
Looking to get better LTE Solution.
100 Mbps is not gigabit it's 0.1 gigabit. Still fast though, I have the same service and love it!
oops. you are right!
I just looked at the theoretical specs... max speed is 876 megabits and the highest I've read anyone else seeing was 120. still... it is very fast
I have one 8800L but very slow
Your cables Is way too long, that's why your losing signal
But in our layman’s terms her are a few ideas:
Type of signal is important.

Booo!
